Our Sliding Roof Rack Project - Video

A while ago I created a thread asking who would use something like this and got pretty much the answers I was expecting. Well we finished our rack and this is our final video. You can store anything on this bad boy...and I mean anything. Check it out!

its a locking gas cylinder that controls the sliding and to engage it, the button on the end needs to be pressed. when the button is not pressed, the cylinder will lock in position wherever it is. The cylinder on the side is just a damping cylinder that keeps the rack from slamming into the side of your car or dropping back onto the top.

What's the weight capacity for the rack, and how much does the mechanism weigh? If I could use this to put a 160 pound boat on my car, I totally would.

Nice idea, all about target market. Even the most spoiled of wiggers won't waste mom's money on this. Find some rich older investors and go wild.

Really you are limited only by the rails on your car that this has to mount to. Our prototype was made out of steel because it was cheaper and fit our budget, so the whole thing weighs in at 53 lbs. It can hold up to about 180lbs, but loading it and unloading it on the car rails might not hold that much

depends on what you are loading. skis/snowboards? then yeah maybe. but kayaks or storage pods? huge benefit. it also depends on your car too. obviously you wont need one on a hatchback or sedan. a mid or large SUV though and its a huge difference

I'm sure the customers out there somewhere. I also really enjoyed watching the struggle at the start.

One of the major rack players, either Yakima or Thule, can't remember which one had this a few years ago as a prototype, not sure if it ever hit the market. Theirs actually came out parallel to the roof and dropped down, instead if angling. Either way I would not buy.
