Just a thought to leave NS on a friday night.

Let us suppose there were a hole straight through the earth. (IE here central america to wherever it would be on the other side) Then let us suppose there isnt any soft of molten lava center, and all that jazz.

Now what would happen if you fell through that hole, presumably to the other side. At what point would you begin to "fall" up? (obviously the center of the earth, i think?) but what would happen? Also would you be able to tell?? would you fall feet first and then fall up feet first? would you get a head rush? what???

no what i'm implying is that you can't practically dig a hole with a straight through any section of the earth due to geotechnical reasons (the hole would collapse into itself). if it's going through the whole earth then it's going to go through pretty much any kind of material you could imagine, and many of these are unfavourable to create this hypothetical hole through the earth.

zero friction and air resistance you would come up at the exact speed you went in at and you would hope to god you could grab on because if you missed you'd go back down through the hole and continue to go back and forth until you died of starvation or got killed by the creature that lives in the center of the earth

i dont think reality was ever at the center of this issue

we're talking about a hypothetical earth made of playdough...although then the physics of the tube travel would be different

i'd gladly dedicate 42 minutes of my life to traveling through the earth in a clear tube...that'd be fucking awesome

someone did a freefall from the outskirts of the atmosphere and landed with a parachute
and since your body all ready has the momentum from the earth spinning i don't think that'd play too big a part in it
and there'd be air
you'd still be in earth's atmosphere

fuck. i almost called you out on this but you were right, i thought the longest confirmed kill was in vietnam. a canadian did overtake that record in 2002 and it stood until 2009. when a british soldier beat the Canadian by about 70m

And holy shit OP I've thought about this same thing for years. I've always wondered if you'd float in the middle or what.

And since terminal velocity of the human body is about 120MPH, wouldn't that mean you'd slow down a whole lot quicker to a complete stop once you pass the center?

And would gravity just fucking crush you or would there be no gravity at all?

Would the tunnel, once constructed, be able to support the load of all the earth or would it collapse?

SO MANY QUESTIONS.

Gravity is stronger near the center of the earth than it is near the surface, therefore you'd probably just stay in the center of the earth and be the laughingstock of the entire world.

i'm not competely sure of this....

but i believe that, theoretically, the resulting gravity in the center of the earth is zero, meaning, you're weightless.....


i think that you could best compare your travel with a vertical harmonic oscillating object attached to a spring.

in other words; attach weight to vertical spring, pull object down and release.

the object will start oscillating with decreasing amplitude.

until it stops in the equilibrum point (or however you call it in english)


unless all friction is to be neglected; you'll start oscillating with a constant amplitude

(a special example of such oscillations is the movement of the planets and moon....)

Imagine a bouncy ball bouncing on a mirror. Look at the ball when it makes contact with the mirror and look at its reflection, when it makes contact look at the actual ball. That is what would happen. With every bounce it becomes lesser and lesser. The ball would never stop moving though it will always have move, just so lightly you can never notice it with even the best technology 100 years from now.

To the guy who mentioned newtons laws STFU. We don't fucking use newtonian physics anymore, we implement a lot of newton's ideas into relativity and quantum mechanics but we don't use newtons laws. There are very few scientist who believe ether is real. Most scientist discredit ether therefore they discredit newtonian physics, but not the concepts of newton's ideas

you would go into simple harmonic motion and eventually slow down and stop at the center of the earth due to air friction but it would take a hella long time. you would be oscillating about the center of the earth

we actually asked my physics teacher this a few months ago in class. u would fall to the center where there would be no gravity..then continue to fall toward the other side. then gravity would start to take place and u would go back the other way u came..then after passing the center ud fall again to the other side of the earth..basically trapping u for the rest of ur life hahah

I agree with whoever said you would oscillate back and forth through the hole. Once you pass the center of mass of the earth you'd begin to decelerate, then fall back to the middle and repeat that cycle over again. I guess since there would be air resistance because air would fill that hole you would eventually stop, right in the middle?

Couldn't they try this in space? With a much smaller model?

Neglecting wind resistance, you would end up on the other side with no velocity whatever. Your potential energy at the beginning should equal your kinetic energy in the middle and your potential energy at the end. This trip would take around 42 minutes if I'm right.

because we are already spinning, you wouldn't really detect a change as far as rotation goes. about the gravity thing, lets say you jumped into a big hole, you would quickly accelerate and as you got closer to the core of the earth, increased gravity would pull you "downwards" at about 18,000mph. as soon as you passed the core you would begin to deccelerate at the exact same speed that you were falling, and by the time you got to the crust on the other side you would poke out of the hole just as much as you were when you first jumped in, except now upside down, before earths gravity began to pull you back towards the core once again.

I didn't read all the previous reply but:

I had the same question and I asked my Physics teacher about it.

If you make this hole and there's no friction, air resistance or any other things that would make you lose energy. All your potential energy from the point where you jump would equal your cinetic energy when you fall. This mean that if you jump at sea level on the surface of the earth, you would fall through that hole until you reach the center and right there your speed would decrease. You would logically come out at the exact same height from where you jump but at the opposite side of the earth.

But if there's air resistance or anything, you would oscilliate from one side of the earth to the other until you arrive at the exact center of the air where you would ''fly''. You would be weightless since there would be no forces applied on your body.

Hope it's clear cause it's kinda hard to explain.
