SO some buddies and i went into tj max and we found some bern baker helmets. there $40 usually on sale for $19.99. Is this a good deal or are these helmets just crappy excuses for a helmet?
They aren't actually classified as helmets, they're hardhats. This is due to the fact that they actually don't meet the safety regulations to be a helmet.
Basically they won't protect you as much as a regular helmet will. $20 is good though.
That whole "hardhat won't do shit like a real helmet in a crash" is a load of shit. Plenty of people use the hardhats (my sister does) and shes never gotten hurt in any bad falls.
the fact is they don't pass the impact standards set by the industry... why would you spend your money on that when the same helmet style is available in EPS, which is tested and fully passes?
The Brock Foam helmet is for sure better than wearing just a hat, but no one can say how much or for how long. It's a total gamble and your sister is just plain lucky.
Just because your sister has been lucky, doesn't mean the hardhat functions just as well as a true helmet. Helmets have regulations with data to back it up, so it isn't a load of shit. More padding, more impact absorbing crumple zones, makes for better protection.
