Has anyone ever just picked up and made a huge life change on a whim?

Well its not quite on a whim but it sure feels like it. I have been not too happy about where I am in my life, working a decent job that pays well but its not a like of work I enjoy. I don't like the city I live in and really don't have many friend I feel like I am leaving behind (after 6 years here that's shitty to say).

I have toyed with the idea of leaving and going somewhere new to start over but can't find a job yet anywhere else, nor do I even know where to begin looking cause I could honestly go anywhere. I just know I don't like where I am.

I am just looking for some stories of people who picked up, left everything they knew and went somewhere they didn't know or didn't know well.

this thread is more directed at people who are not in school. so not as many on NS but thought I'd ask. And if you are in school maybe this thread will help you later on in life when yo u are faced with this decision.

Yup. Was completely sick of my life in my hometown, so two years ago I started applying for jobs everywhere. (Mainly national parks)

Found a job in Grand Teton park outside of Jackson Hole and within a month I moved out here. It's been a struggle at times but its also been probaby the best decision I've ever made. Yeah I'll go back to college eventually, but for now this lifestyle is great.

I changed the way i wrote the letter 'd' from being a double loop type thing, to a vertical line with a small loop. changed my grocery lists forever

I've considered dropping out of school for a year or two to move out to tahoe or somewhere awesome with my friends. But everyone wants to stay in school til' graduation... you should ask around to see if any of your friends would be down to rent a house somewhere nice and just have the time of your lives for a year or two

What kind of "circumstances" (for lack of a better word) were you in before you moved? For example, were you living on your own, or have any kind of substantial (not by any large means, but enough to live off of for maybe a month?) savings to allow you to pick up and move? I'm not sure if the answers to those questions are obvious or not, but I have been giving great thought to trying something like that out after this semester ends.

Also, what is your plan for going back to school? What kind of schooling were doing before you decided to up and move? I apologize for the interrogation, but it would be cool to have some kind of an idea of what kind of process I could be looking at.

I am currently in almost exactly the same place right now. I don't like my job, that and my lease agreement feel like the only things preventing me from leaving and once that runs out in June I want to move somewhere else.

I was thinking since I'm still young and don't have any major responsibilities yet, why not get out of the states for a while.
My Uncle recently moved to Sydney and I have a friend leaving for NZ for a year in Feb. so it feels like down under might be a good start. Plus I wouldn't have to learn another language.

On the other hand, I still have never been to Europe and can't think of a better way to experience it then going to live there. I would have to pick a language to learn so I wouldn't feel handicapped by English just to get around.

All I know for sure right now is that I don't want to settle down and I want to travel. There's more to this world then America and I want to see it.

I can see ton's of reasons to leave here and almost none to stay. You only live one time, you might as well get as much exiting/unknown shit packed into it as you can.

i think i'm probably gonna do this just after college....

i'm taking some really advanced classes in terms of science and my teachers have told me that there is a high likelihood of me finding an internship or being a lab assistant or something similar my freshman year of college so i might as well go through with that and see what happens.

I feel like we are in the exact same position except for the lease. In my case I have a job that if I leave before my bonuses go through (in 3 months) I dont get them. I would lose out on about 6-8k depending on my deals I'm working now. And the longer I stay the more bonuses I develop cause I close more deals. Can't just sit on my ass for 3 months and do nothing till my bonuses hit.

i would dude.... you've got LOTS of time to travel. just set a time frame to wait till.


besides, 3 months is a perfect amount of time to plan out where you wanna go, search for new jobs, search for a place to stay, and get transportation figured out. do all of that starting now, and by the time the 3 months is up you can cash in on your bonuses and get the fuck out of there.

After college I packed everything I could in my car and drove from Wisconsin to Denver with no job, no friends and enough money to survive for a couple of months.

It was difficult at first, working shitty jobs, trying to keep up with my bills and everything but I eventually found work that I enjoy and a good group of people to hang out with.

Just don't expect it to be easy but it is totally worth it. I am so glad I am where I am at now.

Here's the thing tho, when they do hit, I will probably have more that are coming in. Everytime I close a deal thats a bonus that comes in 3 months. Eventually I am going to have to leave money on the table. As for transportation, I moved 2 months ago and can fit my shit in a U-HAUL, All of it. So I got that. Just need to do it.

Get that money and dip out my friend. If you would like to come couch surf in Utah and look for a job/place to live here my couch is open till June. Plus I'll be getting rid of all my shit when I move so it's gotta go somewhere/to someone.

When I moved out here 4 years ago I became a pro couch surfer, didn't pay rent for 8 months and went through 6 different houses before getting a job/house to myself. If you ever have the opportunity to live out of suitcases and have no responsibilities at all, I highly recommend it. Set a lot of things straight for me and made me see a whole different aspect of life. People in routines and schedules seem to get more stressed then people without them.

Given, you need to make money somehow and a job is usually the best way to do that. But can't there be work that isn't just the "daily grind." Work that people aren't instantly dreading the minute they wake up, and are instead, exited to see what the new day brings. This is what I am searching for and when I find it, that's where I'll stay for a looong time.

I had a great paying job right out of high school, lots of hours. But I never did like where I grew up. I had been pondering leaving for a while. My dream was to live in Revelstoke. One day this last year I just quit my job, two weeks later I'm living and skiing in Revelstoke. Everyone though I was insane, but money doesn't make you happy. Do what you want. Figure out the money later.

It's my last year at school and i would really like to spend a year doing something i normally don't do... like learn how to surf in australia... just something new.. on the other hand i don't want to be surrounded by people younger than me at uni and my parents want me to go to uni just after school..

I did it. Do it. I left my decent paying job, my rented apartment and all of my friends & family behind to move 250 miles to a city I didn't know, into an apartment I had never seen and took a job I knew nothing about. I had $2000 to my name. I just put all my belongings into the back of a Jeep and just moved. Best decision I've ever made.

I picked up and moved to the east coast on a whim when I was about 22. Decided one night, loaded my truck the next day and bailed. Found a job fairly quick and had a lot of great experiences living out there and partying in NYC, Philly, Bmore. Great times.

still i'd try to secure a job before you move somewhere unless you have money to get by for a while...


if you plan to do that then just wait till you've found a job and just leave money on the table then and go.

Absolutely. I like to consider myself a pretty spontaneous person. Back in 2007, I moved from NZ to London on a whim. I got a call one night from two friends who had just moved there who told they had a spare room, two minutes after the phone call I was packing up my shit, booking flights and gone about 36 hours later. Lived there for about Eighteen months, and was honestly one of the best things I've ever done. Thank God I have a British passport.

i'm definitely moving out of toronto when i graduate high school, right now i'm doing to best i can to get in to ubc. I wouldn't call it life changing because i've been planning this for a loooong time and my parents are not home most of the time already

About 8 months ago, i literally threw a bunch of shit in my van and left St. Louis headed to Colorado. Zero idead wtf i was gona do. I ended up the whole summer in south colorado working for a nonprofit conservation corps. No house or anything just bummin outa the van. It was the best decision i ever made. It wasnt glamorous at times but i made it. I now live in a nice 2 bedroom house and have a study restaraunt job. Im not rich or anything but its a whole hell of a lot better then what i was doing back home. If you want to make a change, go for it pussy.

I do. What I think I'm gonna do is try to find a job out west and if I don't find anything by the time my bonuses come in just do it. That way I can use my bonuses to live off of and look for work.

After college, I had no idea what I wanted to do, nor did I keep on doing what I was doing. So I started commercial sailing and now its my career.
And just last summer, I picked up my shit and moved across the country.
