How much is Saga worth?

Hey NS,

So my friends got in a huge argument about how much Saga Outerwear is worth. (Like if you were to completely buy out saga). One thinks saga is worth $9 million and the others think way more. So we decided to have you guys be the deciding vote. What do you think?

IDK in terms of numbers but it does seem to be getting really big. I always thought of it as some smaller ski company but when I look around the hill a huge percentage of people are wearing saga, like more than any other company.

This depends on factors such as if they own their factory or contract out to factories. It looks like they don't have contracts with an major retail chains besides websites. They also don't have any proprietary materials so I would say they are not worth 9 million

if they peak over 1 mill I would be very surprised... After seeing pictures of their shipments for the new season (the most recent one to be specific) they just don't have the numbers for their products to have a number near 1 mil (but I'm a stupid kid what do I know)

it also says that they were founded in 2011... that website also has no credibility.

If those numbers are true you would also have to look at other assets that the company owns such as land, buildings, and operating assets such as design studios

my point of view no they are not worth 9 million even if the company does have an annual revenue of 2 million

They are a private company so we will never know

Your condescending tone aside, I don't think you realize the sheer size of BDE. If you've ever been to SLC, their offices are almost an entire city block. Their sales absolutely blow Saga's out of the water. I would say that Saga maybe does 5% of the sales that BDE does. Just by product line alone, Saga makes lifestyle & skiing clothes. BDE makes: skiing specific, alpine specific, climbing specific and lifestyle clothes. Then skis. All genres of climbing gear, with the exception of shoes. Also when you think of things like the JetForce Airbag, their R&D department is enormous.

My point is, BDE is amazing and crushes shit, be on the lookout for their first downhill-ski specific outerwear for next season (previously it was mostly touring oriented). Saga is pretty fucking rad too, not anywhere near what BDE is doing.

That said, I would be happy to be wrong. Saga, lets see your tax forms.

It would be interesting to see what their valuation comes in at. Purely speculative because I know nothing about their company outside of the outerwear, but it's likely they source their materials and production meaning they would have no fixed assets outside of any capitalized leases, computer hardware, etc. I'm sure they rent or lease their office space and do not own. Liquid assets would simply be an inventory they hold and cash. I would be appalled if they were to be valued at 9mil. I would venture a guess at the 3-3.5mil range at the most.

I value fixed assets right now for M&A transactions for an investment bank..I do it everyday and consider myself an expert in doing it at this point. Your probably right. Theres no way at this point they produce anything in house its all sourced out wherever they make it. Most of their assets would prob be in computer, leasehold, furniture, machinery, that sort of stuff. You would be surprised at just how little most of that stuff is worth on the secondary markets on an M&A level. Computer/software is worth almost nothing...only thing worthwhile is proprietary software. All other assets would be sold at a value at least 50% off. Inventory on a good day would be at 65% off given a liquidation or forced sale. Then again, you would have to see their projections and come up with a multiple to buy the business at. I bet they have pretty low FCF considering its such an inventory heavy (storage) industry. $9M wouldnt be to far fetched if their books look good enough to produce a higher mulitple

Pretty sure I saw in an SIA industry report from a year or two ago that Saga does about $1.5m in sales annually. I could be wrong but anybody w access to a recent SIA industry report should be able to shine a light on this.

On a side note. After watching Pep's second vice episode he said they sold 10000 of his first pro model, Im assuming out of the $300 that they were sold for K2 seen $100, that's a mil for his first promodel, not too shabby.

Oh, absolutely. I just have no perspective on the size of the company both in terms of asset value & annual revenue. I have worked in FP&A for several small venture backed firms now, so I have some exposure to this as well. It would be really interesting to see what they could be valued at or see some metrics like EBITDA, GM, etc.

Revenue doesn't include expenses... Revenue doesn't mean Profit, what if the expenses are out weighing the revenue and they are pumping 250k a year to keep the company afloat? Plus we don't know how many assets they have. They could be completely outsourced and you are just buying the company name. IE they have all their stuff made somewhere and just rent an office and warehouse rather than own. If they own these things that pumps up company value. In the end a companies value is what someone is willing to pay to buy it out. My guess is that some of these mega companies would be willing to buy saga out for a 2 million dollar revenue stream that could potentially grow quickly, but are they willing to pay 9 million for an investment that wouldn't show return in potentially half of a decade? Or maybe the threat of saga to their business is worth the 9 million? Who knows...
