I really like the look of the wide-cropped "cinema style" if you will..... is this usually a 16:1? compared to the 16:9 of the usual size? I noticed in magic lantern you have options to use a crop overlay which would help with composition if you were to later set your sequence settings to 16:1.... or at least I think it's 16:1... does anyone have experience with this? I just want to make sure I have the ratio right....
I just use a .png letter box image for whatever aspect ratio I pick. I can send you some if you want them. I would keep your sequence settings matched to the format you shot in and use the letterbox as an overlay to crop the image. but make sure you decide on your ratio before you shoot because its makes your composition a lot better. reframing in post is not too good. I dont suggest using it for sports though because you just lose part of your image and some resolution. it really only makes sense for a narrative or something more stylized.
It's 2.35:1, meaning the width is 2.35 times as wide as it is tall, the ratio is 2.35 to 1.
But I use that Cinemascope cropmark in ML every time I shoot. It'll work for you if you shoot tripod a lot and take time to compose and frame shots, plus you have to make sure that you're cropping your video, not squishing it. If you're shooting just glidecam, even if you have the cropmarks on while shooting, it won't look right. If you're using a cinemascope ratio, you ought to make a cinematic effort in filming, and just glidecam isn't that.
