How to go from friendship to relationship?

After a long back and forth string of discussions (lasting in all around a year), one of my better female friends and I decided to try and take it to the next level. Both of us are worried that we might screw it up and accidentally ruin the friendship, and we want to take as many steps as possible to NOT do this. What's your advice for making sure we don't do anything stupid and ruin the friendship?

GO SLOW and still act like best friends. talk about everything laugh hang out. it doesnt have to be all gf bf shit. oh and girls that are your bets friend love little extras like notes on their car after school or a visit to their work. just little things mean the most
me and my gf were best friends from 6th to the summer before 11th then we started dating and now have been bf gf for like a year and 4 months now and its the best thing. having a best friend is a gf is actually pretty sweet. lol.

Why would this ruin your friendship? I could see how this would be an issue if you were about to breakup, and you wanted to preserve the friendship after the breakup-- but there isn't any reason that dating should take away the friend part if it lasts. Good luck to you-- my fiance and I were friends a really long, tried dating off and on, and eventually it stuck. We went into the relationship as best friends and it's worked out great.

same thing happened to me. friends for 7 semesters of college and a few weeks before the end of the last semester started hooking up. for us i think it worked great (despite her being in a doctorate program in a different state/city) but we still talk and do the fun stuff. we really cant do anything stupid because we both knew of each others mistake tendencies. i wouldnt worry about it and go with the flow. that makes things a shitload more easier, especially when talking. you can talk about the same shit as before pretty much, but be a little more personal then you wold have beforehand.

youll be fine. you can leave the friendzone, and it is possible for it not to be weird. dont pay attention to the memes... +k for good luck.

Honestly what is with all this friendzone stuff recently, its blowing up in memes/facebook everwhere suddenly. It's making guys everywhere sound really lame

also OP your situation doesnt make sense at all - if you just want to stay friends then don't take it to "the next level". If you want to start going out or whatever, then do take it to the next level, where obviously it won't be the same kind of friendship as before, but she will be your girlfriend.

Other than getting it in, I don't see what would really change. As long as you still have good chemistry once your together and "official," being friends should just come naturally.
