Frat vs. GDI

Please discuss.

In wanting to end some boredem and hopefully ruffle some feathers into some real discussion, please enlighten me on why one would find it fuffilling to have two choices on weekends:

Choice A: GDI house party with the same 2 girls and 5 bucks to gain access to a keg.

Choice B: Beg your friends in a frat for access.

Now I just don't understand why one would not want to just join the greek community. Sure, talk about roofies and all your sterotypes, but you must realize that they exist in the GDI community as well. They are also in fact, for the most part, just sterotypes. A fraternity is a social network. You are never bored. When done with college, you already have all the "in"s you could ever want. There is so much to be experienced that some of you will tragically never go through. All the top shelf girls are in soroities, which you pair with 3 to 4 nights a week. Why bother hitting on the oddballs that either didnt rush or got rejected? Stick with the best.

I just dont know why someone would pick rotting in the dorms with family guy dvds over always having something to do. 4 years of you life can be a semi-fun, but overall waste, or the best time of your life.

I apologize for my argumentative nature, I just want some good discussion.

Hey buddy, I'm sorry, but you are exactly the reason why everyone hates frats.  You are a cocky mother fucker who thinks that everything you do is the greatest thing in the world and fail to recognize anything you do not believe in.  You are so  ignorant that you think the only way to have fun is to join a frat.  People wo are actually cool don't need to join a frat to have fun and have great friends. 

And by the way.....I saw what your girlfriend in the ladiesmen cult, and if thats what a the top looking sorority girl looks like at your school, i am very sorry for you and all of your "super awesome" frat buddies.

Freshman year I experienced the whole rush scene and talked to quite a few brothers from different groups about what their deal is. Thank god I met some chill kids at the outdoor store who party and actually do other shit too before I pledged to any of them.

The whole idea for the greek system seemed a bit rediculous personally. I like to think of myself as an independant person, and the idea of being duty bound to put up with bullshit from people I pay money to be associated with turned me off.

If I want to take the weekend to go skiing or climbing or reading, I don't want to put up with bitching because I didn't help set up the party. If I don't want to go to the gym this week because I'm resting for a trip I don't want to hear bitching. If I don't wear a tie to class on Monday I'm not gonna take shit for it.

My friends are my friends because they've proven themselves to be sick kids that share my outlook on life. Not because they ended up joining my frat next semester.

Great, you have lifelong "connections". I'll make my own way through life by my own merit. I'm hinging my "success" on getting some office job because the boss went to the same frat I did. Besides, if you want connections in the business world, learn to speak Hebrew and pretend you're Jewish. I promise that would work better than any frat you could ever join.

A party where the keg is the center of attention is not hard to come by anywhere. You can do much better elsewhere.

FINALLY, your perception of sorority girls about sums it up. You simply think they're better. I can only assume you use the same rational to consider yourself better than those who aren't in a fraternity. I'd rather keep my distance from girls that put so much emphasis on little bullshit hierarchical games that they play with eachother.  By joining a sorority they've proven that they aren't obese, and that mom and daddy pay their way. That's about it.

Hey, but it's good for people who feel like they need someone to structure their lives for them.

I'd rather have real friends than a bunch of people I have to pay to be around. I've had so many amazing skate seshes and adventures with my friends I wouldn't pass that up for any bitch party. I spend my days rotting away at the local skate park with my homies. Wouldn't have it any way else.

Being in a frat isn't paying to have friends. Its paying to be in a club. Just because you're in a frat doesn't mean you'll be friends with everyone else in the frat.

Both sides of this argument make such huge generalizations about the other side that its ridiculous.

Good things about being in a frat:
brotherhood, connections, lots of stuff to do

Bad things about being in a frat:
expensive, hazing (frats still haze, despite what you tell me about your frat), being REQUIRED to do certain things with the frat.

The problem people in frats is that they usually act like you can't have brotherhood, make connections, or have fun without them.

People that hate on frats do it because they assume that all people in all frats are the same. I know a bunch of frat guys that are cool and a bunch that are douches.

I personally would never join a fraternity. It just isn't for me. I don't really like going out and partying and frat parties are the worst time ever. I don't like being in crowded rooms with drunk people. I just don't give a shit about most of the things that frats around here seem to make a big deal about like tailgates, date parties, formals, and other bullshit that usually is just an excuse to get drunk.

i wish uvm had a legit scenen i also think its stupid that people are like frats thats so gay id never join one i reserve my judgement until i meet the brothers. why say you wont when u dont know the kids what if u meet em and end up likin the kids idk seems stupid to put a limit on yourself like that when you have no idea.. thats where i am right now but just cuz the scene on uvm sucks rushings all stupid everyone gets a bid etc. at a place like colgate where i want to transfer too my 2 best friends are in a frat and they fucking love it they get to choose the kids to accept and have a good

UVM was too close to home (at the time I lived in Essex Jct.), I wasn't a fan of the excessive liberal activism, and it was too big. I left the fraternity because it wasn't a fit; I didn't see the necessity in being subjected to more rules and obligations. I also don't drink, though it wasn't a problem when I first brothered up. UVM also made multiple administrative mistakes that made me incredibly disgusted with the school. For example, I transferred in some credits and the dean's office took those credits and put a 0 gpa on them, thus bringing my gpa way down and instead of asking me or warning me (though they have no reason to warn) they booted me and I had to appeal to get back in. Even when they realized they made a mistake, the woman told me that I had to appeal it anyways, as they had already done the paperwork. That was the last straw and as soon as they let me back in after I appealed, I decided it was time to move on and find a new school.

you wanna know why frats suck? see all the numbers you throwing out there? mine are all 0, because i didnt join a frat, and in no way have i had a boring social life. i've been to tons of house parties, its never 'the same two girls', its always tons of knew people to meet with good ratio of guys to girls. im not even going to ask but i would put money on it that you go to indiana university, i've heard if you don't join a frat/sorority there then you have absolutely nothing to do.

oh and, i have a few friends in frats that i get along with, but for the most part, everyone i know/met in a frat is a fucking douche bag, they think they are a higher class because they throw down a bunch of money to get ass raped for a week and call some group of guys their bro's, and they ditch their homies that they grew up with to be cool and hang out with their brothers.  don't get me wrong, there are some really cool people in frats taht i know.

that being said, i usually refuse to go to any frat party, i just dont like the vibe there, any house party is much more fun.

apartments/dorms can be just as high as the cost of a frat. you pay additional money for food.

Hahahahaha.... Or they like maintaining their individuality and not having to be a certain type of person just to belong socially. They are also socially competent enough to get girls and make friends without having to pay for them. Or they just don't want to be the type of person who thinks he's such hot shit that anyone who doesn't choose his lifestyle is probably a "gay weirdo". Dumbass, have fun being like everyone else.

So that came off a bit strong... I'm not blanket against frats. I've been to a few frat parties that were a lot of fun and met a fair share frat guys who I've gotten along with really well. In my experience every school has one, maybe two frats that are legitimate and the rest are filled with the type of dumbfucks I described in the quoted post.

frats are so stupid for many reasons:
1: in every frat ive gone, the majority of the people suck
2: i dont need to pay 1000 bucks a year to get to party
3: im not going to pay someone to "initiate" me, have a shitty time, then be their friend. the only time i would go through something like that is in the military when it actually means something
4: frat guys like butt sex. its guaranteed.

i still haven't watched that since i've actually been aroung greek life.  i remember that movie being awesome.

but to be completely honest, i think frats are lame.  for the obvious reasons, too.  it deemphasises individuality, it draws up a social schedule for the weekend (i always figured a class schedule was enough commitment), and i can count about 5 frat dudes that i'm friends with who don't think their house is the dopest shit ever created.  at first, living in a house with a bunch of friends sounded rad (and still does), but when you add in all the bullshit and lack of anything worthwhile, it's kinda lost it's charm.  oh yeah.  the whole "GDI" thing's the dumbest shit i've ever heard, too.  if you use that term regularly (and with meaning), you're probably the type of frat kid i'm talking about.

i do have to say sororities are lamer, though.  most ridiculously superficial institution i've ever seen.  i'd say more anorexia and coke problems come out of sororities than anything positive.  i can't count how many girls i've known that were nice, legitimate people that have become stuck up (but incredibly insecure) since they got accepted into "kappa".

i'm in my third year of college now, and this is about the time that most of the people in the greek system get over themselves a little and start hanging out with all the people they've been missing out on the past couple years.  i probably sound like a bitter "GDI", and i probably am.  not because i didn't get into a frat (i did, the dropped just before the day you had to register), but because so many of my friends have gone by the wayside because they get into their house, and forget the rest of the world.

oh yeah, roofies and the generally gay shit that goes on in frats was another reason i strayed away from it.

It is, and its based on my school, Dartmouth. I'm a sophomore and am rushing now since i wasn't taking classes in the fall. At dartmouth you can't rush your freshman year, which i think really lets you get a good view of all the different places and you don't make decisions too quickly. I'll share my experiences with frats. 

First off, I guess frats are a bit different here. They are the basis of a ton of social life here, but from what i hear of frats at other colleges, they are completely different here. Going into school, i really didn't want to rush anywhere. I had heard all the frat guy stereotypes, and thye sounded lame. I still think the stereotype is lame, so chances are i wouldn't rush if i went somewhere else. I've met some really cool, REALLY smart people who are all brothers. Personally, I'm probably going to be a double major with environmental studies and spanish, and I'm also a member of the varsity track team. My activities are like nothing compared to some frat guys i know. Also, the frats here are open to everybody as long as you aren't a high school student. If you have a dartmouth ID, you get let in, no questions asked. I think its ridiculous that some schools dont let guys in. I would hate that. Also, my house isn't national, its a local frat (we are the only branch), so we don't have any bullshit dues that go to national and we kind of do our own thing. Its fun.

The pledge term here completely depends on the house. It ranges from barely anything to hanging out 4 nights a week to 3 am, meetings, and having to wear the same thing everyday. My rush term is pretty low key since I'm not drinking because im in season right now with track and my classes are a buttload of work. I still hang out, and a bunch of the guys would be my friends if i were or were not a brother. I have friends at basically every other house on campus, and i still am and will remain good freinds with them for the next 2.5 years. I hang out at other frats sometimes and its no big deal. Everybody is welcoming.

So this post isn't very focused, but the point is that frats really aren't the same everywhere. For me, its a chance to have a place to live, where i can always hang out, and it opens a new social window. I've met a ton of new, really smart, really cool guys. My frat does not define me, I'm still the same person i was before. I really think people should stop generalizing so much about it. I'm a very independent person, and so are most of the guys in the house. Everybody has a ton of differnet activities, with the house being one of them. 

If anybody really cares that much, theres even a wikipedia aritcle! My house (AXA) is the first house pictured.

Wow, in perfect frat boy fashion.  This entire thread you have been insulting every person who is not a participant in Greek life, claiming they have "no tradition", have little to no friends, and that they are losers for not joining a frat.  The second the argument turns around, you turn into a whinny little bitch and use the only power you have to your advantage.  It's like I spilled a beer at one of you "awesome" parties and then got kicked out (big fucking deal).  I guess I'm lucky this is the internet cause otherwise I would have you and your buddies, collars popped, hair gelled, with sorority girls in tow, coming after me for insulting you and your brotherhood. 

I think its clear from the responses that everyone agrees you are a cocky punk and your actions have been ridiculous.  Not just in abusing your power, but in your responses to peoples arguments and the entire theme of the thread.  Have fun at you sweet parties, your homo-erotic hazing activities, and paying for your friends.  Oh, and if having some random guy insult you over the internet has affected you that much, your totally awesome frat life must not be as fulfilling as you make it seem.

If you dont go to a SEC , southern ACC, or any southern school then you don't have a clue how fucking legit they are. they roll harder than all of you ever will.

One of my friend's fraternities back at the school i attended last year had over 60 thou in blow seized by the DEA.

Do you seriously think this will have any positive sway to your cause?  People can choose what they want to do in college, you don't need to tell us we're wrong and "fags" for making our own decisions.  That's great that you think an isolated incident of having a bunch of drugs makes all fraternities super cool, but not everyone thinks the same way you do.  Skogenjake has already dug a hole nobody can crawl out of, so it's really a waste of time to try to make some kind of defense here--that is, unless it's informed and unbiased, which hasn't been the case thus far.  I just don't see why you guys can't realize that people can actually have a good time outside the greek system.

hmmm... I was pretty much over the fraternity scene by my sophmore year of college, although recently I was hanging out with one of my friends/team mates and he's in a frat and it was nice, but it wasn't a big party.  I was never really into doing the sorority thing, I'd rather be spending my money skiing/going on trips/pretty much anything else.  It's where your priorities lie.  And speak for yourself that all the "top shelf" ladies go to sororities, 'cause unless you're going to USC that just has an over-abundance of "top shelf" ladies, not always do the beautiful people hang out in the greek system.

1. Your "smokin" sorority girl is an insecure airhead who couldn't entertain anyone with an IQ over 50 for more than ten seconds in a conversation.
2. There are plenty of "top-shelf" girls who want nothing to do with sororities, and because of that, they are vastly hotter than 90% of the sorority bitches to begin with.
3. If, despite my previous points, I decide I would really like to go after a sorority girl, I wouldn't have to use the fact that I'm a frat dude to get her. If she's so stuck-up that it matters, refer to point 1.
4. I'd rather have the smokin brunette bombshell to be honest.

It's worthless arguing on here. It's like trying to say hip hop and reggae is lame, or wearing clothes that fit you is a better option then wearing xxl. It is what it is, newschool skiers don't mix well with fraternities, simple as that, different ideals, more liberalism, and beliefs in general. I for one am pledging this semester and could not be more excited.
