Kendama + Skiing... why?

Kendama looks pretty fun and I've been thinking about getting one, but I'm just curious as to why it's so popular amongst skiers. I always see it in ski edits but never anywhere else. Why are skiers so into it and no one else? How did this start? Seems like such a random activity to be related to skiing.

before mike douglas was a pro skier, he was a pro yo yo exhibition athlete for duncan yoyos.

duncan was starting to market some of it's asian line in the us, and mike was already on the team, so they made him the first sponsored kendama competitor outside of asia.

it was in an early video (one of the first with the original 1080's ) when he started making a splash on the ski world and it just took off from there because of how influential the godfather is to freeskiing

he picked it up when he got hurt, and got good at it, met the right person, that sort of thing. skiing always was his first choice.

if you ever meet him, ask him if he has a yo yo on him. unless he is riding (and even sometimes then), i bet he says yes.

I noticed it in the car scene before amongst skiiers just because it was from Japan so all the jdmbros thought it was madtyte.

pretty sure it was jp auclair in, I want to say UP 1.2 where he rips the kendama. after that came out everyone was sending it with them including me ha

Yeah exactly what I tought, there's a bonus kendama part in Up 1.2.1 too. It might come from Auclair, reigner and whoever was with them in the orage crew.

my japanese great-aunt brought me one when she visited a few years back, then i later learned it was a big thing in the ski community. weird coincidence... totally hipster

After playing with one of these for a couple minutes you pick up a new vocab word, fushigie'd. This comes after playing with this expensive supposedly gravity defying ball a couple times and realizing you just got fucked(or fushigie'd) for purchasing the most useless thing ever. Don't do it. I've been kinda putting the kendama on the back burner for a while, been a bit nippy out which prevents me from having my hands outside my pocket haha.


But I believe LJ is right, I always heard it was JP, and then later Tim D that really made the Kendama what it is today in skiing

kendama is just goes well with extreme sports
