Does anyone know why some people naturally spin right versus left?
I naturally spin left, I also curve to the left. Maybe those who spin right, curve to the right? Where that leaves the ladies, I have no idea.
I spin right normally but for some reason I spin left on switch hits...
NinetyFourI naturally spin left, I also curve to the left. Maybe those who spin right, curve to the right? Where that leaves the ladies, I have no idea.
eh i curve right and spin left
I'm pretty sure it's foot dominance. Most people I know who spin left, also slide left foot forward, and when they need to put on the breaks with evenly distributed weight they end up with their right foot forward (when your right foot is forward you have to turn your body to the left). On top of this, I'm right foot dominant (when I lean forward my right foot jumps out to catch me first every time).
The only people who throw a monkey wrench into this theory are those lucky bastards who spin left and slide left foot forward...but all of the people I know who do that started learning right foot forward and decided to change to left foot forward very early on because they wanted to spin frontside their natural way.
Not sure what curve means but i spin left and do almost all my flips over my left but i lincoln over my right
I spin left but i spin right switch. I guess it comes down to when you started like skateboarding
galardogodNot sure what curve means but i spin left and do almost all my flips over my left but i lincoln over my right
I believe it's in reference to his sexual organ.
I spin left, grind left foot forward and am right handed.
NinetyFourI naturally spin left, I also curve to the left. Maybe those who spin right, curve to the right? Where that leaves the ladies, I have no idea.
I curve up, and can only do backflips....this is now a scientific law.
I think it has to do with your dominant hand because when people first learn spins they usually use their dominant arm to throw the spin.
I spin left and slide right foot forward. When I'm off skis I always spin to the right, same on a bike and I'm right handed
I spin right, but slide boxes left foot forward, and when skiing switch I spin left.
AT-ATI spin left, grind left foot forward and am right handed.
Ya same with me I spin to the left and Im left foot forward on rails. I think most people spin left because they spin left onto a rail to get right foot foward.
right spin, right foot forward, skate goofy, look though a viewfinder with my right eye, right handed, if only using one headphone I prefer my left ear
Left spin, Left foot forward
I can spin switch both ways just as easily though because i tought myself to ride switch looking over either shoulder it became the biggest advantage this season.
Spin left slide, right foot forward
Also just thought of this. Do a lot of people only slide one way? Or do you mix it up the same as spins?
^ i can slide right foot forward but i feel so much more squirrelly when i do so, so i mostly stick to left foot forward.
Spin right normal and switch and grind left foot forward
I messed up I meant to vote left spinning, right foot grinding I put left spinning, left foot grinding
I spin left going forwards, but I spin right when I hit jumps switch...
Spin right and right foot forward. I am the 4% ha
how many threads on this....
its the same as left vs right handed.
also if you are spinning left with your let foot forward it means youre turning to the right....................
I did a science project on this in eighth grade, I tied it into hand dominance, eye and foot dominance, and which way you image an elephant walking in from of you. I forget what I found though and it probably wasn't that scientific anyway. The only bonus was getting my teachers to jump up and spin a 180
I know a kid who used to be ambidextrous but he decided to be right handed but spins left and grinds left foot forward and kicks a soccer ball with his right foot so basically this means that this shit is crazy and i have no idea whats going on
I think that this would show some very interesting trends if you compared spin direction with hand dominance...For reasons I can't understand at all it seems like most right handed people spin left, and vice versa. I personally am right handed, naturally spin left, and slide rails right foot forward...also I learned how to spot switch over my right shoulder, so I think my switch unnatural spins are a lot better than my forward unnat. spins. Weird stuff.
NinetyFourI naturally spin left, I also curve to the left. Maybe those who spin right, curve to the right? Where that leaves the ladies, I have no idea.
This is probably the smartest thing ive ever heard
When I saw this thread I clicked on it cuz I was interested in finding out the answer. Instead I just read ~30 posts of people telling everyone else their natural spin direction as if anyone cares beyond the poll...
What the hell is this "curve" that people are talking about.
I spin left going forwards and switch. I learned / am naturally right foot forward, but am comfortable sliding left foot forward on a lot of rails. Always slide left foot forward coming in switch. I started spinning right off knuckles and sidebooters this year, it's strange but I think I can get the hang of it. It's not problem spinning both ways on a trampoline.
okay so yeah we know you spin left right whatever, but can anyone claim that they have absolutely no preference? completely ambidextrous or whatnot when spinning and sliding rails??
spin left grind right, that also seems to be the most picked
I think the reason why it is normal to spin to the left when right handed is because you are throwing with the right side of your body which in this case is dominant. Think about when your spinning to the left and what muscles you are using most. The reason why I like sliding right foot forward is because you are using your dominant foot to scissor and control your self also the 90 on is natural. Possibly the reason why left spin left slide people exist is because they are looking at the rail and have there head turned the natural way. Having your Dominant foot in the back could also provide control with slipping out by having your right foot in the back. But in all honesty I think the side you slide is just preference.
BWalmerI'm pretty sure it's foot dominance. I spin left, and slide left foot forward (always have naturally, it was always way more comfortable), and when I stop quick its with my left foot forward, even though I can do both because of hockey.
SweetumsWhat the hell is this "curve" that people are talking about.
Pretty sure they're talking about the way their dick curves
if you spin to the left how is your left foot supposed to be first on rails that would mean you would have to spin right on rails unless your doing some kind of wizard trick were u have to cross your legs on the rail/box???
.squirrely.eh i curve right and spin left
Dave you don't have a penis, and you've never taken flight
zbphotoI spin right normally but for some reason I spin left on switch hits...
same here
I think it has to do w/ hand and foot dominance.
The hand you throw with is usually opposite of which way you spin.
And you usually put you dominant foot forwards.
.Hugo.I spin left, and slide left foot forward (always have naturally, it was always way more comfortable), and when I stop quick its with my left foot forward, even though I can do both because of hockey.
This, I think it is more than just spin direction: I find that in really sketchy snow I can turn much better to the left, which is incidentally my natural spin direction. when I am doing some really steep terrain this becomes evident as well, because I feel much more confident with one of my turns, does anyone else get this? I have been skiing for many years since the age of three, so my skill level shouldn't be that different between turns.
I think most people spin left, at least where I live. I'm one of the few who spins right.
I think that my reason for grinding left foot forward is that for years I skateboarded regular before I started skiing. I can grind both ways though. Spinning I have no idea why I spin right side.
As far as I know its completely to do with the dominance of one side of your body being stronger than the other. If you look at ski racers they almost always have one turn which is better than the other. From what I know its from growing up and the very simple things you do as a child. Take for example opening a door, you can do this in four main ways; open the door with your right hand and standing on your left leg as you lean to open it, opening with your left hand while standing on your left leg (least common as far as I know), opening with your left hand while standing on your right leg and opening with your right hand and standing on your right leg. Obviously you will not open every door in exactly the same way but if you take time to observe a child opening a series of doors you will start to observe a pattern. This goes for all things which we do pretty much subconsciously like how we cross our legs, which leg we jump off, and many more examples. The only way around this is to train yourself from a very young age to vary how we carry out these tasks, to achieve total ambidexterity.
Finding information on this relative to skiing is very hard but examples can be found in relation to other sports if you look hard enough as I had similar questions last year while thinking about the exact same thing.
You guys are all wrong. The earth rotates counter-clockwise making it easier to spin left, unless you are in the southern hemisphere where it would be the opposite. Spinning against the rotation of the earth creates a gyro effect. If everyone tried to rotate right in the northern hemisphere and left in the southern hemisphere, it could reverse the natural rotation of the earth and cause a rift in the space-time continuum.

you must be looking over the wrong shoulder

Mind=Blown

Yeah I spin left and slide left foot forward, but like you described I was naturally right foot forward but wanted to have frontside my natural slide so I only did left foot forward until it became natural. I'm pretty equal in them now, but if I hit a new rail I always slide left foot forward.
I'm all over the map. got an ambidextrous thing going on. Skiing wise, I spin left and with my left foot forward
I skateboard and surf left foot forward. Swinging a club or bat, throwing a ball - right handed. I write using my left hand
I spin right and grind right foot forward. I think it has something to do with skateboarding, snowboarding, etc. Goofy
I spin left, and slide rails right foot forward, but explain this; slide right foot forward, but skateboard Regular (left foot forward). that's always baffled me
