True Detective, the best show on TV?

Been really sick the past few days and thankfully I discovered this show. Watched up to the current episodes in one day, and fuck this show is incredible. Woody Harrelson is great and Matthew McConaughey is genius. The writing and story telling is spot on, and totally fucked up which makes it so great, and only confirms that HBO is the best network on TV. Who else watches this? Predictions for how the last two episodes will play out?

The south is scary scary place.

JD and skitheeast misinterpreted 15 years of the show. They started to realize it when they were posting youtube clips and talking about my personality. Finally admitted to themselves after reading their boy gatos post (and the link JD posted himself) so now they're gone

You are not bringing up valid points, you are misconstruing the entire series and it's like trying to argue with a 2 year old that wants a cookie. People aren't giving up, its just gets to a point where its not worth it to argue with someone that has the intellectual capacity of Errol's half sister

It's also not worth getting into an argument with someone whose first post in this thread was "how did rusty no recognize the scars when he talked to him in one of the earlier episodes?" You couldn't even handle a very minute aspect of the show, you obviously have a hard time drawing even basic conclusions if the show doesn't specifically connect the dots for you like an episode of sesame street

It's just not worth it

they should ban losers like you and the other guy who are lonely and desperate to join any kind group so they chime in without really saying anything after theyve wasted theyre time reading someone elses arguments and realize they cant come up with one of their own. but then there would be virtually nobody left

And once he does I'd love to get back to the discussions we were having earlier, they were awesome. Unlike him, I loved hearing other peoples theories, and even some (ski_the_easts') helped change my own. Fuck just reading the shit on reddit was so much more enjoyable than trying to force my own theory down someones throat.

I still think we have a lot to talk about (even if its just the symbolism and coincidences)and I'd love to see this thread come back for a while so I can deal with the void this show has left me with until next season.

i just finished it tonight, and i definitely think it was a worthy ending. there's not much that i've picked up on though that hasn't already been mentioned so i'm not gonna bother theorising since there's nothing new to be said really. i'm definitely going to go back and have a re-watch, there's almost certainly stuff i hadn't picked up on

also to whoever mentioned The Killing on the first or second page, i assume you were talking about the US version? go watch the original Danish version, its seriously good, on a level with this imo.

another show to check out is The Shadow Line. its a BBC mini-series about police corruption/ drug dealers/ a murder mystery type thriller from a few years ago starring Chiwetel Ejiofor (the dude from 12 Years A Slave) and Christopher Ecclestone (ex-Doctor Who) and it is SERIOUSLY good. its similar to this in that nothing is fully apparent til the very last and each episode is so tense and leaves you wanting more. it's also testament to how well the beginning-middle-end type format works with these types of shows

For sure man. I am super picky when it comes to TV shows because I think they're all garbage these days, but True Detective is up there with The Sopranos and Breaking Bad in my mind. In my opinion, those 3 and maybe Boardwalk Empire have been the only good shows to come across TV in the last 15 years or so.


Homeland was pretty good for the first season and then it kinda lost me...

Meh, the Wire was good too I guess. I wasn't really interested after the first season. Not to say it wasn't a great show though, it was just tough for me to stay into it.

Might be a bit late, but that season finale was fucking amazing. True Detective, Boardwald Empire, and Game of Thrones are the best shows on TV right now IMO

Stop watching Dexter. What season are you on? I'm not even saying this because it in no way compares to True Detective - it's just a terrible fucking show that got dragged on wayyyy too long. Pretty much everything after season 4 w/ the trinity killer is just a waste...

The last season of Dex was just painful

Apparently one of season 2’s main characters will be Sean Penn.

Pizzolatto said in an interview with BuzzFeed's Kate Authur that he's “been reading about the last 40 years of Southern California government.” He also signaled that the show is leaving his home state of Louisiana: He said he hopes the new season “presents new characters in a new place with authenticity and resonance and an authorial voice consistent with this season. Dominant colors will change. South Louisiana was green and burnished gold.”

Wherever the show goes, it will be places you don't usually see on TV: “We're generally concerned with the places that don't get much press and where you wouldn't normally set a television show,” Pizzolatto (pictured with McConaughey) said at TCA.

“I tried to make the format as broad for my tastes as possible in the sense that, yes, this is almost the ‘True Detective’ version of a buddy cop movie hunting for a serial killer,” Pizzolatto said at TCA. “And in that way, it even touches on a lot of those tropes while, I hope, subverting and making them entirely new through the character work. And, you know, there could be a season that's much more of a widespread conspiracy thriller, a season that's a small town murder mystery, a season where nobody is murdered and it's a master criminal versus a rogue detective or something. Even the title, ‘True Detective,’ is meant to be, of course, purposefully somewhat generic before you even get to the there are deeper indications. The word ‘true’ can also mean honorable and authentic and things like that. But all the previous incarnations of anything titled ‘True Detective’ was an anthology; right? So as long as there is some crime in there, I think the series format can approach it. I mean, theoretically you could tell Faulkner's ‘Absalom Absalom!’ as a season of ‘True Detective’ because it's told as a mystery story.”

This show was awesome. Just watched it all and managed to stay away from the thread till now.

Anyone know what the next season is gonna be? New cast? Or same people trying to find the other guys from the video?

I'd assume the next season will be in the following spring when the first season premiered but not certain.

It will be an all new cast, it's an anthology style show where the seasons completely stand alone from each other - there might be a few recurring backround actors that portray different characters but all the big players won't be in the next season. Lots of new info is pointing to the next season being about California's transportation system and will be a 100% clean break from the first season...no ties

Supposedly Christian Bale turned down one of the main roles but Taylor Kitsch and Colin Farrell are on board for Season 2....

Thoughts?
