How much better are hot waxes than just rub on? I'm thinking about buying an iron and wondering if it would be worth it.

alot better, besides, you can find irons for dirt cheap at stores, and you can steal them at garage sales too.
yea it definately does more than rub on does. it'll last a lot longer too
Clickity clank, clickity clank, the money goes into my piggy bank
i dug around in my bath room and found an old iron, althogh it has holes it gets the job done. its a bunch better then just rubbing on
Knitting its just so damn hot right now!
Hmm i have been debating buyin one as well, what about prices for the wax used for hot waxes. IS it expensive? Also does n e one have any ideas for makin a ghetto ski stand to wax them and hold the brakes back? The ski racks are too expensive!!
Skiing isn't a matte rof life and death. IT's much more important than that!

to hold the breaks back i put my boots in the ski and have the ski on two old horses for construction. and 2, 6in bars of wax cost me about 10ish bucks
You know you have the coolest cab driver when he says, 'And we're off like a prom dress.'
rub on waxes are good for about 2 runs
'You've got to run like an antelope, out of control'
hold the brakes back with your fingers, as long as ur wearing gloves... And I use an iron with holes but you just have to spread the wax a bit more and it still gets the job done.

Put aluminum foil on the bottom of your iron so it;s smooth
to hold back the brakes i just use a thick elastic, or a little piece of rope. a ski stand isn't necessary, i just put the ski upside down between the arms of a garden chair or something of the sort. the stands are designed more for sharpening.
pklink04, how much does wax does it take each time, two bars?
waxing takes about an 1/8 of a bar puck, there are a dozen or more waxes in a bar/puck. Aluminum foil doesn't work the edges of your ski shred it. Irons are 6 dollars, wax is 5. Good luck
Oakley impulse squared coat size L for sale Charcoal/Smoke color. PM me if you want. Brand NWT.
yea i usually just wrap ruber bands around my binding to hold the brakes back. ive got a workbench that has like a vice thing built in from two pieces of wood. its hard to explain but it works champ.
smartass mother fucker
I use a 60s o rific iron with no holes I got at a thrift store for $2- its the way to go.
it sure is worth it as long as you do it rite cause if you fuck up you can distroy you bases. so if your thinkin of waxin yourself make sure you know what to do or ask a few friends that do it and get help at first. I got my first iron from my grand ma and wax is cheap compared getting it done at your local shop. and the time it lasts depend on how often you wax your skis and where you ski at, like here in the east the snow(concrete) dries out your base faster compared to the west, i wax every other week-end
good luck and yes it is better to hot wax
GET UP FROM YOU COMPUTORS AND CATCH SOME AIR, GRIND A FEW RAILS, RIDE A PIPE OR JUST DO A FEW RUNS WITH YOUR FRIENDS.
I get my wax for free so i have no idea how much it costs, for your breaks rope, wire, etc. anything to hold them down works. And as for ruining your bases, just keep the iron moving or youll cook your base
Imagine 230 pounds of spatula wielding rage flying towards you - PowderCanuck
i just use parafin wax, 2 bucks a pound at albertsons
I don't need no arms around me
I don't need no drugs to calm me
I have seen the writing on the wall
dont use base cleaner cause it dries out your base
club seals not umm...
Hot wax is the shit. Get a waxing profile from Swix. Shaggy is right, you don't actually NEED a profile, but when you go to scrape the wax off your ski, it is SO NICE to have the ski held in place.
We are more than just shadows and dust
Hot wax is the way to go.. if u do it yourself it is 10 times bettter then the freakn machines they use
You should let the wax sit for an extended period of time, the longer the better.

when i scrape my skis, i just put it between my knees and hold them in place, its a little bit of a pain in the ass, but it gets the job done
You know, I went out and bought a real waxing iron from a ski shop. I used to use my mom's old irons for years, but then I couldn't find it. I needed to tune my Pistols so I broke down and bought an iron that's made for waxing, and I wish I just bought a clothing iron because those worked better. But yes, hot waxing your skis shows them how much you love them. It's like a massage, with massage oils....
