meand a few friends wanna take a trip out west next season to film a video so im start savin now but we dont know what the best resort for back country/park is (we are east coast skiers)

im from the nyc area and we took a trip to mammoth last week... ive never been anywhere else outwest so i cant really say but mammoth was amazing

How many days are you planning? if you're going for a while, I'd say check out as much is you can. But i think: park city and canyons for park, alta for pow?

just move out there, get an epic pass and ski the vail resorts. Breck, keystone for park. and i don't really know much for pow...but im pretty sure abasin is good for pow, correct me if im wrong though.

cause youre a typical east coast park rat, who is going to get killed or kill somebody else if you venture out into the backcountry. trust me, the stuff that is inbounds will be way over your head, no need to head elsewhere to find the gnar.

Quick question: how does one film BC without being in the BC? Some areas you can film from sure, but it sounds like you're naive as fuck.

When you say "backcountry" do you just mean go to snowbird or alta? or hike into the mountains and ski backcountry?

Okay, well thats a bad idea. If you're going to go into the backcountry, id say right now forget about it. You're probably 15, maybe 16, have no idea about avalanche danger or what equipment you need, let alone afford it. Id recommend staying to inbounds, resorts. You can definitely film some sick shit at alta and snowbird, you can really build a jump but it sounds like you should stay away from that. Please, heed our warnings, just going into the backcountry with no knowledge or skill is life or death choice.

i mean my buddies here who made this vid are from the east coast (recently moved to salt lake). theyseem to know what they re doin, infact ur in this vid at the end, they call u out one of the riders on the team went to jib accadmy last year and wont a session at windells and took second at the t wall memorial jam and they ride west. im just sayin cause weare from the east dont mean we dont know west.

Even the most experienced BC skier can go out, make a little mistake, break a leg and die. Ski patrol will not come and save you if you are out of bounds. And if you are from the east coast I am assuming that you have never been on a backcountry trip. you need to know exactly where you are going and if you dont there is a high risk of getting lost. I cant stop you, but if you are going to go out of bounds, bring someone who knows the terrain or tell someone where you are going just in case worse comes to worse.

But other than that, have fun in the mountains

you really dont get it. just because they win park contests doesnt mean they can survive in the backcountry. you can win the xgames and still be easily killed by an avalanche. has your "team" ever taken avalanche/backcountry classes? do they have beacons, shovels, probes?

like someone said above, i dont really care what you do, just dont be near anyone besides yourselves when you set off a slide. it will be a nice lesson for people who think they are so competent.

Being on the east coast has nothing to do with not understanding the nature of backcountry skiing. I know many people who ski in the east that earn the majority of their turns. What does matter is this kids lack of experience, or understanding of what he is trying to get into and associated consequences.
I just watched several of your videos, non of them gave be the slightest impression that either you or the 'team' has any idea how to ski, let alone safely travel in the back country in a winter environment. I also never got the impression that you know your way around a video camera; quite the opposite actually.

I sense alot of hate going on in this thread, but in all honesty i think this kid ( or at least his crew) know at least a little more than we gave them credit for in the beginning. They're not trying to make the next Candid Kamera, they're a group of friends who are heading out west for some fun and to make a vid.
I also realize that this is exactly the situation & group of people that often get in the most trouble, but i doubt that this kid is going to do insane shit that'll endanger himself and others. And if he does, then get a beacon and an avalung, and take a ava course at the mountain.

You can't just "get a beacon, an avalung and take an avy course at the mountain" you forgot the probe and the shovel, and checking conditions online, and testing the snowpack on the right slope at the right pitch. You have no idea what you're talking about, you're from the east to so gtfo.

I am from the East Coast, and so is this op, and you know what we probably dont know what we're talking about. But instead of Getting The Fuck Off we're trying to expand our skiing and move westward. Manifest Destiny? Last time i checked this was a site for fellow skiers to help eachother(or supposed to), not to scorn certain people who happen to live 1600 miles from actual mountains. If we could, all east coasters would move to Co and UT, but since we cant im sure the op would appreciate some actual help on suggesting a mountain to ride on and how to do it

OP, by backcountry do you just mean like off piste pow or like backcountry bacountry, because their is a difference. I think thats why people are raging.

And for park and pow Whistler is a good option, if the snow sucks the park is bangin, if the theres pow to be had good inbounds terrain with sick snow. But the backcountry around whis can be very dangerous with lots of hidden cliffs so be careful with that stuff.

In Whistler/Blackcomb it is pretty easy to find ski or die terrain with out ever crossing the boundary rope.


I also think this is a good idea to remind people the difference between knowledge and wisdom.
