What should my first beer be?

Define "beer" then. For most Europeans, it means beer according to the purity law. And since beer history mainly (not entirely) has to do with Europe, I'd say we have the better argument. It may well be that its flavor gets more diverse if you add whatever you like. But don't call it "better beer", then. For millions of people, adding anything else than hops, malt, water and sometimes yeast is out of the question, as it wouldn't be "beer" any more. Can you name a car without tires "car"? See where I'm getting at? :)

There's traditional beer and there's "modern beer" or "mix beer" - call it what you want. To distinguish between those two types when you want to talk about taste is important, I'd say. Germans stick to the purity law for a damn good reason. They are regarded as the no.1 beer nation worldwide. You might not like it. That's ok.

Forgot to add that I've had my share of American beer, Chinese rice beer and many other types and liked quite a few. So my post isn't about what's better or worse. Sorry if it comes across like this.

This is an incredible beer made by Franziskaner. Hard to find *sometimes*. 
Don't listen to all these people telling you to just drink shit... and though malty, dark beers are good, they probably aren't good as a first beer.

Probably go with a light beer. Maybe a budlight or something. You probably won't want anything to heavy for your first beer.

If you feel in the spirit get a nice IPA

not at all, Trappist brews are really complex. They use open fermentation, which is really creepy when you think about it, and often age for extended periods of time, but the end result is a very intricate beer, with lots of subtle flavors that take multiple tastes to bring out. a true belgian beer is like driving down route 66 instead of taking the freeway.

I do agree that German beers are all wonderful in their own right, and they are vastly different, even if they aren't allowed to add adjuncts. as having brewed now for several years, I can attest to the fact that you can make an almost infinite amount of different styles using no adjuncts at all. You can malt barley to many different levels, there are dozens of major hop varieties, different yeasts, and even the minerality of the water can change the flavor. Few beers use adjuncts in the first place, so I don't see how one would argue that not being able to add them limits beer variety. I'm guessing the person who said that also thinks chocolate stouts have actual chocolate in them.

also, I'd recommend pilsner urquell. It's a little hoppier, but still has a refreshing crispness to it and isn't too strong or overpowering.

Ohhh my friend you know. Spent a summer in Germany and I drank a couple of these with my gramps.

to be fair.. the purity law.. is not in fact  in practice any more....... tech.. you could only use barley  and not wheat....   but weiss beers are wheat....   its more of a moniker than a law.  and it got replealed in the 80's  still good beer to boot though..  and hell my favorate lager.. is beer lao  from laos.

this is my favorite beer at the moment. its pretty local to vancouver, but if they serve where ever you're from, i definitely suggest it.

Blue moon, or some sort of lager but you might not enjoy that as your first

Now i just wish they exported all their REALLY good stuff.

I wish, but alas, they dont :( although I have found Erdinger in Whistler! (another beer I recommend) I was happy, but sad because it was expensive.

Blue Moon would be a decent first beer, if you want something to taste good for your first beer I'd stay away from a dark beer like Guiness and try a local pale ale or pilsner

Canadian Beer

on a similar note, I can't find anything official on it, but I was told by my uncle (who is a history professor so I hope he knows his shit) that the reason behind the drinking age being 21 was because the Regan Republicans threatened to cut off road funding to whichever states didn't raise the drinking age to that.

So it's a state law that doesn't need federal approval, why don't states lower it again? Or is it still in affect that they lose road funding if they do?
