5'10" 140 lbs....looking to ride SMALL planks

Hey guys, I thought this would be the best place to ask this question....

I am trying to ride the smallest skiis I can without loosing support and comfort.

I have been using 162's last season, and I want to go as small as possible.

I am considering youth skiis, but please, if anyone has a good word of advice, please let me know what your take on this idea may be.   hahaha

I didn't see it in any of the posts but what size ski boot are you using? Because if you are around 27.5, you will most likely be off the mounting area of most skis that short (binding pull outs and delam central). Plus they will kinda feel like planks since they won't be able to flex in turns or flex enough to get the right pop off lips nor be stable on landings of 35-40 jumps.

For the original poster. You want to get at LEAST 160s. Anything shorter will compromise your skiing ability.
1. Your edge hold will be shit
2. On rails it will be much harder to balance
3. Landings off jumps will be much less stable
That should be enough to man up and buy the proper length skis. You don't see any pros rocking tiny ass skis for a reason.

If u can't throw those tricks on decent sized skis, which have way more pop, ur not gonna be able to thorw them on snowblades, but if u really must try, be a man about it and center mount a couple of 110cm snowboards, at least that would be sick

You should probably try some short skis before you go out and buy some.  I have 163's and 181's and the short ones are a lot less stable.  I'd never go shorter than that.  I'm about the same size as you

Ok, honestly I want to put very  heavily modified rollerblade boots on some real short skiis. I mean I guess you could call it snowblading (no pun intended) but snowblades are like way tooo short, pretty airy, shoe like feeling.

Essentially I want a snowblade, but much more stable and versatile, hence why I am considering Icelantic Scout 143cm skiis.  I want the rollerblade boot there for a completely different take on skis...The setup is only going to be used on ledges, rails, small-medium drops, pretty small jumps (max 20 footers) But here's the deal, I'm probably going to try and ride these in the streets more then taking them to the park for sure.

have you ever seen people hit rails on skis? the most fun things to do require some reall tip and tail (nollies on/off, ollie off, nose/tail press, taps). the feel of blading is not going to translate because you use short skis and rollerblade boots. just get real skis, boots, and bindings and you will be much happier.

Damn son, when you said short skis for yourself, I was thinking a 170ish, not a fucking 145-150. Seriously, I am 5'11" and my 171 invaders are really short, but I love them so much, I never wash out or anything. They are my backup/ early/ late season skis.

LOL, yes I have seen people hit rails on skiis... I have hit like 5 or 6 rails on skis (granted I only skied 10 times in my life)  


honestly I don't think I know anything more fun than lacing  royales and farves (rollerblade tricks)  and spinning into rails.  I am not into the whole sliding your long ass skiis around on boxes...I'm into clean precise tricks.  I think having short skiis will boost my spin and  help against clipping them on shit....the rollerblade boots (might have a skii cuff) will help with the flex/getting into the proper position for a royale or farve.


P.S, Dingo Sean, I don't see how there's such a big risk factor with the knees.... I actually damaged my MCL skiing, on some 162 volkl ledges....still not the biggest setup.... Wouldn't it be safer with smaller skis because there is less of a board to pivot and twist around?   And I have never had problems taking falls on my rollerblades, my legs/knees/ankles are always fine (I do agree that skiing goes bigger and falls harder)....but I am not going to put myself in those situations.... The worst that will happen if I fall off a rail is that the ski will unclip and I'll tumble around in rollerblade boots.... (not so dangerous)...I fall off rails all the time on rollerblades...usually onto cement and stuff..

Keep in mind guys, this is not a "ski setup" I am trying to put together... I am aiming for a snowblade-ish type setup, just not quiet snowblading.  You don't see snowbladers ripping it up like skiers....So don't expect that I am trying to "ski"


This thread has probably turned into a huge joke here, but I am still pretty serious.  I have not spent any money yet, and probably won't spend too much anyways.

Like you said you dont know much about skiing you've only gone 10 times ever. Your problem is that you "think" short skis would be better. but take it from people that know something about skiing and have gone 100s of times, you're wrong. Short skis will not be better at that. Also I'm not sure if this has been said before, but what size boot do you wear? Say you have something like a 28 and you mount that on a 140cm ski. your bindings may not fit where they should be mounted because your feet are literally too big for the ski. this means you could probably pretty easily rip a binding out of your ski.

most people seem to be missing the point,

your asking if there are any technical issues to why not use smaller skis in the hope it will allow you to be more technical, sure you might be able to spin a little bit faster but you are going to lose a lot in stability

that is why everyone prefers longer skis, you can a lot more in being stable on landings AND being stable on rails, your weight is more evenly distributed, this will but more force on the ski making it more likely to break as well,

also youth skis are "made using the same construction" bullshit, some maybe but they generally have cheaper lighter materials, cores, bases etc because there not expecting some fully grown fatty on them

and btw kiddo your not really going to be innovative, asien allen is about 400 steps ahead of you and is actually doing the shit you aspire to it, not to hate or anything, and like he said hes using 177s

but each to his own for sure go ahead  at the end of the day if your having fun who gives a fuck, but you asked for some advice so dont be suprised if a lot of what people said you will run into, as although ns can be retarded the fact is most of these people have skied a lot more than you,

Thank you, one of the few in here with some decent criticism.

I am still riding on my Volkl Ledges with my Atomic m100 bindings.

I also bought some awesome rear entry salomon boots from like 1992... those will be fun....(for ya'll to rip on me some more)

And on the asian allen note, I saw his pictures, I was already doing half those grinds  (however allen is on another level and I won't be there for a while...TABARNAKE)

This pretty much. I mean I'm not hating on you at all but seriously, small skis are going to give you waay less stability on rails than your blades ever did. I mean there's a reason even Henrik didn't 270 onto any rails with blades. Its just about 100 times harder with blades than it is with skis. Sure the rotation might be easier but the actual landing part is much harder.

And thanks a lot to everyone who contributed something constructive to this thread, I appreciate and actually do agree with the  main majority of you guys...  However my path is long from finished.   I just need some extra gear, winter and a lot of trial and error asap!!  I am just as stoked as everyone else for the next season!!

For now my plan is to stick with my 162 Volkl Ledges and ride them with some Salomon HTC 520 (thc 420?) boots! hahaha  (I also have atomic m100's but they're too big -__-)


So, some of you can rest easy tonight knowing that NO, I will not be zipping around on 143s....and I DO appreciate all the response/feedback, seriously, thanks!!

if you wanna do what those edits showed, buy some ski boards. they are actually meant to be ridden like those videos demonstrate.

who-dat is right.

if you get kids skis, you will rip out that mount in a heartbeat. go have fun, do whatever, just don't expect performance out of the skis.

Yeah tbh I did some video logging....I got some options....yeah, those revel8 snowblades like everyone linked (I was even thinking about this before I started skiing haha, but tbh skiing is where it's at....)

Now those things offer NO support/stability at alll. I would definately love to test some of those out with my rollerblades on them, doing grinds and stuff on all the jibs LOL, but imagine drilling those lil clips that you put the frames over, onto  some snowbaldes...I think that pretty much answered my whole problem/scenario, wtc....w.e ahahaha.

Let me know what you guys think of this....constructively(hahah). TBH, this seems like the best idea so far. hahaha.

It is now even more obvious that you don't have a clue what you're talking about. Earlier you said you'd be hitting 40 footers, now it's 20.

Do you even ski? You want to make a now releasable ski now that isn't even a snowblade. Like onenerdy kid said, you're gonna be mounting in "pullout/delam central." I doubt any respectable shop will even mount your kid's skis.
