What would you like to have that doesn't exist

I'm an industrial design student in Cincinnati gearing up for my senior thesis project next year.  I would really like to do something ski related but haven't really been thrilled with any of my ideas so far, so I thought I'd pose this to you guys:

What have you always wanted someone to make?  Nevermind the type of product.  It could be outerwear, boots, helmets, goggles, gps, avalanche safety, or just a specific feature in something.  Anything you can imagine; what do you wish someone would invent for skiers?

personally what i would want, as an east cosat skier who for a good part of the season skis park and groomers, i want a race ski that is a twin tip. or atleast like a carving ski they turn so sick and i would love that kind of performance with a twin tip unfortunatly that does not exist

lol none of these responses will help him.  I doubt mine will either, but I will go for it.

1) Skis with stainless steel edges.  Never dulled, never rusted.

2) A truly adjustable flex ski.

3) An insulated softshell jacket with newschool style.

4) A ski boot that has an interchangable bottom piece of the 3 piece design.  So the shin and ankle piece will always be rigid, but you could change out the toe box area to be soft and comfortable like a snowboard boot.

ID say theres a huge need for stylish (not trendy) outerwear that addresses how its really used. All the music pocket systems suck, thatd be a huge area for improvement, as would more durable gators and cuffs. Also, I think itd be really cool to look at the customizable aspect of stuff. not in the cheesy snap on cover sort of way, but like, if you could supply a plain ass white boot or glove or something that was designed to be taken apart and dyed and take spray paint. You could even put out some basic templates and see what kinda color combos people come up with for your final. Lot of inline skates are like that, and the shit people come up with is crazy. I still think a pump up air boot like the DCs would be dope too, but thats got to have some heavy duty patents over it. maybe a DC ski boot concept?

oh and to the first person to respond, there are park skis really good at carving...If you are comparing carving skis to anthems, then no, but to something like Chronics that are made to be mounted 6 back and are fairly stiff and built around that mount will be similar..  And Pipe Cleaners are 10mm directional and reco. of 5 back, so there is another one, with a race base and medium flex.  You have lots of options for skis like that already

I think it would be great to have a sled that can get back to the bottom of your tree or pillow line all by itself.. So something with a gps system and auto pilot drive..

im not trying to shit on you, but have you ever skied a real carving ski? park skis are equivalent to an intermediate level all mountain cruiser ski at best. there really is a need for a twin tipped ski that can actually lay down some arcs on east coast ice. unfortunately, a good carving ski is what park skiers would call ridiculously stiff, and a good park ski is what racers call a noodle. so what that other guy said about a truly adjustable flex might be a good idea. that and if you take what integrated binding systems have done for carving skis and introduce it to a park setup.

the ideal product of this would be like an 80mm waist, fat tip and tail, tight radius, adjustable flex twin tip with integrated bindings.

the problem with the flex thing is that good carving skis have metal in the core, and metal doesnt soften and harden at the touch of a button.

My head madtrix carved pretty well on east cost ice. But those were the best carving twin around at the time I bought them and they were super stiff for a park ski.

skis that could change the dimensions depending on what your skiing, and edges that could get sharper or more dull depending on if your carving or hitting rails, and lastly bases that waxed themselves with the perfect wax for the temp.

It was called the reactor, and it failed.
Although the p18 toe does pivot, just not around the boot.


I would like you to invent a girlfriend who does not bitch when you spend too many days skiing.

On the reactor note however,
A system that you could interchange skis and bindings, that did not way a ton or break. That way you could own one pair of bindings and switch them between skis. It could also make it so you could switch which bindings were on which ski. So I could have my p18's on my ski for when I am skiing the resort, then switch to dynafits or a duke when I want to go touring.

yeah I used to race.  I see what you are saying though, a twin tip that is extra stiff and has a lot of sidecut right?  like maby what you would want is a stiff ski that is about 130-80-123(that much tail for the point of it being a twin).  personally I do not like big sidecuts, but I can understand the want for that by some.  Alpha 1s might feel somewhat like that(because the sidecut is in such a short area for how big it is) and for the integrated bindings, I think it would be easy to use some Tyrolia race plates or whatever on a park ski if you want(they aren't hard to get, they were on a lot of Head race skis, and I am pretty sure you can take off the whole raser(or riser?wahtever) plate from those and mount that on any flat ski and mount any Tyrolia on that).  I might have some of those plates somewhere, not sure anymore..  the con of that is rails are harder with bindings w/high stand height(balance).

like the burton est binding u can ajdust them to what ur riding. it would be kinda cool for a ski to do that u could adjust the binding center mount for ridin park or push them back for ridin powder. idk

Tyrolia has had that system for a long time. The problem with these systems are that they add weight and height to the binding and they're just another thing to break. Ski companies can barely make a binding that holds up to park abuse, never mind making that binding move.

the alpha 1s have a fairly short radius, only 14-15 m i think. so they would get pretty close to a twintip carving ski

shit that would be nice, like the head up display in jets. where you could see: your speed, angle of the slope your skiing on, the temperature, ways to the freshest untracked pow, crazy gapers waiting in the landing (which you cant see from the top), and maybe X-ray vision to see through the outerwear of hot babes XD
a button on the side to call a heli would be rad too.
best idea so far IMO
