Math question! please help if possible.

ok so we're inversing functions in my precalc class.

the function looks like this: d=0.057x^2 (the "x^2" means X squared.)

and i want to inverse it, so it would look like x=0.057d^2, and then i would solve for x by taking the square root of the right-hand side of the equation.

my question is DO I SQUARE ROOT THE "0.057" also?

ANY help would be appreciated. im just sooooo rusty on my math after being out for two weeks with mono.

nope.  divide by the .057 or whatever it was, and then square root.

This is right. The exponent only applies to the x, not the decimal. Divide both sides by the decimal first.

sorry for the double post, but i suppose i could have clarified more.  you'd divide both sides by .057, so you'd have

x/.057 = d^2

then square root the entirety of both sides, giving you

sqrt (x/.0570) = d

don't you have to square root both sides though.

ex.

(I can't remember the numbers)

d=.057x^2

divide by .057

.057=x^2

in order to get rid of x^2 you have to square it, and you have to square root the other side.

so the answer is x=[squareroot].057

hah, yeah, a lot of people seem to have a mental block when it comes to completing the square.  feel free to pm me if you ever run into problems with it.  i'm a math major, so i hope i know it pretty well =P

wait till you get to calculas. I mean i would say that pre calc is harder. But when you start calc your going to be like "what the fuck does any of this mean"

yeah i got you. i think the problem is just that we have to RELEARN EVERYTHING. its nuts. and then all this stupid shit about manipulating these functions. ugh this is so fucking stressful.
