Comparable laptop to a MBP - Free XL Jiberish.

Starting Grad School. Would like to invest in a laptop. Looking for a durable, reliable, quality laptop. Obvious choice seems to be a MBP. I am comforted by their reputation as being reliable and long lasting There must be some alternatives.

Since I know dick about computers, I will use the base MBP as a spec benchmark. So for around 1000 dollars, I can get a 13 inch laptop with 4 gig memory, 500 gig hard drive, 2.5 gHz processor.

I dont play computer games, dont want a touch screen. Just want a no-frills, excellent laptop that I can use for presentations, word processing, minor video editing (for said presentations) and using social media/music.

Let me know what you dudes think! If you give me a good idea, and I go with it, Ill mail you a Jiberish Windbreaker. So help me to help you

TNORTSPlease tell me more about how windows 8 is shit. My workflow has gotten way faster since making the switch. It also out performs windows 7. There is a difference between not liking an OS because you suck at using it and not liking an OS because it doesn't perform well and hinders workflow.



Maybe im missing something with it. But I just feel like it was made for tablets and touch screens. They removed key features that I liked about Windows. My thought process was if I wanted a OS to work on a tablet i would buy a tablet not a laptop.

That's not what I said. I said if you're going to be primarily using it for things like video editing you will need something better. But even if you're not going to be video editing you'll probably want to go with anything but an apple laptop considering you're paying $1000+ for a computer that has features and specs comparable to a calculator. Have fun rendering a 30 second clip for 3 hours. PC > Mac

What Apple did was not "high end scientific computing" . I know this because I do that type of computing. Almost every scje fist has a MacBook, but we don't run out big stuff on Apple computers. You have to get time on a really good computer for that.

By no means was apple a big name for doing research but some operations definitely used their stuff for super computing.

You know System X at v-tech was the 3rd most powerful supercomputer on the planet in 2003. Then 208th in 2008?

Xseed was also ranked as one of the top 200 most powerful in like 2006.

This is such a nice laptop for this price. I have a MBP, I'd take the Book 4 any day over it.

Agreed that PC are getting better, but they still aren't quite there. The operating system has been improved dramatically, but the physical longevity suffers, and so does the internal longevity relative to MAC


# of users has nothing to do with the actual performance stats of the OS's, it just relates to the success of the respective companies advertising campaigns. The Windows OS on a comparable machine will perform equally if not better than the Mac OS. You are just young and lack perspective.

one of my favorite things about a MBP is the trackpad... sounds silly almost but it's ease of use is just awesome. I hate your typical trackpad on a pc where the scroll is a separate side section or some BS. Two fingers to scroll up/down/around on the MBP is genius.

I sell computers at Best Buy, and just bought a MBP 13" with retina display.
I absolutely love it. Windows 8 sucks. It is an unstable operating system that uses a lot of energy when you don't need it to.
MacBooks are better from head to toe. the pieces are more durable. The aluminum helps to self cool. The screen is the best around. I only have 4 gigs of Ram because I don't need that much but i have also had no problems editing film on it. The best part about Macs is that it comes with a TON of software for free. It comes with Pages, Keynote and Numbers, which is essentially Microsoft office.

At best buy if you wanted Office, which I'm assuming since its for school. It would cost you 119.99 unless you get a deal through your school, but most universities don't offer the newest version at that discounted of a price.

It also comes with iMovie iPhoto and Garageband. For your video photo and sound editing software.

My battery lasts me around 6 hours under decent use. can last up to 8 if I'm not using to much or streaming music etc.



However if you want a PC go with Samsung or Sony
But I would totally suggest a Mac, If you need it for a lot of editing the 15" will probably be better
and then the 13" then the Air's but I would put all of those over PC's with windows 8

check craigslist or ebay aswell.

if your going windows. Dell or HP.

Look for something with a backlit keyboard.
maybe something WITHOUT windows 8 because its garbage

I'm proficient in a windows 8 since I have to use it at my parents house when I visit them. Safe to say, I still hate it. It's completely impractical in the flow of programs and info, mac just does it better.

yeah but it shouldn't be such a bitch to get used to. I had it for a month and couldn't take it anymore so I got 7. the start menu is just so gay. if I wanted a tablet I would have bought one.
