Are you really a skier?

I just had an interesting conversation with a friend of mine
She competes in freestyle skiing and is very good. She goes to an academy over the winter instead of school to practice and what not. she used to have to go up to sugar bush EVERY weekend which is like a 5 hour drive

so basically, her life is skiing. now heres the thing
she said something about skier friends and i said "well im a skier" and she said i wasnt. i was just someone who skis.

her arguement was that because my life doesnt actively revolve around skiing, i am not really a skier, im just someone who enjoys skiing (first of all the just doesnt make sense...).

but here's my counter argument.
1. If i had the money, i would absolutely have a ski house and go up every weekend to ski
2. I would ski competitively if i could, but my parents never got me into it (like they sign you up for soccer when your little) because we never really had the chance...
3. i am basing part of my college decision on location. right now, i would love to go to colorado college. d3 lacrosse, great school, and GREAT SKIING
4. i spend hours on NS and backcountry.com and other sites looking at skking related shit and researching and what not.

so althought i dont actually ski nearly as much as her (she would be active), i care probably almost as much about skiing as she does. infact i know people who compete that care less about skiing than i do.
what do you guys think?

c'mon dude...

you don't ski so you can claim it! you ski for the feeling it gives you and the smile it puts on your face when the sky is blue, the sun is out, and your killin it. it's not about the clothes or even what you ride on. and it's most certainly not about how many days you ski, what ski school you go to, and what events you compete in.

so tell your friend that you don't wanna be on team x-skis cause you a soul skiah bitch!

Well I logged less than 30 days this season. Half were pretty much park only days. And it didn't bring up the stoke a whole lot because I suck and pussy out of lots of stuff. I would not consider myslef a park skier. The other days I rode were just riding the mountain, being out there in the snow, hopefully with some freshies. Jibbing all over the hill, stupid fun things like polish donuts and such. As soon as it gets serious it loses lots of its appeal to me. Skiing is fun, and those days that just put a permanent smile on the face and make me all jittery give me reason to live. Landing in powder as well... Mmmmmmm. Those are the times that I think about every day of my life, and drive me to find a place like NS to talk with other ski-crazed peeps. I don't compete and I can't do any respectable tricks and I can't race, but I would still think anyone who doesn't consider me a skier is rather retarded.

So from my perspective, as long as you have the stoke alive you are a skier. Simple. She has nothing to argue against that.

Okay, 1st of all she goes to a ski academy and most of the people who go to ski schools wether it be for racing or freestyle are a little fucked in the head to begin with. I should know I almost went to one my self and am glad I didn't. 2nd It's freestyle it isn't all about competitions. That should tell you right there that she doesn't really know what she's talking about. 3rd Why do you care what she says. You're not the one who has to get up at 5:30 every morning to do dryland training (it's important to stay in shape but it isn't racing. most of the muscles you use you develop just by skiing all the time. and the most important thing is mindset anyway.) before class then skiing. And getting a bad education. (which I know isn't true for ALL ski schools but it is for MOST.) 4th If you're only skiing once in a while then maybe she's right. but the fact that you're on NS in the 1st place suggests that you know at least something about skiing.

My advice is don't listen to academy kids. They're bred to be overly competitive singularly focused assholes. (most of the time) But they can't help it their coaches and school push them to be better than their friends in such an unfriendly way that you never really learn what skiing is really about. And thats having fun and having a love for the sport. (beyond that of normal people) so who cares if she thinks you're a skier or someone who skis. As long as you're having fun just do what feels right.

i think anyone who loves and enjoys the sport can call themselves a skier

i agree with what's been said, this is such bullshit. i am not good at skiing park. i suck, and i'm trying to get better, but i'm not great. does that mean i'm not a skier? hell no. skiing is about going out there and having the time of your life, whether it's in the park, the pow, groomers, the lift, the caf or the ride up. whether it's a shitty day or you're getting dumped on, just enjoy it. you don't need to ski everyday and go to an academy to know that, or to feel that.

Tony Rossi from Meathead sums this up perfectly:
Skiing isn't about who can go the biggest or who can ski the nastiest lines. It's about sharing the mountain experience with people who are close to your heart. Whether it's your first time on skis or your a professional, we all get the same enjoyment from sliding down a hill on two awkward pieces of wood with fresh air in your face and beautiful views.

Could not be said any better. Dude fuck what everyone else says. Do you put your boots into a ski binding? Dude if you go buy a pass, ride up the lift and ski down, how the hell are you not a skier. if skiing puts a smile on ur face whether its a shitty ass rainy day or killer pow day then ur a skier flat out. As for ur friends argument that if u don't compete or go to a ski academy ur not a skier i would love to see her tell Mike douglass or mark abma that their not skiers cuz they don't do either of those things.

being a skier is so much more than gear or how far you travel to get to a mountain, its about passion.  ive seen people who have all of the latest gear who ski a couple times a year and don't really care to go even if its snowed a foot in the past 12 hours.  conversely ive seen people who have gear they got from D.I. (for non-Utahns its a second hand thrift store) and consistently go skiing at least a couple times a week. 

your gal pal is elitest and rude. who the fuck is she to say who is and isnt a skier?  who has the right to say that at all?  seriously only really you can decide whether or not you're a skier!  its up to you to decide if it is really more than the fun thing you do some weekends and if its something that is really a part of your life that you will pursue until the day you die.  I invite everyone and anyone to ask themselves this question and see what they discover.

Sounds like your (OP) friend is making a pretty elitist statement.

I hear the same thing from people who grew up surfing, saying that people who picked it up later in life "will never be surfers, just people who surf". As if you had a choice where you grew up, some people happen to grow up in Nebraska. Heck, I live 5 hours from the nearest reasonable mountains, but I head straight for the hills when I have the time off and I save money to pursue my hobby.

The OP is clearly really passionate about skiing, and as far as I'm concerned, he's a skier.
