Could you clarify this? If you hit your head on a rock you are in much better shape with a helmet than without one, so I don't see how anyone could possibly say they don't do much. In terms of hitting your head on the snow and getting a concussion that might be true, or it might not, but to say that helmets don't do much is absolutely axiomatically false. Ask Xavier De La Rue, his life was just saved by his helmet. To say that helmets don't do much is insane and untrue. Could you ask her exactly what she means by this? Ask her is she thinks a helmet helps when you hit your head on a rock.

i like to go without a helmet on 45 degree chill spring days. But, if I am learning a new trick or going hard I will have on on.

Park not included I've noticed more people all around wear helmets. This is my first year wearing one and I actually like it. Comfortable and warm. Since it is my first year I realized that way more people have them then do not.

I decided to get one when my buddy hit a tree with his head wearing a helmet and it took a gash outta the helmet. Needless to say that would have been horrible without a helmet

JemsI wear a helmet because of low impact hits. I hit my head many times when I ski and if I didn't have a helmet on I'd probably would have cracked my head open by now.

I'm pretty sure you are right, I was just hoping he could clarify things. I doubt he is interpreting his aunt's comments correctly. She might have meant that in certain situations helmets don't do all that much, but in many situations they certainly do. I saw a guy bash his helmet open on some rocks at Mammoth. He got a concussion, but without the helmet he would probably be dead. Anyone who says helmets don't do anything is wrong. From my experience they are usually misinterpreting what an expert has said and hearing what they want to hear. They usually don't wear helmets and want to justify their decision. For the record there is nothing to justify, if you don't want to wear one don't, just realize that it might really cost you someday. It seems a big risk to take just for a fashion statement. Everyone in my ski lease wears a helmet, I would say the majority of the people that I see in steep terrain at Mammoth are wearing helmets. It seems more and more people are waking up and being safe. Gordy Pfeiffer was one of the best big mountain skiers in the world about 15 years ago. He skied in both TGR and MSP movies and absolutely destroyed Alaska. He does clinics for expert skiers in Snowbird and Alta now. I highly recommend them, he is an incredible skier and a great teacher and he can definitely help just about anyone out there. He also gets coaches like Sage and Jeremy Nobis to help out. Gordy requires a helmet at his camps, and for good reason. I can't stress enough that these camps are pretty incredible for big mountain skiiing, unless you are skiing AK for TGR or MSP Gordy can help you.

Obviously skiing is a little different for many reasons but still the same trend.

3) skating is super sick and super burly but they aren't going nearly as big and fast as skiers/snowboarders. Their not wearing a helmet in their sport isn't even comparable to not wearing one skiing haha

2) I totally disagree, I have the perfect set up for when I don't wear a helmet. But when I wear a helmet I can't wear what I want underneath cause it won't fit or listen to my over the ear Bluetooth headphones unless I wear them outside my shit, which I'm not gonna do.

Let alone skiing is a lot easier in my personal opinion, disagree or agree, whatever but it took me years to get the most basic trick in skating, just ollies. And although I had been skiing since I was a little tike I had never ventured into the park until a few seasons ago. Could just be I'm naturally better at skiing than skating but for myself, I can tell you for certain I progressed about 100x faster on skis.

My point is, every time they hit a huge hand rail or stair set they have to be so much more precise with their movements, obviously their pro's and have been doing it for a while and they aren't just gonna be no where close to getting it out of the blue. But the technicality of landing say a heel flip back smith is way higher than just about any ski rail trick I can think of. Except maybe jf's nosebutter cork on.

Some good points and believe me, I'm not trying to preach to people...I love skiing without a helmet and used to do it a lot!

If you've got the right fit and look with good goggles you look sick

like a normal person should, I do what I want. I do what ever I'm feeling at the time. Some days I will rock my helmet and other days I can't stand it. Its a preference and no ones going to change it.

We do not only deal with soft powder, though I wish we did. There are times when the ice is as hard as concrete. And hitting a tree/rock/anything is always an option.

Fair enough, I've probably only had one day like that though compared to every single time on a board. Obviously it's more frequent on the east but for the most part it's still way less frequent then skating. Trees and rocks are the same for skating plus cars.

Maybe for Park Kids, but when I was a Squaw local I can promise you we were not following snowboarding. For many on this website you are probably right. If you went to TGR that would be very different.
