Sleeping in your car? pros and cons?

I am sleeping in my car tomarrow night and I need some advice from experiance people,

questions:

1) People I have talked says beware of mugger or criminals, is this true?  I will be up in northern maine (if anyone knows the area) at sugarloaf and sunday river.  Just wondering if I should be on the lookout

2)  Legal? I have also hear that it is illegal in some places to park and sleep over night.

3) Where?  What sort of place allows sleeping?

4)  What to bring?

I've slept in the car a bunch, never been mugged or anything. If it's illegal to park somewhere overnight hopefully you'll be woken up by the sound of the tow truck loading you up. The best places are hotel parking lots, that way you can enjoy the hot tub and continental breakfast.

make sure you have a sleeping bag. i slept in my car without one once and i was freezing. oh and mkae sure you dont park under a big light like i did..

aight car sleeping.. ive done this on many occasion, because for some reason certain hotels dont let you book a room unless your 21... which is gay

the best place to live out of your car is definately a campground, theyre pretty cheap to stay at, easy to sneak into fo free, you could bring a tent to sleep in, and you definately wont have to worry about getting mugged or raped or murdered.   camp grounds also have showers and bathrooms                                                                                                  but beyond camp grounds try those "park'n'ride" things alongside various highways,  or the resort parking lot or just somewhere out of the way of really residential areas, rest stops are good, people dont care if you sleep there and they have bathrooms and sometimes showers and places to buy food from   but sleeping in the parking lot of a gas station might get he 5-0 interested, i dont think youd get arrested or anything but theyd definately tell you to leave

bring a sleeping bag, a gallon jug of water, toobrush, toothpaste, and ipod, and some toilet paper or handi wipes, a friend, and a some herb and you should be set, the best place to sleep is to fold down the rear seats and sleep partially in the trunk

also, before you go to sleep, crack a window in the car for a little fresh air... you know foryourhealth

My bro n I did this earlier this year in Revy... We figured we could plug into a school but every school didn't have a single plug in... So we found the museum haha.... hooked up we had heat for a little dishheater from cosco, food plugin fridge. oh ya n this was all in a fordwindstar we took out all the seats but front 2 obviously lol

but ya find a van

i ride in  a suburban and if you take out all the back seats, you can fit a matrss and all your stuff no problem

don't fall asleep with the engine on.

you can sleep legally in any wal-mart parking lot.

One thing to remember is that after a few hours in the dark, the temperature in the car will drop several below most probably. So wear plenty kit, base and outerwear if you have to, and a sleeping bag.

Also, i find the best way is to tilt a seat right back, and move it right back, as you will be really uncomfortable with your legs in between the two front seats.

one thing that hasnt been mentioned yet is churches.
first off, usually no one is there at night.
secondly, if there is someone staying there it is most likely the priest and he wont call the cops on you
just lock ur doors and ur butt hole virginity will be alright.
i cant really imagine ever getting mugged while sleeping in ur car cuz if the doors are locked u can just drive a way if anything were to go down.
unless of course u did what someone above said and opened ur window a bit. that way if they were stealthy they could probably get in.

Leave a window a little bit open for some air. I've never slept in a car overnight but i know that that's one thing you want to do.

window open??? me nad my buddy stated in his jeep in the front seets with all our shit in the back it was -5 out no way were were cracking a window we drtove up to stowe and hiked mount mansfiled after they got like 60 inches of fresh back in feb

my best advice is get there late if your skiing the next morning dont get there at 6 at night, we got to stowe a little after 12 so it was perfect we were wiped from the drive so we fell asleep right away theres nothing worse than having to sit you your car or find something to do or eat, which will just waste more money you dont have

-camping equipment


just steal some hammocks or something, set them up in aisle no one ever goes in, and sleep the night away!

make sure you have like a dees ski bum vehicle .... a hippie wagon is perfect, get some really warm sleeping bags and make sure you have a knife; also block off the windows

I always slept in my car this winter when I went to mount snow don't sleep in the diver seat. go in the back and bring like 10 covers

Did it all the time back in highschool.  You just need a blanket.  No one will bother you.  If a cop does bother you just say you were too drunk to drive and did the responsible thing.  If possible just park in front of someone's house.  Your car will smell bad in the morning.

done! i guess i didnt sleep through the entire night, but i was hitch hiking and it was like 2 in the morning so we decided to sleep for a couple hours.
i just posted up in one of the clothes departments which had the little circle hanger racks.
i had no trouble at all. it was a pretty ghetto walmart though.

I say blanket over sleeping bag cause it means more mobility

Sleeping in your car is sure cheaper. My friend and I did it once weekend. We brought big feather blankets to keep us warm. In the morning we just went to a hardee's fast food restaurant to get dressed and brush our teeth. If you're ok with not showering, I say go for it.

ya man sleep in a motel parking lot i would say. i actually slept in a motel parking lot in mexico maine which is a bit outside of the bethel/ carrabbasset area. no worries there arent to many hoods in maine! haha

this.  even if there are no overnight parking signs, you probs wont get towed b/c its a 24 hour store

it works at all places that are open 24 hours btw.  I've left my car in McD's parking lots overnight a few times and its always there when i get back.

I have a bit of experience in this deparment.  First of all if its cold, have a really good sleeping bag and have a empty gatorade bottle, you will need that to pee in.  If you get up and get out of your car you lose all your heat and it takes a while to feel warm in your sleeping bag again.  something hot to drink like hot coco is nice.  Crack a window if you can, it works best if you have one of those window visor deals.  you want some fresh air in there.  if its snowing make sure you keep a flag on your car or something so a snow plow doesnt crush you, people have died this way before.  Because your cold your sleep quality will be lower.  Bring an ipod.  If you cant sleep put your ipod on with the volume low so and relax as much as you can so your body gets as much rest as possible.  It is easy to take a shotgun seat out of a car and this and the use of some wood or boxes may make a much better sleeping posistion possible.  If it nice and warm out, you got it made.  Just find a decent place to park either way.  Don't worry about muggers, just lock your doors and hide your wallet under the carpet of your car or something and take your shoe off but your car key under your insole, replace insole and but your shoes on in your sleeping bag if your really worried about it.  I have never had any trouble.

if its really cold out (i doubt it will be if youre talking about now mid / late april) those expose to air hand warmers can be great....

yea man find a walmart parking lot, I think its actually legal to park there overnight. Didnt some girls die sleeping in their car earlier this season? I would open the window a little bit maybe so nothing could happen, but then someone could break in....

if you do the campground thing my friends dad did this when we were little. anyway if you start a fire throw a big rock on. smooth works best. and then take it out an hour or something before you go to bed. it cant be red anymore. but he wrapped it in tinfoil and then paper and it was like the warmest thing ever, slept so good that night.

dunno if thats exactly how you do it...maybe google it so you dont fuck up and it catches on fire but i was just thinking that would definatly keep you warm

Seriously, what do you think your going to suffocate in your car? Your car is far from air tight.

Wal-Mart really kills the idea of sleeping in the dark with no massive bright lights keeping ya up.

I slept in the car once, it worked for me a little. You wake up with a sore back if your car sucks and you are old and decrepit like me (23 years old).

Plus law enforcement love to bug ya if they are bored. Anything considered private property and they could ask you to leave since you could be considered trespassing.

This all being said, hotel parking lots work very well, but cops sometime cruise them to look for things like this, and other mischief.
