I am sooo sick of people going around the park acting sooo cooool and badass  that their not wearint a helmet. Youre not cool youre just stupid. In the beginning my parents made me wear a helmet but now im glad i did because it saved my life so many times i would be dead if I did not have it on. Helmets look so much cooler too. I think people who dont wear helmets are stupid. they think their cool but their just not. If you take a bad fall without a helmet you can die easily.

This is certainly a possibility.  Resorts want to reduce their liabilities, which in turn reduces their insurance premiums.  It seems natural to bitch about insurance companies, but they are not the problem in this case.  Premiums are based on what they expect to pay out in claims.  An insurance company with no money is not of much use to anyone.  Until people stop suing ski areas things will not change.

Thirty years ago people did not have to wear seat belts in cars.  Now we do.  I would guess that within 20 years about half of ski ares will require helmets.  Who knows, I could certainly be wrong, but resorts will do anything to reduce their risks.  Ski industries pay a ton to insurance companies because they are very risky businesses.  Europe is not so litigious, and thus does not have this problem.

I wear a helmet.  If you don't want to, don't, but I would advise wearing one.  Wearing headphones is less important than protecting your head.  Protecting your head is more important than looking cool.

I see far more people with helmets in the mountains than I did 10 or 20 years ago.  Most people seem to finally be accepting that it is a good idea.  Remember, it is  not just about you, it is about the guy out of control behind you.

I don't see my little rant as likely to convince anyone.  Wearing a helmet is just something people figure out for themselves.  If you don't want to wear one, don't.  It probably won't cost you your life, but it might.  I guess the real question is what one gains from not wearing one.  To me it would have to be pretty important to take that risk.

One more thing, lift tickets would probably be less if more people wore helmets.  Insurance companies would charge lower premiums, which might well lead to areas charging lower ticket prices and getting the same level of profit.  It is far from certain, as what truly reduces ticket prices are fewer skiers, but it would certainly help.

Exactly. Everyone wearing helmets in cars would save thousands of lives, WAAY more than if everyone wore one skiing. Why not rant about that, thread creator?

Trampolines also cause way more traumatic head injuries than skiing, but I don't hear anyone calling out kids for bouncing without helmets. In fact there is a video on NS where a guy wears a helmet on a tramp, and the poor kid gets ridiculed in the comments section, probably by kids who wear helmets skiing.

And sorry all you claimers, but NOBODY has "had a helmet save their life lots of times", if that were actually true, all the kids who regularly ski without helmets would be dropping like flies on the mountains.

He said "wear helmets all the time", not one of the skiers you just mentioned wears helmets all the time.

They wear them when they feel it's appropriate, or when they are required to.

Because helmets are less likely to help you in the car.  Laird Hamilton and those guys do not wear open helmets surfing open ocean waves.  They wear lifejackets, carry swim fins etc....  The point is they do what makes them safe in their environment.

Helmets are not likely to help you in a car crash.  They are much more likely to help you in a bike or ski crash.

I wish this were true, all the RCR resorts have a mandatory helmet rule ( in whats left of their sad excuse for parks after they had the great idea of banning jumps) and lift tickets are still over seventy bucks. And you also have to pay five extra dollars to use the shitty rail parks. Such a bad idea.
You would think it would work to the benifit of the skier but its really a double loss in this case, eliminate jumps and the price stays stupid high.

I never gave a fuck really. As a racer I wore it all the time and then stopped, I was fine either way.

Now my opinion is different. I almost broke my fucking head today. Smashed it with a replay against the snow soo hard, it still hurts, and I almost broke my arm.

From tomorrow I'll use my helmet every day. There is really no reason why not to.

What is hard to know is whether their ticket prices would be higher without the helmet rule.  You cannot just look back either, as economic conditions are different.

The real drive for lower prices is to sell more tickets.  If the resorts would sell enough more that it would be profitable, they would.  Insurance is one part of the equation, but if I were in marketing at a resort that mandated helmet use, and had lower premiums as a result, I would try lowering the price to get more people.  As long as resorts are happy with their ticket revenue they will not lower prices.

That really sucks about them eliminating jumps.  The five extra dollars you pay might actually be to cover the added premium.  Many people do get hurt in parks, and unfortunately that means lots of risk for the area.  That's why they do lame things like eliminate jumps.
