Fuck filters. The only time you should use one is shooting with a lot of dust/mud/grit flying around. You've got to be really unlucky to actually damage the front of a lens otherwise. Put the $60 towards insurance for your gear (which is probably on your parents' home insurance if you live with them) or extra trips this winter.
i use UV filters on everything, there is no reason not to. If you buy good quality ones, they will not effect the performance of the lens at all. But if you buy cheaper ones (under $80) thats when you might notice some issues
you should use UV filters for film cameras to help prevent a purple cast from the UV light, on a digital camera it doesn't make a difference as long as there is an AA filter, which the only 2 without it that come to mind are the nikon d800e and the leica m8
So the clear and UV filter will both do nothing but protect the lens? Is the clear one better image quality or something? (since there is no UV fringe or w/e on digital cameras)
I'm quite fond of the B+W and Schneider clear filters. They're the same company but the B+W are a little less money. The company that makes you glass is the same company that produces glass for Zeiss and Schneider's lenses
