Long-boarding.

I need something to do during the summer since I gave up baseball and long-boarding seems really fun. I need something to do until ski season comes along again. So if you guys could help me out with some boards and tips or anything I would appreciate it. Sorry if there has been a lot of threads about this.

yes, there have been a lot of threads on this lately but I just got into longboarding and I love it. I did a lot of research and these are pretty good beginner decks for cheap!

$140-$150ish COMPLETE Silver Kracked Longboard (good, flexible)
$120-$150ish COMPLETE Sector 9 Longboard (beginner, but good for bombing hills, learning)
$150-$200ish COMPLETE Landyachtz Longboard (definately intermediate-advance, but would be a good board to learn on as a beginner and then use as an advance.

Check out www.bclongboards.com I bought one last summer and it is real nice.

The eel is considered to be just as good or better as a loaded dervish and a fraction of the price.

If you are looking for a downhill board landyatzch makes great boards.

BUSTIN! that's all I can say, I got myself a strike and it is great for everything, kracked skulls from what I have heard is good, loaded is amazing, I would definitely check those out, sector nines are not worth spending your time on, earthwing's seem tight, and Arbor is also really fun, oh and how could I forget about Landyachtz, those are pretty quality and made in canada.
For wheels I would definitely go with orangatang 4presidents or anything orangatang really.
for trucks I would go with randall's they hold up really well, I have those on all my boards, I have heard good things about paris also.
bearings go for your classic bones super reds, very fast, surprisingly fast actually.
hardware don't really matter, just get ur skateshops stock hardware

+ K to all you for the help. I was curious about getting a LONGboard or a more SHORTboard. Like the difference and which is closer to skiing. Because I pretty much just wanna feel the smooth carve of skiing on my longboard.

Check out Dregs... not a lot of people have them and they are pressed by Sector9... by far the sickest board ever.  People always want to cruise on my board cuz it's such a fun and easy board to ride, rides just like a surfboard.  I have this http://dregsskateboards.com/i-2069288-44-classic-s.html

Well, I also have the Arbor pocket-rocket, and I love that board to death, because I am really light I can't get the trucks that loose or the trucks will fall apart (they have fallen apart before) and then board is so damn responsive, fun and great for NYC (where I live and ride everyday) because of its playful-ness, if you're looking for cruising around or transporting from place to place, get the Pocket-Rocket because it is also so damn light to carry. If you are looking for bombin' some hills, sliding or freestyling. Go for a longboard, look at my other post for Longboard info

All sarcasm aside, the Dervish really is a sick board.  I would never ride anything but Loaded, and I've ridden lots of different boards.  However, to the OP, don't buy a Loaded as your first board, because they ARE damn expensive, and if you decide that you don't really like longboarding that much, it's a ton of cash down the drain that you could have saved by buying something cheaper.

dude i have the same thing! pocket rocket bamboo. i love it so much very playfull, and with the kicktail i can manual/nose manual, which makes me not want to go back to a longboard. screw longboarding, me and my friends cruise on cruisers all summer long

A short-board is better for manuevering and its lighter so pretty much short-board is a cruiser, a longboard is for sliding, dancing, bombing and such

Makes sense, I will probably get a short-board then if i'm into it I can get a long-board later on. Do short-boards still ride well on hills?

Not at all, they are for mostly flat land messing around, quick turns. Little bit of flat land sliding. Just think of it as ski blading, fun until your friends find out.

you couldnt be more wrong, snowblades are a joke, cruising is just as legit as longboarding.
I dont longboard i cruise because I like the kicktail for manuals, and also the added maneuverability.
I dont care about huge ass hills as much so i am willing to give that up. Cruising is fun

All I want for now is something I can do for fun and maybe get some exercise. I want something fun to do in the summer and maybe get in some shape. I live in Long Island, the suburbs so I just wanna ride around bump some music or such and have a good time. But flying down hills does seem fun, but for now the price is pretty important. I appreciate everyone's help. I gave everyone who helped + K.

not really similar to skiing. some boards are more similar to snowboarding. i think a good board for u by the sounds of your description might be the original apex 34. good for carving and shreddin around by the sounds of the reviews abd the looks of the videos. check it out

This is what I have. Great for everything, bombing, carving, and cruising. It fits in my locker so it's my transportation to and fro schooling. So flexy and not too much moola.
