Metered Internet & NS

Lets just say the USA now has metered internet.(hypothetical situation..just for the sake of this thread, pretend it happened, and the cap is something like 20gb)

Lets discuss aspects of this site that would REALLY piss you off. For example, I am watching Durtschi's animated Smith Ad to my left while I type this.

Now, in a metered internet world, I would literally be paying $ out of my OWN pockets to view that ad. Yes, I would be paying to see an AD that I do not want to see, and have no care for.

On top of the regular ads, what about the streaming videos ads in the videos section? That will be coming out of your pocket, each and every time you watch the same commercial on repeat(double pits to chesty style).

DISCUSS! I would love to hear if NS mods would chime in as well.

Really hope this doesnt get deleted.

Interesting question. I would probably look on some tech forums to see if someone has solved this with an app or something to not play flash unless you allow it. There is an app like that for firefox, Im sure someone has figured it out for ipone, etc...

I don't think metering will happen, what might happen is ISP's having the ability to throttle users or websites.

For example a big company like NBC might be able to pay more money so that their site runs faster while a persons blog or smaller sites might run slower. (NBC = Comcast so that is already fucked up and a huge conflict of interest, fuck you for approving that merger government) A tiered internet system.

This would suck, ISP's could control what content people could access and the internet would no longer be free of control of though.

ISP already suck, they get around government guidelines that require rate increase to correspond to infrastructure increases by just postponing the projects. The US is already behind the rest of the world in access and speed and is only going to fall more behind because of corporate greed.

Metered internet would suck no matter what. Like someone else said they'd probably configure the page so that flash player would be disabled and it would just be a flat ad with no video.

gotcha with ya on the ISP.

Could or would they throttle down Newschoolers(video section would probably be unusable for stream) for United State users, considering Newschooler's is not a USA company?

You would be pursued in court. Theft is Theft. And wireless usage is extremely easy to document. If metered internet actually happened, people will pursue you in court FOR SURE. Its a direct bill they will be monthly.

Also, metered internet would surely educate the masses on how to "sue everyone" once they realized how it works. This is America, ya know.

Wireless monitoring programs(dumbed down of course, so even our grandmas can understand) will be everywhere. That is a given.

im just gonna suck on the free markets dick and point out that we dont have a free market for interwebz.

thanks govt! you rock! but but but you say. the govt will save us from the evils of tiered internet pricing by money grubbing corporations. that may be, but to simply save us without somewhat understanding how we got where we are is missing the point.


the only change i can see taking place is if companies like Verizon roll out LTE and that is a viable alternative to hardwired connections.

well i bet internet browsers, based on consumer want, would make an ad blocker so you could use less bytes, or if someone devised a program like this and sold it they would make bank.....


im gonna go buy a book on programming now that i came up with this idea

Canada was not mentioned in my post, for this very reason...to avoid the current "repeal".

programs & skills exist to cover it...your golden ticket would be a really simple "dumbed-down" version that the general public could actually function.
