Learning to ski is... Hard! (help)

So today me and a fellow NS'er (HamsterNiblets) switched our skis and boards.. Jesus I never knew it was so hard to turn/stop on skis.. Like I can pizza and shit lol, but I cant stop by turning both my skis horizontaly, so how the hell do you stop?!

hockey stop? so easy! just lean on your uphill edges and start to turn/slide. don't keep your downhill edges down or you'll catch them and fall on your face.

ok... so you can pizza stop. Just think of it as you are pizzaing with one foot and the other you are just letting go along for the ride.

What you want to do is start turning in pizza, when you get your skis perpendicular to the fall line, straighten one out. keep doing this until you get comfortable. Once you have that down you will want to start working on the pressure of your skis. When you are going into a pizza turn, say you are turning left, try taking the weight off your left turn. Then to go right, take the weight off your right foot.. this will gradually bring your feet parallel. A skate stop is just a really fast turn with a skid similar to kicking your foot out to stop on a snowboard.

See everyone? A high post count alone does not make you a great skier - you must buy lots of Jiberish and Saga as well, and a minimum of three pairs of crowbars and two pairs of frogskins. It also helps to fit Tom Wallisch into your vocabulary at least three times a day.

I guess you could think of it like this. By the way, feel free to ridicule me for typing this out if this is a troll thread. Pretend your skis are like a wheelbase on a car. The pivot point is going to be at or just behind the tips. When you want to stop, think of it as a drift. To slide the back out you hit the gas and make the rear wheels spin. Make the rear wheels spin and slide the tails out. After you got the tails to slide put start leaning uphill with a shoulder width stand and let the edge stop you. Does that make sense?

Just practice on a really small bunny hill. Jeesh I remember when I tried snowboarding when I was like 12 or 13 and you think it'd be easy, but just stopping alone is hard as hell. Good luck!

I here you man, its rough. I used to be dirty on skis. when I tried to ski last year, first time in like 5 or 6 years, I end up pushing out my outside foot to turn.

I look steezy when I'm going straight down the hill, but as soon as I go to turn I push one ski out. I can't push them both together.

Sort of in the middle of the pizza to french fries stage. Might try again tomorrow.

you know how to do the sliding turns right? (turning on the base, as opposed to the edge) just do that sort of thing, but once you are 90 degrees to the slope you dig your edges in a little. its easiest to learn this on groomed runs or slightly icy runs.

how coincidental, i did the same thing to do with a boarder friend. except i could have pulled my feet out of the boots when they were laced up. it wasnt as hard as expected though

But seriously... Turnings great and all, but you don't need much turning abilities in the park... I'd say just stick backflips

To stop just pressure your outside ski like you would when making a sliding turn, and then put alot of weight on it when you want to stop.. It's easier to turn for a while, and then make your final destination stop. So pressure. Weight. And then keep your feet together so your inside ski doesn't get dragged out from under you. And that's pretty much it. The softer the snow the easier it is.

Depending on whether you ride goofy or regular on a snowboard, you might want to use your front foot as the foot that will be in front of the other ski when stopping.
Turn your skis 90 degrees, and while doing this keep looking down the hill, as it should help you with balance.
While turning your skis, make sure you dig both ski edges in the snow and keep even pressure on each foot. Also make sure you keep your knees bent and your hands in front of your knees.

go really slow down a flat part of the mountain and just practice twisting your skis from one side to the other. youll notice that you need to swing your arms a little to the other side to counter balance the motion.

what I think might help is you turn side ways on the hill, and then just slowly switch from going slightly backward to slightly forward. Kind of like a leaf falling, sideways. I think that might help you learn to stop easier. It's a theory in progress

Stand horizontal on a slope and start sliding down. This is the feel you want. But the only difference is that you are pushing down on your edges real hard and leaning a bit up hill. Keep your head down hill and turn your lower body 90degrees and push hard. You'll get it after try or two

i think one of the biggest things you will need to get is the proper rotary motion (basically rotating your feet) (shouldnt be hard you can get 5yo's to get it) and after that you are gonna want to think about making your uphill ski as light as possible to initiate and bring the turn around. gradually adding pressure as youre able.


in the wedge dont think about starting your turn by pressuring your inside (or big toe) edge. think about flattening the other ski. the ski that will be your uphill ski on the turn. in order to do this though you will have to lighten it. once the uphill or inside ski is light you will be surprised where it ends up. it will probably be right next to the other one. although, dont think about picking it up and placing it next to the other one. think about actively steering the ski to match.
