You should feel a definite HARD stop. The ligament that holds it in place is tiny and doesn't really have any elasticity. If you keep pushing past the point of the healthy thumb does it feel unstable? (like you could pop it out of socket?) Its possible that swelling could be the cause of the additional travel.
Also, I'm a climber, so for me it was a no brainer that I get it fixed. A lot of people just let it go. It really depends on how critical thumb stability is in your life.
