The Springs started snowmaking tonight, and Monday and Tuesday nights are looking good too. You guys think they'll be able to open this week?
So stoked.

THEDIRTYBUBBLEAlright I followed 7 springs on Snapchat cause I was desperate for updates, and they have a ton of snow. I think it's possible for them to open this weekend.
veng_mCould you estimate how much? It's hard to tell from the website.
THEDIRTYBUBBLEIdk about the rest of the mountain, but Wagner is perfectly skiable right now.

BWalmerYou make snow when you can (especially when a pending lawsuit is threatening operations)....
Once it's made, if you keep it in piles and let it form a crust (i.e. no one fucks with it/walks all over it) it'l stay insulated and last for a while. Then you keep making on top of that the next time it's cold. Eventually, when you're ready, you push it all out.
Even though it's unlikely they'll open in the next few days, these first nights of snowmaking will give them a head start so that when it is time, they'll already be ahead of the game. The goal is always to open on a weekend, lets say it takes you a solid 60 hours of straight snowmaking to be open, but temps are only right from say 5pm-9am (15 hours). Now you look at the weather for the week and it looks like you can get Wednesday-Friday night...well that's only 45 hours, you're fucked, you can't open Saturday morning. But, if you already started making piles (the start of a pile is always the most time consuming part), say 20-30 hours worth a snowmaking, a few weeks prior, not enough has melted to be a waste because it's been insulated. Now instead of not being able to open, you've got more than the minimum amount of snow, and you're good to go.
Snowmaking, and running a ski resort in general (especially on the east coast), is about gambling, you're hoping that the hours you put in are enough to get the ball rolling at just the right time. Then it's game on, once it's all pushed out you have to keep up to maintain, so you need to make sure that you only open when you know that after you've pushed out the temps will be right to keep making snow on top of what you pushed out. It's always a risk, but the guys who are good at it, know exactly what they're doing.

Springs isnt opening for almost another month. I work at willis and heard through the grapevine that with the pending lawsuit and everything the earliest they're looking at is december 20th.
veng_mWhen did you hear this? The lawsuit was denied.
matt.radCurrent word on the street... tentative plan is to open the weekend of 12/5 and more realistic plan is to open the weekend of 12/12. Of course, all of this is weather permitting.
ttelrabif springs doesn't open, i think big boulder should open this weekend. sadly won't be home for thanksgiving break but it's another option and opening day is always fun at boulder
Daveycrocit1010Any word if they'll have the bunny hill park open Saturday?
