Sprained Back

So I sprained my back skiing saturday and it fucking sucks. I went to ER and the only thing they said they could do for me was give me vicodin and valium and wait until it starts feeling better. Theres a comp in my area this saturday that I was set on doing and I'm thinking about just taking enough drugs so it doesn't hurt and then trying to compete. Has anyone been in a similar situation? The only thing I'm worried about is hurting my back more, but since it's just a sprain I don't think any long term damage can come of it. Any thoughts?

Competing would be stupid. A back injury can get really serious and turn into something that will keep coming back for the rest of your life if you don't let it heal properly.

My advice would be to just wait it out, if you miss the rest of the season, oh well, not much you can do about that.

we are kids, therefore you must make bad decisions and compete. I got a concussion tot he point that I forgot I moved to Utah, had no clue where I was living, and had no clue how I even got to utah. I skied the rest of the day, and Im still fine. Just do it.

Geeze! To anyone who is taking medical advice from NS...DON'T. Talk to some one who is trained in at least sports medicine. They deal with athletes all the time and they are well aware of your desire to compete. That said, you know your body better than anyone, but if you need to get crunky on pain killers to ski, you may not do so well in a comp.

do not do it: i sprained my back in NZ, took 7 advil, went skiing, was dizzy all day, and am still suffering from long-term effects. every day after skiing, i can hardly stand. it hurts so bad.
