The thing that I hate about skiing

Is speed, and the timing of hitting jumps.
Especially on jumps with a really steep landing, your speed has to be almost perfect, the landing may be 25 feet long, but if you just consider only the horizontal aspect of it , you may only have about 5 feet to land on. Overshooting jumps is scary, and knuckling them can end your day pretty easily.

In addition to this, everything seems to be faster on skis. I may only be going 15 mph, but it feels like 35 mph. You know?

This also carries over to rails, I want to go slower so that I can get a feel for the rail and balance, and if I can an edge there will be less chance of a nasty fall.

There's one more point I'd like to make and this is also a question, that's popping off of a jump. Popping always seems to get me into a 'boner air' position, and if the jump isn't very big you may have enough time to be able to bend your knees to brace for a landing. Should I go faster and not pop? Or pop in a different way?

Skiing is like a geometry problem, where the health of your knees and back is at stake.

The only safe thing to do when you have that problem is to hit every jump as fast as possible I hear it's what Simon Dumont and Jon Olson do

it depends on the jump  some jumps if the lip is perfact you dont need to "pop" and some times you have to charge your skis up and boost it.    the boner postion is happing caus your popping to early..  wait just a second longer.. ad you  should be good. but of course dont pop late which could send you back seat. to epic game over..  but jumping takes time to figure out speed and shit.. i can say.. my snowblading years helped me jump better.and land better as well. and if any one is gonna hate on that. mike wilson snowbladed and he as we all know kill it.    

but watch other people and how they hit the jump get a speed idea...   a speed check never hurts.   but then if a jump is just plain shitty... bad lip  bad landing....  avoid it.

Pop at the lip of the jump, then lift your feet so your not a boner? You don't just stay standing, you gotta bring your feet up and grab or something. Pop is absolutely key on jumps, do not just go faster.

i agree.. after seeing other people hit features too will get you a good idea. with bigger jumps if there is someone who has hit it before and knows the speed you can follow them in to get a good idea of what the speed is. hope that helps

For some reason, I am TERRIBLE at judging speed for jumps on the first hit.  I always have to watch someone hit it first and then judge my speed based on them.

This is usually the case when the builder made the jump with the landing significantly steeper than they takeoff of the lip.  In other words, the lip throws you out, making it really tough to hit the steep landing hill especially if the knuckle is pretty severe. 

IMO, any park builder who builds jumps this way should have a rake shoved up his butt sideways.  Pretty strong opinions on this, because I saw three people get injured in less than a minute on a jump like that.

speed in general isn't that bad skiing, It really isn't that hard to hit 30mph on skis compared to something like longboarding.

Obviously he isn't tech9 enough to handle the impact. If i have learned one thing about big air comps, a 7 to the knuckle gets beat by a 5 taken 35 feet past the knuckle. everything looks so much better when its huge and not hucked.

If you cant land 35 feet past the knuckle and still have tranny left, well then i pity your mountain. big jumps need long landings. it makes getting the speed right so much easier.

yea honestly i think you can handle higher speeds on skis than.. almost anything else i can think of. besides motocross bikes or whatever obviously

but i feel ya OP, sometimes it is hard to judge speed but honestly you get so much better at it very quickly, and a well made jump is easy to hit the landing on

Truth.

I used a GPS program on my phone to clock my speed down one of the fastest runs at my hill. I skied it pretty aggressively and routinely hit lower 50's, and I know I've gone faster than that at bigger resorts.

So yeah, 30 on skis isn't that fast.

The speed part (feeling like you're going faster on skis) is a GOOD thing about skiing, not something to hate!

Here's my advice based on your post: If you want to hit jumps, you've got to get used to going fast on skis. Don't go straight to the park, spend some time shredding around the mountain with your friends. Jump every natural hit you can find and push your boundaries a bit with speed. If you can charge down a slope and pop over everything that comes in your way, then you can handle park jumps no problem.

For rails it's a similar story. Hitting rails slowly may not be as scary, but once you get used to the feeling of sliding a rail, you can come at them a lot faster. If you get your confidence up and start hitting rails with a bit more speed, you'll find that sliding them slowly just got a lot easier.

i found this rail advice works the best but for me it was easier to go fast for just learning rails, and boxes, but slower for pretzels (havent quite gotten them down yet)

When whoever is making the jumps decides to make a really bad and small landing where if you don't hit it perfect you're gonna land in the flat or knuckle then it sucks. But I'm sure if you just hit a ton of jumps and do straight airs you'll get it and it will become second nature.
