Out of curiosity, what are your beliefs on the existence of God?

Please be precise, and try to conform to the following:
1.  Does one exist?
2.  If so, who/what is it?
3.  Said God's moral standards?
4.  Why do you believe in said deity?

Someone who has an account on NS, then chooses to make another as an alias to post random stuff on religion, politics, or other controversial topics.

Since I've only been here for 2 days, I'm labeled a troll, as I have little to no evidence of being elsewhere on the site.

Maybe...just maybe...it's time to shut this rig down before someone starts a hit list.

I'm just curious why you made this thread. You obviously believe there is a god. So why make a thread when you know its just going to be a bunch of atheists calling you dumb? I guess you thought you could convince people that god is real through bible verses, but why is that necessary?

I really don't care what anyone believes. But the day I get on my knees to pray and give 10% of my money to a "person" is the day I jump off a bridge.

and my beliefs... very confused. i believe in the catholic idea of God, but dont agree with catholic ideologies, if that makes sense. Like i believe in God, but i dont think you need to follow all the commandments and papal rulings and shit. just be a good person and you will end up in the right place

ok, here is my belief on this thing.

i hope to hell and highwater there is some form of afterlife...  be it clouds, angels, and your relatives and friends or just something like inner peace and nirvana like buddhists believe i dont give a shit.  but one being called God taking care of everything with a son named Jesus?  (or the Islam version)....  no thanks, i dont like that idea.

Merriam-Webster's defines faith as:

2 a (1): belief and trust in and loyalty to God (2): belief in the traditional doctrines of a religion b (1): firm belief in something for which there is no proof (2): complete trust

So, scientific evidence, no. But since when does there have to be irrefutable scientific evidence in order for someone to believe in something? That's my point. I mean, isn't the basis of faith, believing in something, even though there is no indisputable scientific evidence of that belief being true or fact? Since when does evidence have to be 100% scientific in order for it to be fact?

Just /thread already. Leave everyone to their own beliefs. I, for one, could care less if someone believes in the flying spaghetti monster or is an atheist, Christian or Muslim. Live and let live.

The general belief that I hold is the following:

God exists, the Bible is his word, you follow it as close as you can.

HOWEVER.  There is a ton of controversy as to the exact definitions in the Bible, how it's supposed to be translated, interpreted, etc, etc.

So, my beliefs can be different than your run-of-the-mill "Christian".

Of course, every person will find as much evidence as possible to prove his or her own "religion" or mentality right.

Therefore, I will deign to argue with you as to WHY you believe a certain way, but I will ONLY present what made ME believe a certain way, take them as you will, since they made sense to ME.

I knew that this would be the reaction I would get.

Hell, I told Gregolian before I signed up that I was gonna get shanked in the end by someone.  But the whole thing was mainly a sociological/psychological experiment to just see what might happen.

All for the shits and giggles originally, but hey, looks like it's actually going somewhere, so what the hell?

Oh, BTW, tithing is optional in the Christian faith, it's good to give, but your own survival should come first.

Mormons, on the other hand, require it.  Dunno why, but they do.  Commies.

Well, that is the one thing I really disagree with about Catholicism.

IF they are the "TRUE" christian religion, they should use the Bible.

And the Bible says this:  "NOT BY WORKS ALONE."

I think that's pretty clear.

Well, would you rather have a socialistic afterlife?  I mean, seriously now...if there is an afterlife that EVERYONE goes to, do you really want Mr. Creepy-Pedobear-Rapist making decisions along with you?

Personally, I'd prefer to have the maker of the universe take care of things, since I'm lazy.

Besides, the Christian belief is adamant about the TRIUNE God.  Where Father=Son=Holy Spirit.

Didn't you listen at all during Kenney's lecture back in Fall?

Ghosts and exorcisms are a matter of controversy.

I've seen my share of the supernatural down in northern Brazil, but I had gone swimming earlier, and coulda drank a little bit of the water...

Also, the language thing is a matter of opinion.  Babblings and curses can sound like just plain gibberish.  Now, if ALL of the possessed sounded the same all over the world, then you can state your case.

I dunno about stigmata tho.  The markings that appear on a possessed's body.  I can't explain those, and science hasn't been able to yet either.  IF they have, please let me know, cause it'd be sweet to find out.

WHERE DID IT ALL COME FROM?

Big Bang, yes, it's a possibility, but where did the tiny-dot-no-bigger-than-the-size-of-a-period come from?  Chance?  Another world?  Aliens?  Where did those aliens come from?  That other world?

Amino Acids are made using molecules that came from somewhere...where did those molecules come from?  (See big bang)

Simple organisms...if they existed waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back when, why do they still exist now?  Just to turn us all into zombies?  (check out the other thread on Zombies, pretty funny shit there)

Advanced organisms?  They came from simpler ones, but where did the simpler ones come from?

Keeps goin back to where did it all come from IN THE BEGINNING.  Science cannot fully explain the "beginning", but it can tell you what happened JUST AFTER the beginning.

That's what religion seeks to do, give a "beginning".

i believe that... well that i don't know anything.  I can't disprove anything or prove anything, so why should i care to fully believe in anything that i can't prove.  but then since i don't fully know that it doesn't exist why should i fully believe that it doesn't

The bible was a book of morals to tell us how to live our lives and should not be taken fully literally.

also i think that fully denying that there is a God, is almost as bad as being brainwashed by the church into believing that there is.

i actually, walked out one Kenney's lecture in the fall cause i felt like he was preaching to me that i was going to hell cause i didnt believe.  Kenney is a good prof but jesusfuckingchrist is he a preachy one.

The Bible shouldn't be interpreted as just a book of morals.

If that's the case, read the hindu Dama Pata.

The Bible was a book intended to educate the "seeker of truth" (someone who had questions about life) about how Life was meant to be run, and how to come back to the beginning to fix what's gone wrong.

The problem is that people think that things can be taken out of context in the Bible.
Funny story.

A guy (James W.) would begin everyday by opening his Bible and reading what came up first.  He'd use that to run his life, since the Bible was a book of good moral standards.

However, one day he runs into this sentence:  "And judas went and hanged himself"
He says:  "WTF?  That can't be right."
So, he flips several pages and reads again:  "Go and do likewise."

Don't take the Bible out of context.  The basic message is that you have fallen away from God's plan, and all you need to do about it is come back to God, admit you have done just that, and accept the idea that God sent a part of himself (in the form of Jesus) down to save you from eternal retribution of being in denial.

Brainwashing?  More like the world is coming up with as many excuses as they can (some of them pretty hard to decipher or debunk) in order to say "GOD DOESN'T EXIST."

That's Brainwashing to me.  Now, the "Church" does a ton of that too...and they have definitely ruined the basic message of the Bible.  And it also depends on the Church.

Catholism scares the shit out of me.

Regardless of whether or not you think the bible is brainwashing. What do you feel about children in religion? To me that is a very scary thing. You can basically tell a child anything and they'll believe it. You tell them the same thing for years and it might be really hard for them to stop believing it, even if it might not be true.

There are people who believe so deeply in their faith that at death they recite the verses of their religious testament. Some people even claim that they are instruments of god and can demonstrate his power. By laws of statistics, there will always exist people who believe deeply in the opposite. Some deranged individuals will spit their "demonic language" because they are consumed by their own twisted beliefs. Such people will always exist.

Well, that is indeed a scary thought.

I was told from a young age to believe in Christianity, but as I got older, I began to ask questions.

Children should be allowed to make a final decision on their religious preference when they are old enough to actually understand it.

Generally, when I teach my Sunday School, I keep it very open, only teaching standard morals and leaving God mostly out of the picture until they're at a stage when they can start to ask questions of their own and comprehend them.

But that goes also with the worldly mentality too.  I think it's pretty gross to see gradeschoolers dressing like sluts and gang members.  We definitely have to teach kids carefully.

I've heard of this.  To a point, it makes sense.

At the same time, I'm not sure what to make of those extreme cases I've heard and seen.  Like this guy down in Venezuela who seriously set himself on fire, was lit for several minutes, got doused, and was not even singed.

As for how life first formed, science has no idea. That is not to say that God interfered - by your same argument, simply because I did not observe the creation of my Hot Pocket before I took it out of the freezer and nuked it, God himself must have placed it there for me in the frozen foods section. There are answers to these questions that are perfectly competent and make scientific sense - its just that our understanding isnt there yet.

It would be sweet to just hand all the creationists in the world a definitive history of how the universe got to the way it is now. But instead, we are left with fragments that we piece together as best we can based on good evidence and sound theory to understand with reason the world around us. If we want to instead just resort to the easy way out and say "God must have done it", then fine, lets go start another dark age.

I was talking about how origins began.  You're just talking about divine intervention.
