brian mcbride, landon donovan, and all the other semi-good players got old. and not a whole lot of good young talent? correct me if i'm wrong, i've never followed US soccer closely.

but shit, mcbride was the man. anyone remember him taking an elbow to the dome in the 06 wworld cup and coming off the field with blood all over his face? that guy was sick.

I'm not surprised, soccer is like bread and butter in south america, think about how many school kids play soccer night and day in costa rica, where as US kids are fat and play video games.

The US team really isn't that terrible overall. But compared to most European sides, they are shit. Even most south american teams aren't that great, brazil and argentina are the only exceptionally good ones from that area.

Shut the fuck up, you live in the UAE. Are you even allowed to have a soccer team, or is it illegal?

Also, the U.S. soccer federation is approximately 60 years older than your country, so again, shut the fuck up.

It's one game, we're still in good shape. The game was played in Costa Rica, where we've never won a qualifier, and it was played on shitty turf.

i had originally thought soccer started as a byproduct of the french revolution,  with all the people getting their heads cut off, people ended up kicking the heads around on the street... which eventually turned into soccer.

further research after reading your post makes me want to question this, despite how awesome a story it is....

apparently not only did England export the game as we know it to the world in the 18-hundreds, it also banned it back in the beginning of the 14th century.

 (quote from King Edwards; "For as much as there is a great noise in the city caused by hustling over large balls, from which many evils may arise, which God forbid, we command and forbid on behalf of the King, on pain of imprisonment, such game to be used in the city future.")

even more interesting, the Romans played a game resembling soccer, 27 men on a side, which resulted in 2/3 being hospitalized within the first hour of game play.

It is really embarrasing. I mean our U-17 and u-20 teams arent terrible so its kinda questioning where all that talent goes. The other thing is that the us teams style is much different. We like to take our time and build an attack where as alot of european and souuth american teams like to play with a faster pace. i definately find Mls soccer boring to watch.

Yup! I watched it a bunch when I lived in CA last year. Fuck even the SPL is better than that!
Dont give up on your national team though!! Its the only sport in the world that countries actually compete against each other in. Well...the only one takin seriously/actually matters.
Maybe we should just fuck all wars and instead decide it all in 90 minutes with 22 men and a ball. Job done!

Mls is so slow its terrible. Even if there is a chance to counter they will pull it back and switch it around the defense as opposed to EPL and bundesliga where any chance they its quick and physical.

i live in the the USA and i can't stand the team.  They really are a crap team.  thats why i have to go with germany.  Such a powerhouse, you can't not like them.  i have high hopes for the DFB in 2010.

One reason the U.S. soccer team does bad is because the level of competition faced during qualifiers is quite low. The highest ranked team the U.S. plays during qualifiers is the 26th ranked Mexico. On the other hand, 18 of the top 25 teams are from Europe. Even though there are many groups of qualifying in Europe, many top teams are still in the same group (for example, England, Croatia, and Ukraine are in group 6- and all ranked in the top 20 in the world). Although the U.S. may play some top teams in friendlies, no team plays its normal starters during a friendly. So when the World Cup rolls around, they just aren't used to play serious games with top teams. So they end up sucking.

Jea, you know what's up. I lived in Berlin for seven years, and the soccer is crazy there. Even though their Liga team sucks usually (up until this season!), they still go crazy for it. I was able to visit Berlin during the World Cup in 06, and it was one of the best experiences of my life. So crazy. I too have high hopes for 2010. I have a good feeling we will proudly be singing "54,74,90, 2010!"

Seriously, I used to live in CA and Ive been to hockey, basketball, baseball, american football matches. You guys have no idea how to create an atmosphere at a sports game! If you ever get a chance go to see the euros or world cup. All countries comin together, fully kitted out in all national gear, singin, boozin, danicin and partyin. Everyone mingles and its fuckin amazin!! (as long as theyre not english, they just wanna fight)

Okay, first of all, it was only one game, shit happens. Second, the US was expected to lose in Costa Rica. It's is hard to win away matches there because of the crowd and the astro turf field which gives CR a big home advantage. Third, to everyone making it seem like the US is terrible right now, we are fourteenth in the world. So to the Australian kid who was talking shit, your team is 29th and canadians, you are in the eighties.

I was in Stuttgart for 3 weeks of the weltmeisterschaft, fucking best time of my life. It was pretty funny though when USA got beat by a 3rd world country, Gahna or Trinidad I think.

there is one canadian team...

i am sure a world cup match would be fun as hell to watch, but they dont have word cup matches here. and here, we dont really need to see all the countries come together because the u.s is made of of people from every country and we see it every day. i just find it hard to watch a sport with low scoring games, so many faked injuries, and where a player drops to their knees in disappointment every time they miss a shot, even if they shanked it.
