I know there are more brown pow lovers on this site, yah there is pinkbike but lets be honest, newshcoolers is wayyyy cooler. so lets posts our rides, questions about components, mechanic questions etc in this thread.

I just bought this beauty and i definitely sacrificed uphill capabiltiy in order to get a beefier dh/park bike. id been on a nomad for a while and it's a huge switch in riding styles for me. definitely getting used to the weight and having to keep speed a lot more.

specs for said beauty, 2011 rc2 dh totem, 2012 dhx rc4, highrollers front and back (gona go dhf front and highroller in the back), mtx 33 wheel set, slx brakes, diablous cranks, FSA 760mm Handlebar, Shimano SLX Shifter & Shimano Deore XT Derailleur.

CheddarJackWhat about the rear shock? If it's the x-fusion I'd wait for a better deal to pop up. If it has a better, heavier rear shock I'd say go for it. $1000 would be a killer deal as long as everything functions properly.

But check to see if they didn't swap out all the components for shittier parts first. A lot of places do that so they can sell the nicer parts.

This is also assuming you don't ride super hard either since you've been renting. For a beginner-intermediate bike, it's excellent. Not something you want to be repeatedly sending off 10 foot drop offs.

It comes with all stock parts and comes with a fox van in the rear. I went to a bike shop that carries the status and we came to the conclosion that it would be a good bike for me after i either replase the for or rebuild it with stiffer springs and oil. I would also need a new chain(people who rent dont know how to shift) a chain gaurd, and tires.

I do hit the jump line and am slowly progressing into drops. Getting work done on the fork will help out with this since im all ready bottoming out the front fork with the fork as stiff as it gose

Rebuild the fork, get those needed parts, and you'll be golden. New chain, chain guard and tires should only run you a couple hundred bucks tops - other than the chain, used will be the way to go if possible too. Definitely contact rock shox about the rebuild. I wouldn't be surprised if they send you a stiffer spring for free. Buying a new fork for a used bike is about as pointless as buying a new bike for a used fork. Half the time a full used bike will be about the price of the fork that's on it.

Case and point, I bought my current DH bike used for $1050 (Giant Faith 1). Came with two sets of rims, 3 sets of tires, nearly everything upgraded, and a 2012 boxxer rc with 3 days on it. I pretty much could have just bought the fork the price I paid.

New question: My front brakes are always braking currently, I have removed the pads and cleaned inside the caliper+ cleaned and sanded down the pads a little. Also tried adjusting the caliper with loosening the two bolts and hold the brake in when tightening theme multiple times now. And I tried resetting the pistons/pushing theme all the way back when I had my pads off. Non of this have worked and you can see that there is no gap between the pads and the disc. What else can I try, I have the avid juicy 3.5 brakes?

Starting to see why people hate those brakes!

by "braking" do you mean rubbing? if so my guess is your rotor is warped (maybe) or your master piston needs to be reset (most likely). on acids it is a bitch, you have to take your pads out, press in the master cylinders with a flat head, and bleed. youtube probably has a how to.

Thanks! Yeah I meant rubbing. I don't think its the rotor since its the same the whole way around (if that made any sense). Already had the pads out and tried to press the cylinders in (thats the same as what Iv seen other people call pistons, right?). Will bleeding the system make a difference on the rubbing or is that just something you have to do after resetting the cylinders?
The brakes brake/grip a bit worse than what they did when I got the bike so might need to bleed the system anyways but I don't want to spend the money on a bleeding set right now unless I have to.

yep, cylinder = piston, remember there is one on each side. you will have to bleed your brakes when you reset them.

Fixed it!! Took the pads off again and pressed even harder on the cylinders/pistons this time, couldn't see that they moved back but apparently they did. This time I also tried turning the metal thing that keeps the pads away from each other with the other side up than what I have done the previous times, can this have made a difference to?
When first trying the brakes after resetting the pistons now they didn't work at all but they seem to go almost back to normal after using theme a few times, will have to get a bleeding kit soon to get the most out of theme but at least it looks like I can use the bike until then.

Nice bike man! A Specialized with not many "S" branded parts, if any; I'm extremely impressed.

That's my major gripe with the big name brands (Specialized/Trek, and anyone under their corporate umbrella), they spec too many in-house brands on their completes.

What's the component breakdown? Weight?

The status I'm getting comes with a boxxer rc from the same year. I was thinking of just selling the boxxer for or trading it for a used fox 40. The bigger sanctions will help with my weight and terrain I'm riding on. Its a ton of shale at big sky compared to sunday river where its rooty and muddy. Its like crushing baby head the whole way.

I'm not too sure on price wise but it maybe cheaper to go with a fox 40 instead of getting the fork serviced. I'm also not too sure but I may get a profourm though rock shock.

^ check the cassette if you end up getting that status. If you are going to replace the chain already, check the cassette for wear as well. You don't want to replace a chain only to find out a few rides later that you need a new chain and now cassette due to worn teeth on your existing cassette.

If you are constantly on top of the wear in your chain and check often, a cassette can last a long time. But if you neglect the chain's stretching, it will cost you in the end; a new chain and cassette.

The weight is 27 lb with pedals. Pike 150mm fork, fox float CTD 150mm shock, xx1 cranks and cassette, 32 tooth sram narrow wide chainring, industry 9 enduro wheels, running the Higher roller 2.35 front and back, xt brakes, race face bars cut to around 760mm, specialized saddle not sure which one, and lizard skin grips. Honestly a dream bike for me I spent a little more than I wanted to on it but it was such a killer deal for the build. I've recently gotten into the enduro race scene and I'm doing the whole California Enduro Series and the bike seems quite capable so far!

Well here she is! It's an old frame but there's a good deal of newer stuff on it. Just put that Kashima on it so she sits just a smidge lower than stock but it feels great pedaling around.





It's been forever since I've had a good bike. My last foray into quality machines was a Specialized Enduo FSR Factory Testbike... Stolen. Fuck I was soooo mad. Took me forever to get over the butthurt and cough up the re-entry fee for mtb. Glad to be back though!

fuck I think I just broke my Scott equalizer shock. From the very little research I have done so far it seems like it might need rebuilding but Im hoping its just something really stupid Im missing and that it will be a easy fix..
Heres a photo of my shock for reference:

and here is a photo of it now, hard to get a good photo when the shock is still on the frame. As you can hopefully see the shock is completely bottomed out (?) and stuck in that position. Checked my air pressure a few days ago and only had the shock in half mode so I find it weird that it bottomed out unless something broke, was doing some pedal kicks witch might not have been the best idea on a fs bike...

Damn man, that's rough. Make, model and year, incase it pops up on Pinkbike or something?

On the bike note, has anyone had the chance to ride a Cannondale Scalpel 29er? Or any experience with left forks? I'd hate to defect to them from Trek, but it's looking like a Scalpel 3 might be the perfect step up from the bike I'm on.

How much is this worth? I want to buy it but $2k is a bit over my price range, and an S-Works Enduro which costs 3x as much as the Enduro Evo new was recently sold for $2k. Thinking about offering the guy $1500, anything over that is a bit expensive for me. Thoughts? Is that a fair offer for both of us?

offering $1500 will let him know you are serious. but as far as i can tell that bike looks pretty mint, i wouldn't expect to get it for much less than 2k.

I need some recommendations for a solid XC bike.

Preferably used and affordable, but I don't want some garbage from the 90's, and I don't want something ultra heavy. I just am not willing to shell out 3 grand on a bike when I know I'm only going to mountain bike 20-30 times out of the year (I live where it's flat, and if I venture to Tahoe or Marin, I'm not necessarily going for mountainbiking.

Turns out the guy already sold it. What do you guys think about this and this?

The first one seems to be a great price for such a high end bike, but the guy seems like he doesn't know what he's talking about. Listed as "no suspension" but it has front and rear suspension. Seller also says "Don't know tires condition. Maybe just need air" suggesting there might be something wrong with the tires and he didn't even know enough to try filling them up. It looks like a great buy but something seems off.

The second one seems more reliable, but a lower end bike and more expensive. I might message the guy and ask if he'd take $1500+shipping if it doesn't sell.

Thoughts?

Haha, yeah I know...I'm fucking slacking. I got distracted today instead of getting the bikes setup. Right now I'm in the middle of swapping tires and then will need to put some air in the shocks/dial them in and be good to go.

Since I'm a slacker, here's a shitty teaser picture to hopefully appease you for the time being:




I'll have them both buttoned up by tomorrow and expect to have the pre-first ride photoshoot tomorrow morning when there is better light at my place. Better pictures tomorrow for certain. Then it's time to get them dirty.

In other news; I'll likely be selling my built up Chameleon which I posted a pic of on page 1 of this thread, to start working on a singlespeed. If anyone is interested, just let me know and I can provide specs and more pictures.

first one is a fairly dated design, you don't want it anyways. second one looks really nice. i would jump on it.

Do you have preferences on hard tail or full suspension? And like mentioned above, where does you budget hover around? I've been riding a Trek Cobia since last year:



(Not mine, just a pic of one)

It's an entry level XC bike with low end componentry; Shimano Deore/SRAM X5 drivetrain and shifting, Avid Elixir 1 brakes, low end Bontrager everything else. Depspite being 'low-end' and 'entry level' I'd definitely consider it a solid bike. I've racked up in the neighbourhood of 1000km with it, and aside from usual maintenance and care, the only big thing that needed replacment was the rear wheel. I had busted a spoke somewhere during a long ride, unbeknownst to me, so I kept riding as usual and that just toasted the rim/rest of the spokes.

I ride the balls off this thing, and hang at the front of the pack on my local Thursday night rides, pretty much the only aluminium machine in a sea of carbon and full suspension. Easily one of the cheapest bikes there to, cost close to the $1300 CDN mark new. I don't think I'd have any of the same luck on a bike of a lower spec, but I do think I'd enjoy a bike of a higher spec even more. So I think you could find a lot of new offerings that would be quite solid around that price range from a load of manufacturers, and maybe something higher spec with a few KM on it to.

I'm still considering the Specialized Enduro on ebay, but if I don't get that, what do you guys think about this? Cheaper than the Enduro and also local so I can go see it in person and pick it up, but reviews seem to not be super impressed with it. Still, full carbon, only $1575 and local, hard to pass up. Thoughts?

Adjustable travel is a nice feature. I had a rockshox lyric that had adjustable travel and it was nice to slam the fork low for the long steep climbs. It's not 100% necessary to have but definitely not a draw back.

My budget is going to hover around 1000 - less if possible, obviously. Maybe upwards 1500 if it's an absolutely crazy deal on something that's going to remain high-end for a long time.

I'm pretty set on full suspension. I currently have a hardtail with low-end componentry (granted, we're talking low end componentry from 2007 or something) This is what I've been riding for a long time - though mine has disk brakes. Shitty ones, but disk brakes haha.



I know I could probably throw some money into it with a better fork, brakeset, and components, but I'm pretty set on FS if I'm going to put money into a bike. I don't really see this frame as something worth buildlng around at all. Plus it's like an 18" when I honestly should be on a 20 at minimum

I'd love to build a bike from scratch, and somewhat tailor it to my own interests and such. What would you guys do if you were to go about building a bike, from scratch, using just individual parts and components?
