We're even invading NS. Holy Shit.
Actually, this is an alias. I am gay. I've been on NS for years. Some of you know me. You may think it's cowardly to pick an alias as opposed to using my real name. I agree. But I have two reasons for doing this. First, I am an Orange Name (CLAIM!). Since they made me orange, it's made me realize what I say on NS represents me professionally and the companies I work with. I want the freedom to act without fear of hurting any of those people. Also, I can always make the decision to delete this account but I can't go back in the closet. Cowardly, but this is a first step.
I've recently come to the decision that homophobia and ignorance on NS are partially the result of me doing a really poor job of letting you know I exist. So I feel the need to change that, but this is actually the first time I've ever done anything to represent the gay community, so I have no idea what I am doing.
I really don't hate the people who say "Marriage is between a man and a woman" or "Queers are weird-ass motherfuckers that freak me out." Actually, I take responsibility. It's easy to say "Gays are freaks of nature and shouldn't get married," when you don't know any. I think I said the same thing when I had a girlfriend and was in denial of the obvious. It was getting know gays that changed my mind and allowed me to accept who I was. Perhaps the reason gays are popping up everywhere is that Prop 8 has made us realize that the only way we're going get the rights we've been forbidden is to make the general public more aware of who is being hurt by these laws--especially gays like me who don't fit any of the stereotypes.
To Drew. and all those members who have spoken in our defense, I can't say how much I appreciate it. You've spent more time and more energy fighting ignorance than I have. It's because of you that I feel the need to say something. I know I am not the only active gay member on here. There are probably quite a few, but it's scary to be out of the closet. Unfortunately, we need your help changing people's minds. Thanks for making NS a place we feel welcome.
