Help with rails?

I'm fairly new to the park, and I only tried rails at the end of last season. For some reason, I would instinctively use my edges, like a hockey stop, on the rail and thus fall and hit my butt. Does anybody have any tips for me for this upcoming season?

speed is your enemy.. .even the dumpiest stickiest spark skeeting rails can be slayed with proper speed

Have you ever ran and slide on ice? Its the same thing. Make sure your are positioned in the center of your skis and bend your knees. Hope this helps.

skis shoulder width apart, keep your bases flat, lean towards the end of the box, look where you want to go. this is what I was told right before i nailed my first ever box /claim.

I'll tell you a tip that REALLY helped me with this. after you pop onto the rail pretend you are landing on 2 half cut lemons. You want to land on these imaginary lemons and squash them FLAT. If you lean to much on your edges obviously the lemon under your foot would only be half flattened. pop up land flat and just hold it while keeping your eyes at the end of the rail.

Seriously though, someone told me that tip a while ago and it took me from instantly sliding out to sliding boxes with ease.

This. I was totally new to park a couple months ago till i went to camp. Told a coach i wanted to learn rails, expected a bunch of technique advice and shit but all he said was "go faster brah". Those words changed my life forever...

I'm new to park and this seems very reasonable for boxes but I was wondering if this works for rails as well cause everyone always seems to scissor with their front foot?

it works to some degree on any sort of rail feature, but really its just a tip to help you start especially if you find yourself washing out on your back edge. Eventually it will feel natural and you wont need to use any sort of visual que to help

almost every beginner falls backward their first time. hop onto the rail, make sure you do the full 90* turn with your skis so they're perfectly perpendicular to the rail, bend your knees and have them shoulder width apart, and lean what feels like way forward. and look at the end of the rail

always keep your shoulders at the same angle as the rail. other than that. just keep at it. You will fall skiing park, its just part of it. the more you fall, the less it hurts.

I had a similar problem because last year was my first year in the park. Make sure the rail is a flat rail not a rail with an angle to it. You need a 180 degree (flat) rail. The easiest way for me has been said above but I can reword it incase you did not understad it up there.

1) Firm pop - I have the rail in-between my legs when I pop.

2) Don't over think it. Picture yourself finishing the rail. If you overthink it or overstress and think about every little movement you are going to fail. That said don't just wing it. Go thought what you are going to do mentally then do it.

3) Watch the landing/end.

4) Land with style and go bang bang at the camera and feel amazing,].

Dont think about what the consequences could be or what could happen, just feel like you know you're going to make it. Try to land on the rail directly under your ski boots.
and speed speed speed dont be scared to go faster

You should only start learning with rail between your legs, but you really want to go from the side early as possible because you can't go rail between your legs on higher rails and it doesn't look so good.

Approach the rail with it between your legs, meaning hit the rail spread legged instead of from one side. It will help you so much. That is how I learned rails. Also practice on flat bars/ double handrails first. It'll be so much easier than trying to hit a single flatbar first.

I also have a question that may help op too. Is it better to stand straight up on a rail, or bent over a bit with your hands out front? same thing when going of jumps? I see most people when they set for a trick they have there hands out front and bending forward?

You do not want to stand like a solider going off a jump or landing on a rail. You should be in a stance ready to adjust to anything. Whatever feels best. Ski mount can also affect how you approach jumps and rails. With a traditional mount you need to lean more into the jump to land flat on the landing compared to centrally mounted skis. Just try getting more attempts on stuff. You will see what works and what doesnt for you and your skis/skiing style. I hope I kinda answered your question.

Yeah man thanks, After watching footage of me last year I was leaning back too much when going off jumps and rails. This year I will deff try some more "stances" haha
