By quality I mean the amount of talented man hours that have gone into making games. Like remember rareware? They put out epically constructed games like donkey long country, blast corps (an n64 fab of mine) and other games that were redonkulus.
The culprit? Inflation.
I don't know who wrote the rule that all games must cost around 50 dollars till the end of eternity but 50 dollars was a fuckload more back when super Mario 3 came out than it is now.
I can't really put my finger on what it was that made the older games feel infinitely playable and timeless but they always seem like forgotten treasures to me. Like an island of misfit toys. I can't tell you how much I shat my pants when my buddy showed up with a working Nes and a bunch of sick games.
I feel like halo 1 was the high water mark, and I doubt as much time or effort has been spent on a game since.

videogames were a much more niche market back then. not everyone had a console so they were really making games for the people who were into it. now everyone and their grandma has a wii so developers will pump out easy ass, non replayable games because it'll get advertised on tv and everyone will buy it. they don't need to do anything spectacular anymore because EVERYONE WILL BUY IT regardless. gameplay is secondary to flashy graphics and whether or not they can make a dozen sequels. it's a business.
Yea I feel like 50 bucks in the late 80s equals well over 100 now, so can you imagine how good developers would be making games if they were getting payed 120 bucks a game? That's my point. Developers were getting payed a lot more per game back in the day. You make a great point tho
I was a real gamer nerd back in the day. I loved the megaman x series, that was hella fun. Loved Tekken 3 and when the PS2 came out tekken tag tournament. On the n64 my friends and I used to love Figters Destiny, and Rush 2024 is also hella fun. And waaayy back, Super Mario RPG for the Super Nintendo. That game was fucking amazing.
IMO videogames peaked in the mid 2000s. The only games I still play from time to time are nhl 05, gta san andreas, and some tony hawk games. underground 2 was the best. amped 2 is also the best sports game of all time.
also I didn't read op.
new video games are pretty much fucking gay though except for skate I guess. and gta V is gonna be the titties
Those developers have several different branches working on the game at the same time making sure they are using correct historical info and such. Games today arent really replayed because they have a real plot that must eventually come to an end.
