Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)

Signed up for MMA classes about a week ago. Been good so far. The weird thing is my dad won't let me box, but he'll let me do MMA. Any of you NS'ers do stuff like that? (MMA, Boxing, Jiu Jitsu)

i used to spar, as an endurance training type thing, and my brother keeps me active currently since he's fully into the mma thing. he loves it, has had bouts around the states, etc. tough as nails, that kid. 18 years old and would kick the shit out of me. literally. he's a vicious kickboxer.

but i understand why your dad isn't into boxing. aesthetically speaking, mma looks really violent, because there's blood, torn flesh, etc. but boxing involves sustained, prolonged periods of head blows. mma is short, intense, and is very well conducted in terms of the rules and the way that it's refereed.

good luck with it. if you can stick to it, you'll be in the best shape of your life. few years ago i was beating on my little brother. that isn't the case any more. i look to him for protection when we go to the bars

I've done a little pankration and took a semester of jujitsu for my college gym class but that is all so far. The gym I do the bookkeeping/office management for has an MMA center in it that is about to open so I'm hoping to get into it a little more. I haven't worked on striking at all yet so I am definitely a go straight to the ground kind of fighter. Pankration was the coolest thing ever because it is a little bit of everything all rolled into one.

MMA vs. Boxing, I think the biggest difference is that a large percentage of MMA bouts end with submissions rather than KOs and you aren't getting pounded in the face constantly.

I used to work full time at a Martial Arts studio, we had MMA classes which are tons of fun, the striking isn't as important as the grappling, jui-jitsu, and ground work - remember 90% of ALL fights end up on the ground (that stat includes street fights, so keep that in mind), so working on your ground work is key. Kicks are also an awesome weapon that most people don't think about, get really good at you're muay-thai kicks (leg kicks) and remember to use your entire body (mostly your hips).

I do miss it sometimes, it kept me in shape and flexible for skiing, and was a great workout, but I can't legally train for another 3 years (I signed a non-compete clause when I left).

Cause I worked there, not just trained there, not only that, I was the head instructor so I knew/know very important business secrets that the owner didn't want to get out (marketing strategies, curriculum, stuff like that) so they made me sign a 5 year non-compete clause so that I can't work for another location and so I can't train anywhere else (however, because of that second part, I get a free lifetime membership to this location, which is cool, but I was kinda pissed at the owner when I left, so I probably wont ever go back there). It's all pretty complicated and annoying.

BTW, yes, my username does have to do with martial arts, a flashkick is a backflip with a kick (see video below) made popular by Street Fight's Guile and 101 cause I used to teach them (so like 101 is a college course code). And now, I've had it for so long, even though I don't train anymore (although, I do go out and trick from time to time), I can't really change it cause everyone knows me by this name.
