Attention all drummers: getting my first drum set

So I'm looking into getting my first set. I do not know much about drumming at all, except I do know that it is a ton of fun and I can shred any song on expert in gh/rb and that I have wanted a set for a while now. Basically what I do know is that I'm looking for a pretty decent 5 piece set with all the hardware for under $500, if that is at all possible. If you could recommend me some brands and different sets it would be much appreciated.

under 500 is going to be hard to find with all the hardware, especially if you're looking new...look around where you live for people/stores selling used sets since it sounds like this is your first set.  then after playing for a while search for something better and more expensive. 
And not trying to be a dick, but just because you can shred any song on guitar hero does not make an instant allstar

if this helps at all I recently bought a Gretsch Catalina Ash kit and absolutely love it

haha i know i suck at the drums. gh/rb isn't anything like real drumming its just pretty fun to do. thanks for the help

musicians friend has some good beginner sets that include 1 or 2 cymbals for roughly that much
but do not bother with the cheaper brands like sound percussion and shit
 look for a cheap pearl or yamaha
they are really good and good priced

i say for your price range just find a friend that's willing to sell theirs. one of my best friends left for college and he sold me his set for 400$ for 2 cymbols 2 high hats (one for backup haha) 2 snare drums, 1 ride cymbol, a bass drum high tom low tom and floor tom. ha youre going to get wayy better deals if you buy from people you know.

Ok so for my first set waaaay back i got a pearl forum for like 400 bucks. It is pretty nice and will hold you in good standing for a long time. I would shop around on teh interwebz for a while to find what you are really looking for. Check out your local shop and ebay just to make sure you're getting the right deal. Don't forget that the style of playing you will do will also effect the type of set you want...

Damn, I wish you had posted this like a month earlier. I was selling my full drum set for around your price.

you don't need a 5 piece set. You could save some money by just skipping the second tom.

And people are recommending expensive kits too. Pearl and Gretsch are obviously nice to have, but i've had and still play a shitty supra kit that sounds amazing. Heads are equally important.

I guess what my goal is is to get a decent setup now, so that in a few years I don't have to buy new heads and cymbals and stuff like that.

It's gonna be hard to get symbals you aren't gonna want to upgrade for your budget.

Id definitely say cymbals are more important to splash (no pun intended) out on than a kit. You can get a reasonable sound out of a cheap kit just by getting nice heads and tweaking stuff around but if youve got crap cymbals you definitely know about it. If you're really serious about it then thats my advice but you might wanna find a practice studio or someone with a kit just to play around on and see if you like it and get the feel. Once you start to get a few beats down drummings one of the funnest things to do ever.

you live in aurora? bump your price up to 800 and I'll sell you my tama starclassic set, all dw hardware, dw7002 pedal, ludwig snare, remo ebony ambassador heads. no cymbals though. I'm a 20 minute drive away..
