I don't like the age claim

When I see an edit, I absolutely hate it when they put in the claim on the age.

*Charlie Ingalls you made me think of this, but its not just you

My reasoning is that I think your skiing should stand up, regardless of age. You're either dope or your not, and age points are bullshit.

I kind of think its almost an insult to be like "Yo that kid is fucking sick for 13 years old."

So does he suck then? If he's sick, he's sick - end of story. If he has to be only sick for 13... then there is still maturing to do.

I dunno... maybe off base but I just was really compelled to say something.

*Further disclaimer - Charlie - I thought your edit was sweet. You didn't need to claim on being a certain age. Stand for your skills.

100% agree with this thread.

Nyjah Huston (though I don't like his style) was podiuming in pro contests and dropping parts when he was like 10 without age claiming everywhere. If you're good, you're good full stop.

This is what I'm talking about. You're either good or you're not. The classy thing is to drop an edit - throw the fuck down - and then let others be like "Bro... you think this is sick? Dude is only 11 years old!"

Then you have proven it on your own, and let the hype build naturally. Much more classy.

I think if most kids on here were exposed to skiing at such a young age by their parents like many of these child phenoms, there would be a shit ton more of young talent and age would be much less of a big deal.

I don't give a shit about some spoiled little 12 year old who has been skiing since 2 and probably skis more days in a season than I have in my whole life suck more ass than me and get more recognition for it.

normally age is only shown when it is considered young.

as if being 13 is a dissability or something?
or saying you WOULD be better if you were not 13.

This. Like, you always need a point of reference. Going to Harvard is impressive, but if you paid to get in, it makes it not impressive. If we judged women on their skiing as we do for men, there would be almost no girl in any big movie...

First of all its still impressive to get into Harvard. Secondly Its not like if your a female its any easier to get into a big ski movie, their talent is often equivalent to the males in the same movie.

I had the same thought when I watched Charlie's edit. Don't get me wrong, it was awesome, but the age claim at the beginning kind of takes away from it, and makes me subconciously think I'm watching a child ski, which I am of course, but the skiing should stand alone you know? Hard to explain.

Old age claims are legit though, they inspire me.

Young age claim - shows how spoiled a kid is.

Old age claim - show how hardcore one is, because a. not made of rubber b. if injured, they lose their job, etc.

Kids have 0 responsibilities other than cleaning their room and going to school.

After watching the 2 videos with the like 13 year old boy and girl, I've realized a couple things.
1. I suck at skiing
2. An age claim in that case is appropriate
3. Age claims are OK and I'm fine with them
4. I suck at skiing
5. Those kids are pretty good
6. I suck at skiing

I get where you're coming from, but I am definitely more impressed seeing a 12 year old or 55 year old throw a back flip than I am a 20 year old. It's pretty cool no matter what age you are but there are definitely less people in certain age ranges that make it more interesting...

Bad NSer here, didn't read the thread. But damnit, thank you! If you're sick, then you're sick. End of story.

Put your age on your resume (not your professional resume mind you, just your skiing one...) not in your edit. The only people who need to know how old you are are your potential sponsors. Take pride in your riding and don't try to cop out in your edits.

Thanks for posting this Bishop, this has been killing me lately.

Food for thought: If age shouldn't determine skill, should there be no age categories for comps? Wouldn't that be unfair if you were judging the skill across the board? Just speculating, don't hurt me :(

I'm going to defend the younger side...

Normally on NS if someone posted a video of a couple box slides, maybe the occasional 270 out or 360 off a lip, they'd get hate for it, or just a bunch of people telling them not to post an edit until they get better. Watching an edit is only enjoyable if it isn't the norm. I think it's cool if you post an edit of your first few tricks, but I agree I wouldn't really enjoy it because I know all of us been through those easy tricks and watching them isn't really interesting. If a 5 year old was featured in an edit of some of that stuff- I'd be much more interested because it isn't what I normally see. They'd completely deserve making that claim and getting more likes for it, because it isn't the norm.

It's the same as an old person- their age is not the norm for freeskiing, and the fact that they're doing it makes people look at the video differently than if it was some 16 year old.

I think the only reason we don't like age claims is because they make us jealous. Hell, I almost post hate when I see some 12 year old hucking doubles, but I try to hold back because their is no reason to.

We all love this sport... we should try not to feel so automatically competitive when someone younger than us is better than us. If they are, good for them- get stoked for them- then get stoked for your own skiing! we all love skiing!

I gotta admit, I'm was pretty excited last season when I landed my 360's. I hadnt done one in 30 years ha. I hope to get more consistent, and maybe take it to a bigger jump this season.

If we follow this logic through to the end, then a 7-year-old girl from the midwest who is equally as good as a 21-year-old man from Breck should be equally as impressive. Yet, EVERYONE would agree the young girl's ability is far more impressive.

I f we shouldn't judge skiers with their age or condition or whatever, wouldn't that make Pekka the biggest loser ever? No, because he had a severe accident and yet, reocvered quickly and did things he was told he would never do! The age/sex/condition claim is totally legitimate, because we always judge considering those facts. You can give a million examples (a kid who graduates 3-4 years before his same-age peers or a handicapped skier who does a backflip, rings any bells?).

Yea so I'm Charlie Ingalls. I worked for days and days on end trying to produce this edit along with my brother, Kaya, who runs elevated films. My age has nothing to do with the edit, and I didn't want the basis of it to be that I'm 15. My brother just thought it was worth mentioning in the description. I agree with the fact that the skiing should speak for itself, but with the amount of young freeskiers getting better and better these days I think its relevant. Nothing but respect to Mr. Bishop, but I think that its a pretty insignificant issue. Laughed really hard at the midlife crisis comment hahaha

I'm against the age claim after about 12.

If it's a 7 year old doing 5's... I'm impressed. They've had maybe 3 years of actual skiing. It's awesome. But after 12.... Well, a 12 year old is pretty much hitting that adult development point where they can at least hit a big jump (if puberty has started). They've also had 6+ years of skiing at this point. If you ski park for 6 years and you go for it.. you're going to be pretty solid regardless of your age.


That being said, I hate that it's considered better to be 16 and doing a double in the half pipe than it is to be 28. Most of the female athletes are in their mid to upper 20's. There are going to be some 30 year olds in the Olympics even. But what I find strange is that one of my really good friends is 28 and pretty significantly better than another one of her team mates who is 16 and her teammate has a lot of sponsors and gets a lot of special treatment and she has 0 sponsors, works her ass off all summer, has had basically no coaching in the past few years and still manages to rank a lot higher than the 16 year olds out there. She used to have sponsors, and she's only gotten better, but they've all dropped her in the last few years.

It's just a little weird that these kids are thinking us older folk are getting out of the game. Shit, I'm 27. I'm just now getting into the park. People seem shocked when I tell them my age. Does it really matter?

If you're sick, you're sick. You're abilities don't have an end date unless you really don't take care of yourself/don't take precautionary measures.
