here's how i would do it.
open the photo in photoshop
Then go to Image>Image Size, and bump that thing up to 300 dpi. never ever ever do this if except to pen tool something.
Save it as a jpeg, then you're done with photoshop
Bring the jpeg into illustrator, create a new layer for the trace, and get to work.
It's nice to have the trace on a separate layer so you can check your progress without deleting the photo
the more you do this, the quicker it will go
your eyes are probably ready to bleed from staring at the screen so long, but at long last you have your elephant
