Skiers dream

So i know this is my dream as of right now but i want to ask some of the older skiers if this was their dream and what happened in reality..

i want to go to college near a mountain (probably EC unfortunately since i cant afford to go out west) and get my criminology degree. But after college i do not want to start my career yet rather live my dream life for a few years

1. Move west preferably near Alta
2. Find a cheap 1 bedroom apartment
2. Get a job hopefully in a ski shop or a job that works shifts so im off during the day sometimes to be able go skiing
3. SKI AND ENJOY THE SIMPLE LIFE
4. After probably a season I'll then apply to precincts and try and find a job being a police officer

This is my life dream right now and it deffinately seems do-able

I consider a dream to be something that probably isn't going to happen, like flying in a space ship. So I guess that would be my dream...

but if your going to become a cop, I've heard criminology degrees wont help you out to much. I've heard from many cops and such who say degrees like sociology or psychology are better

yeah your dream often turns out like this...

1. finish college
2. move out west to some ski town for one season
3. get job at local shop
4. find new friends, new girl, new life... never leave said ski town nor find "real" job.

your new life has now become the dreams of many others... and that's just perfectly fine.

if that's your dream, look into the alta lodge or goldminers daughter. pretty much sums up what you're lookin for.

There's a great article in Powder this month that pretty much covers it...

Many people can make this work.  The question is can you handle it?  There will be great moments and there will be shitty moments.  You'll find new friends and you'll lose many too.  You'll never be rich and you'll often be poor.  You won't ski every day, but you'll ski many days.

I lived the dream for a season, even got the girl, etc...

Now I am at school for something I really love, but i very often think about what that life would have been like if I kept it going.
That being said. The dream doesn't last forever, and its not as glorious as it might seem. go talk to some 50+ year old ski bums. unless they are a very special type of person, they don't have much positive to say.

DEF. go do it though, for a few years. Then, try to lock down what it is you REALLY want to do in your life and go do it before you burn out.

It is easy for a lot of us to say that skiing every day is all we want to do, but as you grow a bit older you'll (most likely) find there are other things you really want to do too.

Sorry to make your dream seem less magical, but thats just how it is. Anyway, go have fun for a bit, it'll be one of the most fun year (or few years) of your life!

how hard was it to transition from the ski life to back to school? i can see it being easy to be a ski bum but coming out of it is what's scaring me.. no excess money to establish yourself and going to school? i feel financially its got to be rough right now

Well as far as college goes, I am lucky enough to have financial support from my parents. So financially, it was an easy transition. I also did land a pretty well paying job so I ended up with about 3 grand saved up after one season, and that was with buying skis, some turntables, and other random shit.

Psychologically coming back is a little more difficult I think. The way I did it was I got accepted into school, then differed my admission for 1 year. That way I was committed to just one season, or I would lose my deposit for school. It was pretty hard going back for a bunch of different reasons. Getting used to being around so many people was weird. In the mountains, you have tourists, but thats about it. All the college aged kids up there are pretty chill. None of the bullshit of trendiness like living on a college campus. I wore sweats and huge t-shirts to class like 4 days a week my freshman year.

Not sure if that totally answered your questions. I'm happy to answer more. I love talking about my time in Breck :)

I was pretty close to living my dream.


Last season, I took the year off after I graduated school.
My season was pretty fucking awesome, skied for Kicking Horse, so I had a free seasons pass. Worked night shifts at A&W as a supervisor. Easiest job ever.
But yes, I lived at home still.. So the dream wasn't complete.
But a season of free skiing, road trips with my best friend and a pretty laid back job (in which I used the money to pay for gas and other,) was pretty close.

My plan right now is to just finish school (another season), Move to Vancouver or something and work in my industry( television technical production, big money). Move back to the mountains in the winter, work contracted gigs.

I don't know how it'll work out..but I sure hope for it
