What makes a real skier?

So skiing is progressing at a scary-ass rate where double flips are starting to be looked at as if they are easy and that they are not good enough anymore. And more and more people are coming into the parks, trying to imitate what they see from the pros. Now the number of hoodrats are at their peak, but some of them can't even ski anything outside of the park.

So what I want to know is what you guys think a true skier really is. Are they people that ride their skis only in the parks, on urbans, and on the backyard setups? Or are they the people that can ride in the park, and then hold their own in the rest of the resort? Or are the only real skiers the people that can ski BC and huck 30 foot cliffs like its nothing?

Give us your opinion.

Personally i think its people that have all around skills. People who can throw down in park, but still go out and drop cliffs and ski pow.

Well ya it might seem like thatl, but I was just watching all of the Massive behnd the scenes videos and they were talking about why they were impressed with tanner and how he can ski pow one day and then compete in Xgames in the pipe the next. And I know a lot of people are turning into park rats now so I just want to hear what people think.

And I know that I am not the best skier out there by any means. I can throw 5s, drop some cliffs, but I just do it for fun. Not for the image. Skiing is just my place to get away from everything.

So only someone with all around skills like tanner is a true skier? All of those big mountain skiers, olympic racers, gapers snowplowing down with their family, old guys on their straight skis, none of those guys count as true skiers? You cant be fucking serious. More and more newschoolers are just thinking up ways to force themselves into their own categories which somehow put them above everyone else. Kindly go fuck yourselves you arrogant pricks~

Not at all what I am saying. I just wanted to know people's opinions on stuff like this. And yes I did word this wrong so I understand how people will read this and be pissed. Just most of the media now a days is going to the park skiers who can throw double flips and stuff. Considering that the only two skiing events that are shown on tv really are X games and now the Dew tour most people consider these people to be just "freeskiers" and nothing much else. And now that is what a lot of kids coming up are trying to be. I just was curious to as like if these kids that are only trying to imitate the pros and can only ski park are considered "True" (for lack of a better word) skiers. Or are they a completely different thing and just "freeskiers"?

Ok first of all this is in the NYT and I live on the West Coast so I do not get this. The media that kids actually see, cuz barely any read the newspaper (let alone look it up online), is from the people that are throwing double flips and that are park skiers because people find it so interesting how people can control their bodies like that. Second of all, I am talking about skiing on basic cable that is Actually advertised so people know it is going to be on. X-games is the main one. And last year dew tour came on. All of the FIS events are not advertised and you have to go search to figure out when they will be on.

A real skier is anyone who goes out and is not afraid to push themselves to try new things, and has fun in the process.  I just watched Warren Miller's Higher Ground again and watched 87yr old Klaus Obermeyer stick a rodeo 5 while laughing.  That is a real skier.

I can honestly say I have never seen this on ESPN. Maybe once on NBC. maybe I just need to watch more tv. or watch it at the right times. my bad for being unknowledgeable in this. next time ill think out my thread more. and not just post it right away hahah

like racing and stuff every couple months, but not that often. I was just like talking more about big mountain stuff. Thats what I hardly ever see on tv. I was not talking about racers as much because that stuff is just ridiculous what they do.

A true skier is anyone who is dedicated to the sport and does it to have fun.  They never make any excuses to skip skiing, they go as much as possible, And they do it no matter what the conditions are or if they are skiing alone or with all their friends..

if someone loves skiing as a passtime, recreational sport, hobby or passion (etc.). they are a skier

seriously, dont look down on those who dont ski as much or arent as into skiing as us.  We aren't elitest jerks.  When people start doing that, it reminds me of some of the rich arrogant dickheads in my town.  Shit pisses me off.  We all love clicking in and being on snow.  plain and simple.

if any of these "are you a real skier" threads come up, im going to flip.

saying your not a true skier becuase you can't ski more than one discipline (park, pow, groomers) is like saying you're not a true football player just because you can run really good but you can't throw..  does that make sense?

yep.

I would consider those people to be simply be people who enjoy skiing. they don't identify themselves with ski culture, they don't make an effort for it to be a big part of their lives. That's absolutely fine, but a weekend warrior is not a true skier, even if that's where most of the money in the ski industry comes from.

some people (like me) have to drive hours just to go to a mountain.  I'm not complaining but with school its almost impossible to go from monday-thursday.  Let alone having to juggle work and volunteering as well.

not all of us live 30 minutes from a fabulous mountain 

So yes i do consider myself a weekend warrior because those are the only days I CAN ski with the exception of days off/vacations.  I know tons of people that go just on weekends like me but just ski groomers the whole time.  I do consider them skiers because they love skiing just like me.
