What's everybody doing these days?
What kind of education have you received prior to your current position?
Making good money?

I'll start off,I'm a pilot at a regional airline.
Currently 3.5 years worth of professional training(1.5 through high school)
1 year of college and associates degree in Aviation Technology
Pay is not great but I'm done with the shittiest part of my career(building flight time)

Degree: Mechanical Engineering

Career: Field Service engineer for a power generation company. I get to travel around the country and do a wide range of things with big industrial boilers at power plants, paper mills, industrial places (i.e. Anheuser Busch).

I make good money for only being 2 years out of school. Biggest perk is that if I am not traveling I can do whatever I please. Winter is our slow times, so I get plenty of ski time!

Not really a profession but I'm a cashier at a local grocery store. I'm still in high school and definitely won't be making my current job a career haha

The pay is good though, especially for a part time job when most kids my age are making minimum wage or nothing at all.

I'm currently a salesman. I really don't like it, but the pay is good. The sales cycle can be stressful. You feel like your making progress, but management always wants more. I went to school for crop science, and I never use my degree.

$12/hr with the option for overtime

Education wise I got two years and a half years at a university done, in the process of transferring somewhere cheaper and better. Been cooking for close to three years, full time for about two or so. Since I think the question pertains moreso to the education for my job is "none".

Restaurant work is one of those careers/jobs where more often than not culinary school is a waste of money. The pay sucks, the hours "suck" depending on what kind of person you are and they dont tell you that in culinary school.

They'll tell you that you'll make 100k as a sous chef at Alinea or something when instead if you even manage to get a job at a three star caliber place you'll make 10/hr and make fucking salads or something.

I sound salty as fuck but I do love my job.

Shittiest part of the career of a chef/most restaurant people would definitely be the first few years where you're bussing tables or washing dishes, cleaning endless clams etc...but if you're damn good at your job and smart in this industry you'll go real far.

I own a food truck, am launching a second in the spring, and am (hopefully, but sometimes shit goes wrong 3 minutes to midnight) signing a lease this week to open a grocer next year.

Education: drop out accounting and finance major

Making good money? operating at a loss, so.... no? actually losing money. but through the summer I'll making enough with two locations to live a very happy existence next winter. and if my very conservative assumptions for the grocer come even close to reality, I'll be ripping lines in st. barths with the rest of the 1%ers in about five years.

You learn all about food and technique in culinary school. But the thing is, by working in the right restaurants and learning from good Chefs, you learn the technique and speed needed to work the line and really cook and after that the food comes easy.

But yeah, it's pretty much all hard work. It took me about two years of working my ass off in restaurants to finally feel comfortable in the kitchen, and more importantly, know how to survive all the ins and outs of restaurant work.

One thing, if you've been baking or cooking for at least a year and still fucking love your job, then culinary school is probably not a bad idea at some point. It doesn't need to be a big name school, lots of community colleges have good culinary/hospitality programs that can teach you the ins and outs of relevant business law, food costing and menu design and the like.

I've been in it for coming up on 6 years now. 6 years ago I started as a stagehand pushing boxes. 5 years ago I started working for an AV company in the warehouse. 3.5 years ago I started touring.

I build grinderbarz and terrain parks.

No education for position. I do know somebody that used a degree in something related to help them out a bunch but for the most part it's something you're into, and the rest you pick up as you go.

Money? Lol, ski industry'd.


Idk, it's stressful as fuck,sometimes more because of the pressure I put on myself but I can't see myself doing anything else. This is my 11th season right now. Moving around the country and sometimes the world building parks, and shredding new places. I can get down with that.

Eventually I'd like to move more toward something independent. Still do park builds but more on the contract side, and build a bunch of rails for the most part.

Idk, I've had a lot of friends quit over the years that want nothing to do with the ski industry anymore. I don't blame them at all, and always wonder how much longer I'll vibe able to keep my sanity and do this job.

That said I already signed a contract for this summer so there's no stop in site for me. Hopefully I can wade through all the bullshit and keep doing it for years to come. A lot of work but there's something I absolutely love on seeing people get stoked riding features and parks you put so much of yourself into. You can be completely stressed and ready to unravel, and then see a couple smiles, a park session, or overhear some kind words and it's those little things that make it all worthwhile.

Thats awesome dude. Love it. I have a huge passion for food anda lways thought about pursuing a job in the food industry. Went for finance for money potential and stability since I didn't have anything to fall back on. Always regret it a little to this day.

WillgumDid you go big four? About to graduate with a BS in accounting, deciding on what pathway to take next. Even though they recruit heavily at my school, I've decided not to do B4 as everyone I talk to hates their work life balance.


Where do you go?

I have a Corporate Finance and Accounting Degree from a Top 20 UG Business School (per Bloomberg). The big 4 very heavilly recruited at my school. In fact, you were in the minority if you didn't end up working for one of the big 4. I chose to go a different route, working internal finance for my 3rd tech start-up now. Work is a good mix of GL accounting (25%) and FP&A (75%). The biggest upside is I have exposure to all aspects of the business I work in, meaning better future career prospects.

Pay is pretty solid, especially with bonus & stock comp. Let me know if you have any questions.

I worked at a restaurant in my teens as a busser & dishwasher. When we ended up shorthanded in the kitchen, I moved to prep work. I assume the progression works as such.

boredom mostly. got fed up with the bullshit and low pay that is the ski industry and I had eight years of working in small business under my belt, so I figured I'd strike out on my own. I've always moonlighted in hospitality, and took it as a personal challenge. The failure rate in food service is higher than any other industry, so if I can survive here everything else will seem easier.

BS in civil Engineering

I was working at a highway toll company doing all electronic tolling, as a technician/design engineer. I was the one stop shop for design and installing lane hardware mounting/location. I was a contract employee and payed really well, (overtime is awesome). I had a lot of freedom to work how I wanted to. Things went down hill really fast after a change in upper management. It made life miserable, so I removed myself from the position. Now I'm a ski/hike bum for the winter.

Trying to get hired into a full time position doing R&D work in Mechanical Engineering. Currently a graduate research assistant (working on masters) in material science but focusing more on the mechanical characteristics of the materials rather than the actual design of new materials. The work itself is dynamic and radiation testing/analysis of materials so I gain experience in experimental as well as modeling aspects of the R&D world. Would like to steer my career back towards the whole design/fabrication side and build upon my electrical engineering as well as programming.

Location and vacation days are the main perks of my job. There are opportunities to travel for conferences but most of the work is done in specialized labs.

The laboratory that I work for pays pretty well for a grad student intern at 48-50k.

Education is BS in Mechanical Engineering and working on MS in Mechanical Engineering - Solid Mechanics.

I'm the chief financial officer of a real estate development company in NYC. We build residential and mixed use buildings. I actually love it. Yeah sometimes it's a grind but truthfully that's the part I like. It's challenging and every deal has its own quirks and different moving parts.

I went to a state university (actually started at community college) for accounting and worked for a midsize firm for 4 years in the real estate audit group. I then went on to work for one of the clients I worked on who is/was a large developer & owner. I've since gone on to work for 2 other developers as I moved up the food chain to CFO. It took about ten years.

The money I make now is more than I ever anticipated and is pretty good for some schmuck who started at community college. It affords me to go skiing wherever I want that's for sure.

Currently a senior studying petroleum engineering. Still seeking a full time position post-graduation.

Had a few internships. The most enjoyable one was being a Production and Completions Engineer for a subsidiary of ExxonMobil. I was doing engineering work for fracking in the Northwestern Pennsylvania. Nice split of office and field work when the weather was nice, also a very interesting job overall. Pay was around $45/hr.

What I Do: Work closely with software and database developers to make really cool stuff. It's as technical as you can get without actually coding anything...
How's the Pay: As with anything in IT, pretty kick ass. Highly recommend this as a career path.
Degree: Business Comm - Lawl. Completely different field.

The pay is not too shabby for my first year in the industry. 40K base plus commission, expense account and gas paid.

This industry is interesting because the units that I sell are large ticket items. (50K Walk-in Coolers, 60K combi ovens, 40K wood burning pizza ovens) Because of the budgeting associated with large purchases, the sales cycle are in turn longer than most industries.

With that said, I've been managing projects for over a year now and the projects are becoming PO's... which bring in the commission portion of my pay.

It's a very old industry, mostly males, 55+ that look at me like i'm their son or grandson. All they want to do is drink scotch, talk about how they use to be so crazy at trade shows and eat great food. All in all these are things i'm cool with.

I cover four and a half states. (Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and Southern Illinois MAFSI 16)

I sell directly to dealers who sell to the end user. This isn't a factory direct industry, however I call on the end users to drive brand awareness. So I meet with school lunch ladies, nigh club owners, restaurant owners, correctional facilities, food trucks, and college / universities... and everything in between.

Ski and snowboard instructor/park crew/liftie/handyman snow removal. Hopefully going to be a lift mechanic assistant as well as doing some commercial fishing in the summer.

I'm 12.50 a hour when toiling and 14 a hour when on lesson. Commercial fishing is either bank roll or nothing.

High school diploma and a wilderness first responder certification.

I've seen this as a general career progression in my field, while not necessarily this accelerated. Most of my graduating class went into external audit for the Big 4, some to regional firms, some to tax firms, etc. From there, you have to put in your hours as they try to wear you down. My understanding is external audit is not a particularly fun job, especially at the lower levels. Outside of traveling and such, the work is painful. From there, auditors seem to be hired by some of the firms they have worked with and progress fairly quickly to a leadership role. Part of me regrets not taking this path as I want to find myself in a management position. By the same token, my chosen profession has allowed me to gain exposure to all aspects of our business, rather than work in one silo like a staff accountant.

I work for Frontier, the phone and internet company. I'm an Install and repair Tech. Been about 2 months. Though, I did get the job with the help of my brother who is an engineer for the company, anyone who thinks they would like driving around in a van all day installing and troubleshooting internet should look into working for the phone company. It's a union job with great pay and benefits. It can be tough to get in to but worth a shot if you have a good head on your shoulders. Perks of the job: You're basically your own boss, down time during your shift, great pay, overtime occasionally, a chick may answer the door with no clothes on (in my fantasies) and great benefits like personal time and health insurance.

I still have a semester left of college but I'm doing part time work for a startup that makes anti-theft bikes and bike accessories. I mostly do graphic design, ecommerce stuff, and marketing and I like the company and the guys I work with a lot, but I'm currently in a life crisis over whether to jump right into that after school or go live out west for a year and work some shit job and ski. I don't want to give up a job that I will actually enjoy a lot, but I also don't want to miss out on a lifelong dream by saying I'm gonna postpone it and never actually doing it

Mechanical Engineer/designer for a straightening press company. Been doing it full time for 7 months now. Pretty much designing transfer systems and components for straightening presses. I get payed hourly which is odd for engineering but I get overtime that's awesome. It's a small company so I get to see everything I design get made and troubleshoot if there's any problems. Only downside is there isn't much room for advancement within the company.

road construction. I drive a lot of foreman around, put up signs in the off season (now) and clear snow and shit. In the summer I drive a water truck on site mainly, and in the time that I don't have to spray water i'm in the ditch laying pipe or i'm learning how to survey.

I had my highschool diploma, which was the only thing I needed to get the job. And after a couple years i've decided to get a proper drivers licence so I can drive airbrakes, and assisted brakes, my occupational first aid courses up to level 3, and probably something else too just because I miss learning in a school format a lot now.

And yes, the money is good.

I'm not ready to go into my profession yet, but I know what I want to do and that's all that really matters. I'm going to become a certified mountain guide through the AMGA(American Mountain Guide Association), and while I'm developing my skiing and rock climbing skills, I'm going to get degrees in photography and creative writing, with the hope of one day working for an outdoor/climbing magazine writing articles and taking pictures of my adventures.

But for now, I haven't been rock climbing long enough to be able to take the entry level rock guide courses through the AMGA so I'm going to spend the next few years climbing as much as possible and learning as much as I can. I'm moving out west this fall with some friends potentially, so if anyone is in the Loveland Colorado or Kennewick Washington area, I'd love to have someone to climb with!

I hustle collateral for the worlds foremost financial institution, I work more than what is considered healthy, probably drink more than whats healthy, make enough money to afford me doing pretty much whatever i want at this stage of life, and deal with enough stress to have "work dreams" on a regular basis.

But working 12 hour days and wishing there were more hours in the day to get work done is a rather strange phenomena.

Auditing, while not a walk in the park, wasn't too bad. 70 hour weeks during tax season sucked dick BUT I did get to travel a bunch and the summers were quiet. I learned a lot and met some good people including someone I consider a mentor to this day.
That being said the public accounting career path wasn't for me. Junior, senior, supervisor etc.....politics of being a partner. I'm glad I made the jump, for a bunch of reasons, but more so because I enjoy the real estate/development business. If you're going to play this game, better to do something you enjoy.

I'm going to become a certified mountain guide through the AMGA(American Mountain Guide Association), and while I'm developing my skiing and rock climbing skills, I'm going to get degrees in photography and creative writing, with the hope of one day working for an outdoor/climbing magazine writing articles and taking pictures of my adventures.

But for now, I haven't been rock climbing long enough to be able to take the entry level rock guide courses through the AMGA so I'm going to spend the next few years climbing as much as possible and learning as much as I can. I'm moving out west this fall with some friends potentially, so if anyone is in the Loveland Colorado or Kennewick Washington area, I'd love to have someone to climb with!

I'm a video technician, both in the broadcast world, and A/V world.
Went to school for Broadcast Systems Technology, which gave me a degree in broadcast engineering.

So I freelance in the television world. Travel around the province and country (Quebec on Tuesday!!), I set up, and maintain broadcast equipment, mostly sports events.
Tv jobs are usually 4-14 day contracts, and the pay is incredible.

And just got a job as an A/V technician at the Chateau Lake Louise, I set up video, audio, and lighting equipment for presentations and conferences. This job is sweet, cheap rent, free food, and I won't lie; probably the best wage I can get in a ski bum town like Lake Louise.
