Pot Smoking Skiers Arrested in Atlantic Canada

Four people are facing drug and other charges following a crackdown on pot-puffing skiers at Mont Farlagne in Edmundston.

Some undercover officers recently took to the slopes after ski hill officials complained to police about marijuana use by skiers, said Edmunston police Insp. André Madore.

"They were getting some feedback from some clients of problems with intimidation and drug consumption on the slopes in and around the Mont Farlagne site," he said.

"So they asked us if there was something we could do to assist them with those problems, and we put some plainclothes officers on the slopes."

Four people have been arrested for a variety of drug offences, Madore said Wednesday.

"Charges are pending in those cases and they're still under investigation at this time," he said.

"One subject was arrested for assaulting another individual. The guys made an arrest of one individual who had several outstanding warrants of arrest."

Police will continue to monitor Mont Farlagne for the rest of the season, Madore said.

ok i hate to rant on this

But really? Is this what our tax dollars are going to? Arresting a bunch of pot smoking skiers? And for the mountain, a place that always seemed kind of hip and cool with that kind of stuff is starting to crackdown now too.

I think the U.S. and Canada need to reprioritize on what to focus crime prevention on, such as murders, shoplifting, hell even drunken driving, cocaine and other more serious drugs for all i care and stop wasting their time on a couple kids smoking pot and going skiing.

The seattle police chief (where i live) has now officially made marijuana the lowest priority of his police department, whether it should be all the way down there is up for debate but to be pursued as seriously as it is now is unjust and a waste of government time and money.

As much as I hate to hear cops doing more to bust weed smokers, if there is assault and intimidation going on on the mountain, and these people are just smoking in the open, I can understand why the mountain called the cops. There is a difference between getting high and skiing, and being a dirtbag on the mountain, and the ski resort was clearly targeting the latter, who I am sure were hurting business. If you gotta toke, remember than not everybody wants to know about it, have a little respect and hike it out into the woods. Oh yeah, and don't assault or intimidate people.

If you click on the link at the bottom of the article theres 4 pages of comments by readers...all expressing their disgust over the RCMP wasting Canadian tax dollars on something so frivolous. Good to know even non-skiers and residents there think this is ridiculous.

Well, my point is...(and I didn't click on your icon to see if you are american or canadian) but if you are Canadian, you probably are aware what this news source is - CBC. It's a bit stereotypical to say, but I will since Im a journalist working for the competition - that CBC News, and its readers - (often times)for the demographic, is a really austere pompous group - who casually reply with comments advocating castration for meth users and criminals of all sorts....so I find it interesting to see the response by my parents demographic to be that of..."screw you RCMP and leave the kids alone."

yea right.

cbc has a left-wing liberal bias.  they all have a vehement distaste for authority (not to mention their snowballing hatred of the rcmp due to the vancouver airport and drunk/hitnrun/murdering officer incidents.  they have hearts bigger than their brains.

and most are forgetting that in small town canada, places like edmunston, the only police force is the rcmp, so the job came down to them.

i wouldn't read much into the opinions of the readers of the cbc.

As someone who grew up in Bathurst New Brunswick, I receive what your saying about the distaste for the RCMP although the Van airport taser incident wasn't the catalyst - it goes way beyond that. Anyway - plus k to you for the insight on both sides of the fence. I'm going to assume you're a CTV supporter instead. If so, keep it locked so I get paid.

sucks, but there really is no argument in their favor. The kids were being douches to people, and were smoking, which regardless of your opinion, is still illegal. So it was well within the mountain's rights to get the police involved.

in my opinion, being an ass to people is the worse thing they did.

Not really though, people keep blaming the cops here, but if a mountain calls the cops and complains about illegal activity on the hill and their customers are complaining, what should the cops have done? And I don't really feel bad for the kids who were smoking because the fact that they got caught shows that they were smoking in a place where either the cops could see them, or where the mountain staff saw them and described them to the cops. Be smart about where and how you smoke.

lol "pot puffers", it is the law, and some people are dicks. Though my brother and i smoked a joint with ski patrol in the gondi at stowe once, i always saw the skiing community to be more open to this subject.

I will def be more cautious now

It sounds like the kids who got busted were asking for it. Pieces of shit who act like the run the hill and can do whatever they want deserve what they get. Picking fights and openly smoking weed is definitely fair grounds for cops I would say. If they would have done what everyone else does and went into the woods and just left everyone alone they would be all set. The mountain can't have a bunch of dickhead kids ruin business.

Jesus christ this is all so ridiculous!!!

 me and my buddy got busted last year at our home mtn(in NC) because some cock sucking lift opp snitched on us for toking up a quick bowl on the lift. (i know it sounds dumb as shit, but people do it all the time, our town is pretty pro-weed) luckily, they didn't press charges because me and my friend have been skiing there all our life, and both of our parents are good friends with the owner. but we got kicked out for the rest of the season!!!

i guess the lesson learned for everyone is, dont smoke trees while you are skiing. unless your in boulder.

Its litke this, the ski resort gets complaints, thus they have to file a report cause its bad for business. Police get the report and have to do something about it, its really not hard to understand. I can see how it can get out of hand, i mean theres lots of guys that get too cocky and just park in the middle of the slope to burn, thats not good, people dont like it, and it is still against the law.

Don't do it in people face, your just asking for it. If these kids were being fucking stupid about smoking then maybe they deserved a lesson, but I still don't think cops should have access to the mountain to make a petty arrest for smoking dope....kinda lame.

since your reading comprehension is lacking, let me reiterate.

if that is the case then the police have the right and the obligation to respond to the concerns of the hills owners and its patrons.

not to mention the vagueness of this article leaves a lot to be desired.

and hanging out in a group of people with like minded interests doesn't make it true. 

and i don't know what i have to get over. i'm the one saying that one persons opinion can mean nothing to the next;  including yours.

and the tax dollars thing is a pretty weak argument.  considering the way our tax dollars have been misappropriated in this country over the years.  spending it to arrest some aggressive pot smokers is insignificant.

You are complaining because you assume the ski resort is private land?  And THE OWNERS were the ones that called the police, so I take it you dont think the owners of property have the right to call the police about illegal activity?  Go back to your crack pipe, you are making no sense!

The MANAGEMENT called the police!  The ski resort either leases the land or owns it, so they aren't supposed to be able to have the police come and deal with criminal behaviour???  Some people here really need to put down the crack pipe!!
