Linux or Windows Vista? Or Neither?

Aight, short and sweet I have Windows Vista. I HATE IT! My friend recommended Linux (ubumtu) but also says that its harder to sync ipods and such. Should I stay with Vista, switch to Linux or switch to something else. Detailed posts would be nice. +k for good answers. I know this should be in media and arts but I figured I'd get more answers here. And YES I Searchbarred.

Linux sucks... for every app you need to search the internet for a linux driver and you need to download it for every application and it gets annoying and some apps you cant fund em.

sorry, kinda in a rush when I typed this.

I don't like Vista because its ugly looking, the drivers suck, theres so many applications that aren't compatible. And just general usability blows.

what kind of applications arent available to vista? mac apps? when you search for the applications just type in vista before the name. i have never had any problems with vista and i think that it is much better than xp and much easier to use. it is a bit slower, but just dont run as many things at once if you want it to be faster. and how is vista ugly? i think it is wicked clean.

Download a new theme to vista, you can make it look however you want. XP is more customizable with hacks though.

Ubuntu is a pain, had it, thought i was cool, and couldn't get itunes to work... back to vista. still no problems or complaints with it...

well right now for as far as gaming goes you've got vista or 7, cause linux runs games like pure shit no matter how you tweak it. plus most of the good high RAM apps i know of only work on windows, i'm thinkin editing, mixing, etc.
just put up with vista until you can get 7, that's what i'm doing.

linux mint is a modified version of ubuntu that is more user friendly

i currently have my computer dual booted with linux mint and windows 7 and until recently i was running windows vista

Linux is fun, its efficient so its good if you have a shitty computer.  It doesn't have a whole lot of features, its pretty much just super basic.  It could do the job, but i wouldn't recommend it as a main operating system.  a fairly large amount of programs aren't compatible

Windows 7 is what vista should have been.  It's efficient, cool, and loaded with helpful tools and features.  It's compatible with pretty much everything because it can run a virtual version of windows vista and xp.  I love windows 7.

my two cents, Windows 7 is 120ish, you may get a discount if you have vista.  Get it, unless you really don't have the money.  And vista is no worse than linux, download a service pack for vista and see if that fixes your problems.  Vista was very buggy when it was released, but by now it's pretty solid (as long as you got the updates)

This ^.  Excellent post.  I run Kubuntu, and like others have said it is still kind of like a "Hobby" it is sweet as hell though.  You can do so much with it, and it is free.  But if you aren't slightly computer savvy then it can be really difficult.

W7 is going to be awesome.  Great with drivers, they fixed a ton of stuff, basically as was said everything that Vista should have been.  It is also cheap.

Personally I would go with W7 and dual boot a Ubuntu iteration just so you can get familiar with the software.  It would be a perfect setup.

examples please, I havent run across a single exe i couldnt make work, and I could force a lot of XP drivers onto Vista too.

you should check out windows 7, it will destroy vista and there have been really good reviews so far.  Ive tried it and like it a ton.  General usability and the look and feel of it is really nice

ive been running windows 7(rtm ultimate) for almost 2 months now. it is flawless in my opinion. I didnt even do a clean install, i just upgraded from vista 64, and it took about 20 minutes! so fast.

before the installation, it warned me that it wouldnt be able to update two drivers(big deal!), my mouse driver and something else, but i forget. everything else, driver-wise, installed perfectly. i updated my mouse drivers manually after without any problems. then i updated my ati drivers from their site, and again no problem. all my av buttons worked... and programs worked as well. seriously, windows 7 is a masterpiece.i would truly recommend this, i would be shocked if you didnt like it.

startup and shutdown times destroys vista. pm me or post in here if anyone wants any more information!

Google is coming out with their own operating system, Chrome OS. i think next year possibly. But i would just get windows 7 when available.

I would dual-boot that at most.  It doesn't sound like a good standalone OS to me.
