Realistically, how would you attach dry ice to a ski base? All I can think of is screwing it in with a large washer around the screw head so the ice wouldn't evaporate off the screws. But even then it wouldn't be a tight enough attachment to give you any sort of edging control. What other equipment uses attached dry ice?

It's highly unlikely you could actually take advantage of the dry ice. But perhaps like a tupperware container, upside down. The weight of the skier would keep the dry ice contained.

So if I understand the experiment right, it wasn't really the ice, but the gas that the dry ice emits as it thaws. Maybe you just need to have a way for the gas to come out through small holes in the base of the ski.

They should make a magnetic room and a magnetic board until them. I just want a hover board of some sorts. Somebody go to the future and bring me back one.

You create a hollow monocogue ski and run hoses from the ski to a backpack. The backpack would have dry ice melting and the gas would be forced down the hose and out through tiny pin holes in the base of the skis. It just might work. The low tech solution would be loading up on Seven Eleven frozen beef and bean burritos, and just shoving the hoses up your butt.

on a side note, it looked like they were doing those tests at the great sand dunes in colorado. everyone should check them out at some point they're fucking rad as fuck.

Thing is, the science behind that means that dry ice on the bottom of skis should make it able to slide on whatever surface, not just sand, since it is the gas the dry ice gives off as it sublimates that makes that work. I mean, dry ice on the bottom of skis on snow would even just make you go faster/have less friction. You should be able to cruise down asphalt if you had dry ice skis yeah? Always wanted to cruise down some roads on skis.

spray supercooled gaseous carbon dioxide onto your bases, the impact incites nucleation and it leaves a nice thin layer of dry ice on them, you would probably have to reapply every run or two though

No. If you put dry ice on something (relatively) hot, then it will sublimate faster than if it's something cool, like water ice.

Ive messed around with that shit at school. dry ice will slide for days along a flat countertop if you push it even a little.

So perhaps we dont make dry slopes anymore but instead dry ice slopes. In theory the gas given off by the surface would press against our skis (what you describe but upside down.
