New Commenting system live for Beta Testing

We're pretty excited about this one.

Enable "Threaded Comments Beta"

Check something that has comments.

Notes:

1) If you like classic mode, select "Sort by Time" and you'll get nesting as well as Chronological comments

2) Only one layer of nesting (replying to another comment) is currently enabled. We can go to a max of 4 layers deep if this is deemed needed

3) GUI is disabled by default, but you can enable it if you want to get all memey on a comment section

4) Low voted comments are hidden by default, but at the bottom of the comment box you can disable this so you can bathe in the hate if that floats your boat

Its a pretty slick update. Somewhere between the old system and what we have in the forums. I'm really excited.

I like it a lot, gonna be sick to upvote and reply to comments. I think for the sake of space you won't want to enable more than one layer of nesting, I doubt there's going to be so much conversation that needs more. I think that the one comment I have about it is that it's really big and blocky and dull right now, it takes up far too much space per comment. I really liked how the old commenting system was super dense and you didn't have to scroll a ton to read all of the comments. If there is any way to condense the layout so everything is more compressed and smaller I think it would look better.

Well, its actually like basically every other commenting system on the internet. Most of them work this way - but yes Reddit does as well.

You can keep it in classic mode for a while if you want, though I think the benefit to the new system will greatly outweigh the old one once you get used to it.

I can see where you're going with this... it was pretty tough to get everything in there so space was an issue. Lets see how it plays out and we can take a look if need be.

The only thing here is that comments are default ordered by score. So if you're having a conversation in a reply, it will be out of order as they nesting is comments on comments - not a threaded discussion.

Sort of depends on where it goes once a lot of people use it, and we end up with a very hotly debated piece of content.

Ah yes, noted. As an added benefit the new system because its a bit bigger is much easier on mobile.

Yeah exactly. Most commenting systems on the modern internet are like this. It both allows some discussion of comments without ruining the whole thread, as well as pushes away the people that are just there to be dickbags.

Once the whole site is using it you'll see a ton more re-ordering happening. This will greatly assist get rid of dickbag comments.

I get what Gavin's saying about size, but I think it's something we'll get used to. Take a look at YoBeat for instance. Their comment blocks are huge in comparison even to these.

Yeah, most are TBH. THere's just more to commenting these days than allows in such a slim space.

Plus, mobile will be way better. Would be insanely crammed if we added the new features to the slim interface on mobile.

You guys should make it show who up votes and down votes content.


I think taking the anonymity out of it will give us more honest ratings.

Less kids trolling and down voting just to be dicks.

Taking away the anonymity of downvotes would cause people to downvote less, causing a skew in rating.

I do like this idea to a point but I think people would rate less if they had to comment, not everyone wants to express their opinion, they watched a video "oh that was dope, upvote" or "i love this skier/producer, upvote" or "that was boring, downvote" or "i dont like this skier/producer, downvote" they dont necessary need to express that opinion in words, ya know?

I would argue that it doesn't skew it, but instead it makes it more realistic. People who wanna downvote something will now have to commit to it, and you'll probably see less people down voting posts just to be shit disturbers.

But I see what you mean to an extent, of course there are those people that would feel uncomfortable expressing their opinion publicly like that. Personally I would consider those people pussies, but I understand that they shouldn't be forced into not expressing their opinion at all.

Now that I've gotten to the end of this response I agree it could kind of skew it lol.

I love it. This summer I found myself being a heavy consumer of bike media, VeloNews, Pinkbike, and GMBN/GCN's YouTube channels. One of my big draws to Pinkbike and the GBMN and GCN YouTube channels are actually the comments. I honestly think it will do well for the community here as these comments are like dedicated forums of their own with hilarious regular posters that really put an awesome spin on things. That sort of happens here but it's not sorted at all, so you have to dig to get the gold... Or at least you had to.

I would like to see it as only a single layer deep though. Reddit gets far too confusing and frustrating to understand, I only browse it if I'm desperately searching for information on a topic. Pinkbike and YouTube are single layers I think and it's perfect IMO. I do like Pinkbike hiding layered comments if they drop below a threshold. You can view them if you join; I haven't joined yet but it's awefully tempting just to see those comments.

VeloNews has nothing at all. Their articles are great and a commenting dynamic would be awesome, but it's not there.

Its currently only one layer deep, we figure the max we could go is four. However, we decided on one for launch to see what the reaction was like... and certainly can keep it that way.

The threshold thing is already in place. Comments which go below will dissapear, and if you're logged in you can choose to unhide.

I like the idea. I like the idea of only up's as well. Either you give the content an up or not at all.

Doesn't work to get accurate signaling. Downvotes hurt you emotionally, but our algorithms do a great job of picking quality out of the hive mind data.

We're not going to force people to comment, and we're certainly not getting rid of downvoting.

Culturally here, just remember -

Upvote if you think its good, not just if you agree.

If you're on the fence about the quality of content/post - leave it.

If you absolutely think the post/content was worthless, downvote.

Just don't downvote because you disagree.

I kind of think I want to launch it live to everyone early next week. Seems to have gone very smoothly, and at worst there is suggestions of tweaks vs. overall hate for the concept.

I have noticed one thing with the new system. My latest article has a comment but its not showing up for me on the news page, it says 0 comments and at the top of the article it says 0 coments even though there isa comment below. Not sure if a bug or just the system taking time to update, the comment was left about 45min ago and its not updated yet.

So I randomly checked out my feedback and noticed those comments are updated too, which is dope.

I have my stuff organized by time and noticed it appeared to be ordered by month - disregarding the year. My feedback is absolutely ridiculous or I'd post a screenshot lol. But it goes from(top to bottom) March 2015 to August 2014, Sept 2014, Oct 2014, Nov 2014, Dec 2014. So that was kind of weird, unless thats the way it's supposed to be. I would have just expected it to go from 2014 at the top to 2015 at the bottom considering the months were in chronological order.

The only thing I hope is that it doesn't make people comment stupid shit just to get upvotes. The way people try and comment something witty at the top of something they think will be popular just to get likes or votes and stuff.

I like it more in the threads than I do in the comments but I'm weird and hate change. I'll get used to it.

I think it will be a huge move for the better. Many major sites - including lots of the news ones - use a similar style.

I still think I'd like to add one or max two more layers of nesting. I found myself wanting to reply to a comment of a comment.

Im personally stoked about this, now we will be able to host discussions in the comments of media instead of having to create separate threads in order to kick up some decent talk. I think this will be something really dope moving forward, its definitely going to push our views on the videos on this website in the direction that I personally would like to see.

Also, now we can get a little more satisfaction out of downvoting the constant hate comments ;) Rad.

YEah I definitely like the idea for the news at least. Getting a good discussion started and sustaining it through the ability to reply to comments.

I think we should still go 1-2 more layers deep of nesting, so we can have a little bit more conversation. I've felt like I wanted to reply to a reply a few times now.

Also - we just pushed this out so that it defaults to the beta interface for everyone. So we should see an uptick in people using it.

That is the major goal for this season. No new big massive features, just a slew of regular updates that we've been needing for a long time.

That video you embedded under Tom's article looked real smooth in the comments. Definitely something other sites don't have, that is definitely useful.

Seems like i just posted this in another thread where someone had a problem with the ns hivemind. The karma/(post score) system discourages honest discussion because it sets up a repercussion for posting anything that ns doesnt totally agree with, aka hivemind. Downvotes arent used to hide bad posts or spam (mods can do this), they are used to put down unpopular opinions that NSers dont like. Its weird because just recently you were promoting people to voice their opinions (like the drop threads) and then you implement a system against them. It also works in the reverse way as people begin to purposely attempt to get high rated posts (& top threaded comments) by only voicing popular opinions (circlejerking) creating a worse hivemind. It also devalues comments without scores. While this feature is being used more lately, this problem is still rampant in sites like reddit/kym/others. The reply feature is nice though.
