Same sex marriage question

i'm doing a short debate paper on gay marriage. I'm not really for or against same sex marriage, i just don't fully understand peoples problem with it. it seems like most gay couples just want the legal documents saying that they are married so that they can get tax deductions and have other benefits. it doesn't really seem like gay couples really care about the traditional side of getting married in a church. all these religious people don't want gays to marry cause the bible says married should be between a man and a woman. so why not just let gays marry for legal reasons and just not let them get married in a church?

"No one can marry someone of the same sex".

"No one can marry someone who is not of the same race."

Neither is "unequal". Both are discriminatory. But that's not the point. The point isn't "oh logically it's even because no one can do it", the point is that you are designing a rule that is INTENDED to specifically target one group of people and exclude them. Everything else is simply posturing and bullshit.

some people have the right to marry their choice, others dont. its not like people have the rights to do some kinds of coke, but not others dont because their choice of coke is illegal.

I'm not saying I'm against gay marriage, I want gay people to be just as happy as anyone else. Sorry if it sounded like i was bitching.

a similar case would be the banning of the religious use of peyote by native americans. they banned it for everyone, but in reality it only affected the native americans who used it. the supreme court, if im not mistaken, found this unconstitutional because of its obvious intent, regardless of the fact the law applied to all citizens.

listen kids i just don't think "the law is discriminatory" should be the argument. it should be "people have the right to marry anyone regardless of race, sex,ect..."sure those writing the laws can have a prejudicial or discriminatory intent. the blanket denial of a right to all people is in itself not discriminatory.

who fucking cares!! they just need to get over themselves i dont care if they fuck eachother personally i think it is wrong, very wrong but them complaining all the time about how they get tease, thats what makes people get pissed, and everytime they dont get what they want they play the " you did this because im gay" and thats fucking rediculous. they play it off like there handicap and its really annoying.

ok you are seriously retarded, black people got over it they are free which is super good, and what they did was brave, but its nothing like that. all the gay people do is complain and make things complicated, even if we made an island were we sent all gay people which would be nice, they would still find something to complain about. if they want to get married whatever. but they complain and no one fucking cares!

You were the one who basically said who the fuck should care about gay people. You brought up your opposite point of view with some rather sketchy support, and expect people not to argue with you? Discussing opinions is pretty much the point of the forums here, so if you don't like that then why are you even here? But to contribute something to the thread, how are the homosexual people going to get something done about legalizing gay marriage if they don't voice their opinions and dissatisfaction with the current system? That's how they can get people in power who aren't prejudiced against (like us on here being straight but still caring about their issues) to make a difference.

It amazes me that this has been and continues to be a wedge issue. What happened to seperation between church and state? I thought the government is established to protect people, people give some of there freedom to the government in exchange for protection and order, at its most simple form. By preventing gays from marrying, who are they protecting and how does it benefit anyone? I really don't see why people are so passionatley against the concept of gay getting married. So what they can't reproduce? Does that mean that any hetero couple that doesn't plan on having children chould not get married? Should their be a contract to produce x amount of babies for newlywed couples? The argument that because they can't reproduce is totally flawed and it doesn't prevent them from raising an adopted child. And by no means are all gay people these prancing faries everyone makes them out to be, one of the guys I know who is gay packs a Kimber 1911 .45 with him everyday, listens to country and is basically I guy who could probably whoop the shit out of most people I know. I don't know if that last part was really relevant, but my question is, if there is supposed to be a seperation between church and state, so the Bible should have no say in this, and the goal of the government is to protect it's citizens and gays getting married hurts no individual, then what is the problem?

The problem with the analogy of interracial marriage to same-sex marriage is that it assumes that the differences between races are the same as the differences between men and women. But that's just not true. While there are no significant physical differences between a black man and a white man, there are very significant physical differences between men and women. For that reason, comparing same-sex marriage to interracial marriage holds about the same logical weight as comparing same-sex marriage to polygamous marriage.

I'm all for the legalization of same-sex marriage, namely because I don't think two parents of the same sex are any more likely than traditional parents to raise kids poorly, and I couldn't care less about what else people do in their private lives. But comparing same-sex marriage to interracial marriage is about as good an argument for its legalization as comparing same-sex marriage to bestiality is a good argument for banning it. Both comparisons are pointless.

I think the point is that in the case of marriage, the TYPE of human you are (male, female, black, white etc...) should not effect the TYPE of human you choose to marry.

same-sex marriage is different  than polygamy because:

it involves ONE person marrying ONE other person, whereas polygamy does not.

and, same-sexmarriage is different than beastialiy because:

it involves a HUMAN marrying another HUMAN.

In inter-racial marriage, you have TWO HUMANS, of different TYPES. Not MORE THAN ONE and NOT AN ANIMAL. Wierd, that's the same as gay-marriage. I think it's pretty obvious.

I can't understand the"slippery slope" argument (let gay marriage pass and people will start marrying pigs).

I mean, it's just not the same thing.
