I know i've been bitching about this alot, i made a thread in the donators forum expecting someone high up to check it out and that has appeared to have failed, so i turn to site discussion, again.


The new generation of NS expects to see the cool edits in the forum. Because of this, not only does it encourage people who make sick edits to post them in the forum but then everyone and their mother think its okay to post their video in the forum.


This is causing the video section to die. video are getting substantially lower views than they used to, compared to even a year or two ago. this is because people don't look at the video section anymore and were on a slippery slope for it to turn into the photo section, which is dead as abe lincoln.

I propose we completely revamp the video section (im sure you guys are on it because you always are) to the standards people want and completely do away with people post edits int he forum, even if they are "sick" or "super pro" because if kids wanna see sick edits they shouldn't be in the mindset of "oh they'll get posted in the forum" they should be looking at the video section, even 2 years ago i feel like the video section got 10 times the traffic it gets now. i remember in high school id check top rated every day, now videos arent even in the video section anymore....

There aren't "too many videos" being posted, every time i post a video its on the front page of videos for a solid day, if not longer. Thats not alot. if you lazy kids actually looked at the video section, youd realize this.


"if this wasn't posted in the forum, i probably wouldn't have seen it" this is a phrase we need to eliminate. Look at the video section! its fucking sick and people post tons of new videos a day! hate or love its all good.

Please NS, use the video section.

thats why you ban them for a bit while your at it. It seems harsh, but it will curb the problem really fast.

We need to do something about this. come on mods/admins you can tell me you're "working" on it but there is no result yet, we need deletion and banning.

i'm with heath on this. i posted an edit that i told people to critique and i got 2 comments other than me and another kid in the edit.

I agree. More comments would be nice. I figure that to make change we need to be the change. Go into the recently added videos and leave feedback. Even if it's just one word.

step 1: make sticky in every major forum with RED TEXT that explains the issue regarding the video section, also it warns that if you post one in the forum it will result in instant ban.

step 2: make eheath mod

step 3: ban people and delete a shitload of threads, no questions or warnings.

it is the only way

*sorry for the asterix but this post needs to be read. some of the videos are like 6 seconds long and if we miss it we have to wait through a 15-45 second to watch it again and if we think the video is good and we want to watch it again we have to wait through ANOTHER FUCKING AD. pretty much the ad is what kills it for me

this is getting pretty rediculous, i really say it would be a safe bet delete threads with videos in them inski gabber. its gona compeltly kill the video section.

then media and arts would be fine for kids posting good edits with stuff they like, or people posting their edits asking for critiques.

here's the thing, i completely agree that the video section doesnt get nearly enough attention but i'm not so convinced that banning people who post videos in the forum is the answer.

for one, it's a ski forum so i can't think of anything more relevant to post than ski videos.. and i cant imagine that the handful of videos posted in the forums are wholely responsible for the slowdown in the video section.

havent thought about it much but it seems to me it has more to do with the huge amount of people on the site compared to when the video section was active..it's hard to sort through thousands of videos

i think it's also worth noting that we had a problem with people not rating and commenting videos (but possibly watching them) way back in 2001ish, even before we had 160,000 members or whatever we have now

my opinion: the best idea is to think of a different way to get more attention back on the video section (personally, after 10 years i'm a bit full of ski edits to be sifting through hundreds of them for good ones like i used to), and ban posting your OWN edit for comments in the forums, but i think banning posting videos at all in the forums is a very stupid reaction to this problem. like i said i dont have much interest in sifting through hundreds of okay edits for one good one like i used to, and i really appreciate when good (PRO OR just really good) edits are posted in the forums. 9 times out of 10 i probably wouldnt have seen it otherwise, especially when theyre linked from another site

my 2 cents. i agree there's a problem but i think you might be getting carried away with your proposed solution

and i agree, i think when i stopped poring over the video section was right around the time when we started having to watch 15 or 30 second commercials to watch a 6 second clip of some douche falling off a flatbar. just sayin.. i know how important ads are to the site but the fact is, it's annoying to watch 8 ads for 8 short homemade videos

I have to agree with this. I really don't like looking through all these mediocre videos and pointless my first 3 vids to find ones that are good that I like. I usually just look at the new top rated or just look for season edits/promos and pow edits from big mountains in the newly uploaded.

I just think there is to much "crap" in the vid section... but you can't tell people, " You suck at skiing don't post videos." I have no idea on how to fix my problem with the video section. I'll just continue to do what I do, works for me.

I agree, I think a lot has led to the video/picture section demise.

Comments in video section and picture section used to be counted for post counts. You know kids love their post counts, why comment if they can't get their +1 ?!

Vids/Pics used to have mandatory categories where you had to click the category you wanted to view jumps /rails /halfpipe /edits /summer... the "edits" section got lots of views while halfpipe or summer got much less. Now that they are all grouped together you don't have the high average quality of videos that you got when all the best videos went in the edits section, and you wouldn't find a 1 trick vid of a kid 270ing off a box in it.

Advertisements can be a little annoying. I know that NS needs to make money from advertisements on videos but sometimes I like to drag the curser back and re-watch parts. If i let the curser get to the end of the video sometimes another ad starts and I can't do anything until it finishes. Usually I'll just say screw it and head back to the forums.

Ideas....? Maybe put a Karma thing next to the uploaders name on the video page (in the description area, where it says skier, filmer, location etc). Keep the one universal Karma for the whole site but weight it heavier in the video section than the forum section, so you are rewarded more for posting a good video than you are for making a funny comment in the non-ski gabber for example.

I also know their is a whole new video section coming to the site so perhaps that will spice it up again.

This is a big influence why I don't spend time in the video section as much anymore. I know the high-ups don't want to hear it because the ads help them get money, but I really think it is a big part to why the video section doesn't get as much traffic. It just isn't an easy and pleasant experience browsing through there with the ad videos.
