40-year old British Jordan McKenzie and his masturbatory art are causing quite a stir in merry old England.

[McKenzie] has made 55 images by ejaculating over canvas and sprinkling carbon over the results to immortalize them.

The results of his labor entitled Spent are to go on display at the Centre for Recent Drawing in Highbury, north London, for a month.

But Father Kit Cunningham, of St Etheldredas Church in Clerkenwell, said: "All we can do is pray for the artist."

Art lover and artist David Gleeson said… "I am in favor of almost any form of expression but I do baulk at ejaculating over a piece of paper. Oh please! Excuse the pun, but it sounds like he’s taking the piss."

McKenzie's hardly the first artist to display his discharge. Our old friend Matthias Hermann has been doing it for years.

He created a piece of work that provoked a response from the public, how is that not art? For as much as people criticize process, it is astounding how often it is used to downplay artist's work--if art is to be criticized, there needs to be at least some consistency. A great portion of the art and literature from the past 100 years has dealt with fragmentation and identity, so I don't really understand how this can get singled out as some pinnacle of underachievement. Would you care to share what you would consider real art?

I'd be curious to hear on what grounds you dismiss this type of work. I'd be kind of a hypocrite to pass judgement on you without hearing your viewpoint, and I actually am fascinated to hear how people come to disagree so violently with work they are uncomfortable with or don't understand.

Not saying it isn't art. I just find the idea itself funny.

If his goal in making the art was to create a reaction of "this is bullshit" then he definitely succeeded. I just stumbled upon this and found the concept of a guy jizzing on some paper and putting it in an art gallery to be quite amusing.

It's also interesting to think that if the artists didn't explicitly state what the medium was, people would view it in an entirely different way. I would venture to guess that perception is a large part of what they are getting at; partly for the shock factor, and partly to see how much a detail like that influences how people view the work. What if he didn't state the medium, or what if it was done with paint rather than semen? It would look the same, it's just one word on a small white card next to the work that has taken this stuff from modestly interesting to the headlines.

Without some bit of controversy, there is stagnancy...

Whether you like it or not, it is these people that are moving art forward. They usually aren't the ones directly on the forefront, but they are the people opening up psychological boundaries and greatly influencing what art is and how it is viewed and interpreted. The vast majority of historically great artists were not embraced while they were alive.

As much as i despised taking a survey of western art course, it sure could help alot of people in this thread understand the concept behind modern art.  Not saying i enjoy modern art, but as an artist i understand the continual movement of the human mind towards a new progression of ideas. 

The urinal always comes up as the most questioned "found object" art, and it's unfortunate that it has become a negative symbol in the art community.  If it weren't for "R. Mutt" the sculptural artwork we see present today would be completely different.  Of course it was inevitable that eventually someone would develop the concept as a means of fighting back against art for arts sake.  It only takes one person to spark a movement, and i hope that this guy jizzing on a canvas isn't that soul.

It's a photograph called "Piss Christ" by Andres Serrano. It's a crucifix submerged in his urine, although if he hadn't disclosed that detail it's actually a beautiful photograph (and still is, regardless).

And at the risk of sounding haughty...
Modern art tends to be relatively theoretical, and most people don't take the time to even try to understand what the artist is trying to get it. So rather than thinking 'Hey, this guy/girl is really well known, I bet there's something they're getting at with this,' they think 'Oh I don't get it, this can't be art.' Most people have a heavily ingrained idea of what "art" is, and anything that doesn't fit within their parameters, consequently, cannot be considered art to them. I realize it sounds incredibly pretentious, but those who haven't actually taken the time to study art history and theory aren't really in a position to reject modern trends on the basis of incomprehension...if you can justify it, however, that is an entirely different story. But "I don't understand" is absolutely, positively an unacceptable criticism of anything if you do not elaborate.

Its a photograph from 1987 by I forgot who. It's part of a set of little statues put in random liquids like blood and milk. This one just so happens to be in the guys urine. Needless to say it caused quite a scene

I just tend to have a bit more respect for talent rather than theory. yeah getting peoples mind working is a great thing and a great way to get your point across, but I'm still never gonna hold it as high as a fantastically carved sculpture or a painting that makes you feel like your staring at a live pig.

To me it's kinda like comparing acoustic music to dubstep. They both have a time and place but I'm still gonna have more respect for a talented person playing an instrument rather than pushing buttons. I know that's very vague and ignorant in some ways but I'm just trying to get a point across about skill.

I could jizz on a paper and throw metal on it to prove a point. I would have a very hard time drawing or painting something like this.

I should do this as an experiment. I'll make pollack like splatters in red and crimson with paint, then cover my face and head with makeup and bandages to falsify cuts and bruises. Finally hold a press conference describing how I beat myself repeatedly with a bat to achieve said artwork. Pain and suffering exploding right onto the canvas, hipsters, sadists, and masochist would be buying that shit up left and right.

Andres Serrano is only famous because he was funded by the National Endowment for the Arts (i.e. taxpayer money). If he hadn't recieved government grants, he would just be another shocking and edgy modern artist.
